Test cricket allows you time to bat - to be selfish. Don't even look at the scoreboard. Just tick off time. The runs will come. The batters that have been willing to graft and stay in - Conway, Nicholls' innings was ugly, Burns - have been able to get rewards.
'Daughter might be a good omen'
England batsman Rory Burns, speaking to TMS: "When you walk in that dressing room and see the board, it is nice to get up there.
"My wife and daughter were here on Thursday and today. The daughter might be a good omen.
"It was really tough. I think they bowled really well. I thought I had really good tempo on Thursday. The game situation dictated I got a little more fluent at the back end and the partnership with Jimmy was quite nice.
"Being left out of the last couple in India is not a nice thing. To come back and obviously at the next opportunity to take that is really pleasing. I am really satisfied with the hundred.
"We bowled really well tonight and could have had a couple more wickets as well. The third innings is difficult to pace. It is on them to make the move. They are just edging it at the minute."
'As good a bowling debut I have seen'

Robinson looks high class. It is early and he has had a tough week. There are whispers he may miss the next Test but we will see him in Test cricket again.
In terms of cricket and the way he bowls he makes it look very easy. He got more out of the surface than Jimmy Anderson.
As a bowling all-rounder I would put that right up there with as good a debut I have seen. You have had to have skill and discipline and oomph in his action.
He has made it look very simple under the pressure he has been under. He has certainly got some character.

The batting is a concern. The pitch was doing just enough.
Lawrence played that drive early. Pope's technique was questioned. That concerns me about Pope. I think his bat swing is more geared to hitting on the off side and batting on off stump restricts that.
If England want to win big series they have to bat as a collective. I just don't see it from England. They have to get that right.

Tim Southee finds himself on the Lord's honours board for a second time, finishing with figures of 6-43.
In fact, it was a strong all-round performance from New Zealand's bowlers.

I have loved today. It has had pretty much everything. We have seen outstanding batting from Rory Burns. He was willing to do the hard yards and was rewarded for that.
We have seen outstanding bowling - Southee was high class and we have seen some rubbish as well. You can always rely on England. They very rarely give you boring days.

Over-rates are poor. They have tried fining the captains and it hasn't worked.
If the umpires are very clear on the field and let players know they are behind, they should, when you are four overs behind, remove a fielder from the field. They can have the player back when they catch up again.
Bowlers would not like it.
