Sri Lanka have to be careful because England are just itching themselves back into the game very nicely.

Shot! Joe Root taps into whatever energy reserves he still has to shimmy forward and crack a Dilruwan Perera full toss through cover for four. Lovely, lovely batting.

That's the 50 partnership up to boot.

Joe Root's century came up off 257 balls with his 16th four.

In terms of the pace of his innings - the first 50 was off 65 balls, the second was off 64 balls, and the last took him another 118 deliveries.

It has been high class - he has been in control.

I like the fact that he's probably noticed he is tired so he has gone down the gears in the last hour or so. He has played very sensibly.

Joe Root has been batting for just under seven hours. That, in the heat of Galle, is a phenomenal effort.

Brought up in typical Joe Root fashion!

Another sweep goes whirling across the outfield and hits the rope as Root raises his bat to the dressing room, who give him a standing ovation. What an innings this is.

Dom Bess looked like he was going to get out any ball to the spinners at the start of his innings and all of a sudden they went to the spinners. He must have thought 'thank you very much'.

It was bizarre captaincy. They have got three spinners who are used to the conditions so he can surely rotate them?

Sri Lanka appeal for pretty much everything at the end of the over - an lbw and catch at leg slip for certain.

Root will be on strike at the start of the next over on 149.

This has been a really good effort from England because when Jonny Bairstow was out and Dan Lawrence it felt a bit ominous.

Niroshan Dickwella is having a little chat with Dom Bess between overs. They're both smiling. There's a terrific story on Cricinfo about Dickwella translating some sledges into Urdu so he could sledge the Pakistan players in their own language, which is the definition of going above and beyond.

Joe Root has played so well, hasn't he? It is unbelievable how well he has played in this series.

Everyone else has really struggled and Root has just looked in a totally different league.
