Alex: Can't help but fear that England could lose this by an innings. Quite possibly before the close of play today.

This spell from Mitchell Starc is reminiscent of when Mitchell Johnson dismantled England in an evening at Adelaide back in Ashes 2013-14 bowling with real fire.

There was no edge on that. Joe Root looked up at the umpire a little anxiously. The slips were all going up. If anyone was going to survive, it was Joe Root.
The crowd roars as Mitchell Starc bounds in at the MCG.
It's an absolute peach from the left-arm paceman who forces Joe Root to tentatively hang the bat out and the ball whistles past the outside edge.

Beautiful bowling from Starc. Finding the line and angle into the left-handed Dawid Malan.

Once again, an England innings is in disarray.
Malan lbw b Starc 0
Disaster for England as Dawid Malan goes for a first-ball duck. The ball angled back into the England number three from Mitchell Starc who is done for pace.
Height might have been an issue, but it goes down as umpire's call with the ball tracking showing it hitting the bails.
Joe Root comes to the crease with Starc on a hat-trick.
This feels like a big delivery in the context of this Test match and, indeed, the Ashes series itself.
Possibly bad to worse for England as Dawid Malan is given out lbw to Mitchell Starc first ball. He reviews but this looks close.
Crawley c Carey b Starc 5 (Eng 7-1)
England's openers were face a battle for survival and Zak Crawley's luck has ran out after that earlier edge.
This time its the thinnest of snicks to one angled across him by Mitchell Starc and Alex Carey claims the catch.
Australia celebrate.

GRB: It’s day two. Please just bat time. Don’t let the Aussies bat tomorrow. Tire their bowlers, keep their batters in the field. Runs will come.

This is going to be an intense 45 minutes.
Trail by 76 runs
England opener Zak Crawley struck on the inner thigh.
A pumped-up Pat Cummins, veins bulging, turns and appeals for lbw but Paul Reiffel is calmly turns him down.
Two balls later and Cummins finds the edge of Crawley's bat but the ball goes between first slip and wicketkeeper Alex Carey.
Warner got a paw on it on the half-volley but really it was Carey's catch to take. The net result is England get four runs.
Spellbinding Test cricket this.

Pat Cummins looks fired up, with the bit between his teeth.

Roberto: Best bowler in the world - Cummins or Bumrah? First two balls of this first over by Cummins awesome!
Trail by 80 runs
Haseeb Hameed gets himself in line to one that straightens a little from left-arm paceman Mitchell Starc and defends confidently.
Both England's openers need to leave and defend well here.
Survival is the key at the moment.

He had no idea where that had gone. I have no idea what that hit, it just took off and Hameed was all over the place. A brute of a ball.
Vicious from Pat Cummins, who bangs in a short ball which raps the handle of Haseeb Hameed's bat and his arm guard as he tried to take evasive action.
The ball flies over the slip cordon as the crowd gasp. Hameed is okay, and manages to make it down to the other end of the pitch for a leg bye. His head must have been spinning.
Two balls later and Cummins is unplayable with a delivery which nips away off the seam to beat Zak Crawley's bat.
England will do well survive intact if Cummins continues like this.
Trail by 81 runs
Mitchell Starc is roared on by the crowd at the MCG as he runs into bowl to Haseeb Hameed, who gets off the mark and a pair with a nudge off his hip from the fifth ball.

England will want a minimum of being 200 runs ahead after their second innings. I don't think asking them to score 280 is out of the question.
It took England a while, but they eventually removed Australia's tailenders after a frustrating period.
Now, can England bat out the rest of the day?
