Root 134, Curran 5
Good from Curran who takes what looks like a risky single but makes his ground comfortably.
There's one over to go until the new ball becomes available for Sri Lanka.

If Oshada Fernando gets any closer under the lid on the leg side he'll be able to feel Sam Curran's breath on his face. He's right in the firing line but is leaping around to try to make something happen.
England's scoring has stalled since the loss of Buttler.
Root 132, Curran 4
No-one does a sunrise/sunset photo like Henry. He loves it.
Joe Root gets down to sweep again and is up out of the shot hobbling with what looks like cramp. Root has to survive these 20 minutes until tea.

England trail by over 140 runs - it feels a long way away at the moment.

There is real turn outside the left-hander's off stump. It's not easy for Curran who sees another ball zip beyond him.
There's a fielder very close on the leg side waiting for a catch too.

It is inevitable Joe Root will score more Test runs than me.
The single to Root in the previous over took Root beyond Kevin Pietersen in England's all-time run scorers list. He now only has Cook, Gooch, Stewart and Gower ahead of him.
Root 130, Curran 3
Ramesh Mendis has found some good turn ever since I suggested he was having a difficult debut. He rips one past Curran's edge. A beauty from the off-spinner.

England are just grinding nicely I think.
It will be a really important hour after tea with the new ball because it might grip for the spinners a bit more, but it may also come onto the bat a bit better and Joe Root can find that rhythm again.
Root's scoring has definitely slowed in the past hour.
Sri Lanka appeal passionately for an lbw against him. Root has hit it and it was missing anyway. Not going to be out, that one.
Root responds by drilling a sweep into the boot of short leg.

Joe Root is just going through one of those stages where he is quite tired. He has been in the field for pretty much three days - after following on from pretty much doing the same last week.
Sometimes when you bat for so long you can go through those phases for 15-20 minutes. I don't think he will mind that he's not hitting boundaries at the moment.

Curran, naturally an attacking batsman, looks keen to play himself in. He has company, a short leg, a slip and a gully in addition to the vocal Dickwella behind the stumps.
The pressure is on.

This looks like an "if you're in, you're in" pitch. Of the eight batsmen to reach double figures, 6 have made 50+; the other 2 falling shortly after a break. There seems value in hanging in there.

Buttler played a number of excellent reverse sweeps in his innings. For me, he's just as likely to get out playing a more traditional shot as that one.
Sam Curran is off the mark. He can certainly bat but his three Test fifties all came in his first seven Tests.

James Gulleford: Stop playing stupid reverse sweeps! Could be a massive turning point in the game. This is a Test match not a T20. Put the reverse sweep away! With a new ball due soon that’s unforgivable.

Joe Root exchanged words with Dinesh Chandimal after that Buttler wicket. I'm not sure what had gone on there.
It looked a straight-forward decision for the third umpire.
Dilruwan Perera has a lot more to work with bowling to the left-handed Curran than England's exclusively right-handed top order.

The last three balls that Sam Curran had faced in Sri Lanka had got him out before that.
Root 127, Curran 0
Curran leaves his first ball which spins away from him.
