Before I leave you there is some good news for England fans from Canberra!

Ellyse Perry is out! Having scored 216 not out, 116 and 76 not out in her last three Ashes innings the Australia superstar all-rounder has been caught off the top edge to a Nat Sciver bouncer.

    Unsurprisingly England are delighted.

That wicket leaves Australia 43-3. Listen to the game here.

West Indies captain Kieron Pollard: "It was a very good game of cricket. We batted well. Kudos to Rovman. He came in and took his chance. He's been in a bit of form in the T20 league. He didn't play in the first two games but then grasped his opportunity."

  4. 'We are confident in our side'published at 00:17 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2022

England's stand-in captain Moeen Ali: "We were done a little bit with Eoin Morgan going down and playing three debutants but they played really well. A fantastic partnership took the game away from us but I'm proud of the way the boys batted at the end.

"We've got guys putting their hands up. Tom Banton was outstanding today which is great for his confidence going forward.

"We are confident in our side and we said from the start it would be a brilliant series."

  5. 'Everything came out of the middle'published at 00:15 Greenwich Mean Time 27 January 2022

Player of the match Rovman Powell speaking on BT Sport: "Last night I chatted to the captain and he told me I was playing today.

"I know I can strike the ball well. I had a problem against wrist spin and the last seven months I went away and have been working on that and opening up the off side, which worked today.

"Adil Rashid is the most threatening of all the bowlers. We said if we can get 24 or 30 off him then that's good, limit his wicket taking. And then we can target the other bowlers.

"Everything came out of the middle today."

There's an hour gone in the Women's Ashes Test in Canberra.

England made a fine start with two wickets in the first four overs but Australia have responded pretty well since then.

They have battled well to reach 42-2 at drinks.

The figure of Ellyse Perry, who is averaging a ridiculous 488 in her four Tests since the start of the last Ashes in Australia, is looming large.

She is 18 not out alongside Rachael Haynes, who is unbeaten on 21.

An inconsistent bowling display from England and subsequently a failure to tame Powell and Pooran proved the difference.

Tom Banton's 73 off 39 and debutant Phil Salt's 24-ball 57 are two positives the tourists can take from their showing.

Powell is the man of the day but a notable mention to Nicholas Pooran who played beautifully for his 43-ball 70.

And Romario Shepherd went for some runs but took 3-59, while Kieron Pollard put in a smart bowling display to finish with 2-39.

But, there is one clear match-winner today. It has been a day to remember for Rovman Powell.

Nope, surely not going to happen.

Romario Shepherd has his third wicket of the match as Phil Salt is bowled round his legs.

A superb knock from Salt, though, with an entertaining 54 from 24 balls.

    Garton b Cottrell 2 (Eng 186-7)

Bowled 'im. George Garton is the next England man to fall. It's full and straight from Sheldon Cottrell and into off stump.

Cottrell gives a half-hearted salute to see Garton off.

  16. Eng 186-6published at 18.2 overs

Garton picks up a single. Salt throws everything at it but can only take one down to mid-off. He lets out an almighty groan in frustration as he takes the run.

    Target 225

Garton is off the mark in international cricket with a single. But it means Phil Salt will be off strike.

    In comes George Garton.

He might be running out of partners but it's back-to-back boundaries for Phil Salt.

    Need 51 from 18 balls

Another Phil Salt six. He's not giving this up without a fight.

Salt has managed to score at a brilliant rate but it's been tough going for fellow debutant Harry Brook who is on 10 from 12 balls.
