Summary

  • Day three of the only women's Test between England and India

  1. Ind 203-8published at 11:53 British Summer Time 18 June 2021

    Cam, I'm glad you've asked.

The follow-on in all four-day (and three-day) cricket is 150. It's the same in the County Championship.

If a men's Test loses its first day. then the follow-on in that becomes 150 too.

Don't ask me what the rule is for the WTC final, where there is the possibility of a sixth day.

Still Knight, with Deepti sweeping hard in front of square for four. Time for some pace? Or is it too dark for that?

In case you've lost track, the collapse now stands at 8-30. There's probably a joke about the England men in there somewhere. Ecclestone, who has taken all three wickets to fall this morning, continues to weave her web. She's got umpire Sue Redfern for company. Redfern is wearing the most wonderful sunhat. Very wide brim. It could double as wedding attire.

Heather Knight's first 50 balls went for just one run. Her last four balls have gone for two. Just getting a bit too expensive.

    Need 48 to avoid follow-on

If India fans are leaving Southampton, it's only about 75 miles to Bristol. Have two Tests ever been played so close together at the same time? Pooja Vastrakar has joined Deepti Sharma, who sweeps Heather Knight for a couple.

Standing in the pouring rain guarding some grass would rank pretty high on a list of jobs I wouldn’t want to do.

I’ve already overheard fans making the decision to give up and go home.

Daniel is right. Ecclestone has been magnificent. I undersold that take from Jones. At first, the juggle doesn't look great, but that got big on her very quickly. To react and grab the rebound was top keeping.

Sophie Ecclestone has looked like a different bowler this morning compared to yesterday. Late last night she found a sweet spot of length and hasn't lost it since.

    One more!

Amy Jones juggles the catch and Sneh Rana becomes Sophie Ecclestone's fourth victim. It's a classic left-arm spinner's dismissal. Turn, outside edge, pouched.

The follow-on looms a little larger.

Heather Knight's figures are still 2-1 and she's bowled seven maidens. From eight overs.

Former England coach Mark Robinson used to call Heather Knight a 'warrior'. For what's it's worth, she's the only player out there in short sleeves. I think that drizzle has cleared.

Sophie Ecclestone is a surprisingly angry bowler. When we think of fiery bowlers in this England team we think, rightly, about Katherine Brunt, who was marvellously furious yesterday. But Ecclestone is equally capable of a good shout when she wants.

Need 50 to avoid the follow-on

The mesmeric Ecclestone continues the dual-spin attack. Long hair tied back, tall action, lovely dip and curve on the ball. India nudge and nurdle their way closer to the follow-on mark.

I say Knight is bowling offies, but even the England skipper refers to her own bowling as 'straight-breaks'. A rapid maiden. Will the rain stay away?

England World Cup-winning spinner on Test Match Special

Sophie Ecclestone was just bowling a bit too short there. It looked as if she was just trying too hard to land the ball in that rough which made her lose her length.
