Into the final hour we go!

England are right in this. They have a real chance of pulling off an incredible victory.

With 17 overs left England need another 104 runs as they chase 257 for victory.

Heather Knight is doing it again, she has 46 not out, while Nat Sciver is alongside her on 32 not out from 33 balls.

Australia, who declared earlier in the day on 216-7, have started to spread the field into defensive positions.

If England win they will take a 6-4 lead in this Ashes series.

  4. England start well in tough victory chasepublished at 04:51 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2022

England are giving this chase a go.

Tammy Beaumont made 36 from 42 balls before she was brilliantly caught by Rachael Haynes off the pace of Tahlia McGrath.

But since then Heather Knight, England's centurion from the first innings, has come out and looked to be aggressive.

England are 80-1 at drinks. They need another 177 from a minimum of 29 overs.

The required run-rate is around six runs per over.

England have reached 23-0 at tea on the final day chasing 257 after a positive declaration from Australia captain Meg Lanning.

Lanning called her side in at 216-7 half an hour before tea, with 48 overs left in the day.

Beth Mooney top-scored with 63 while there were also contributions of 41 from Ellyse Perry, 38 from Ashleigh Gardner and 34 from Tahlia McGrath.

Katherine Brunt ended up with 3-24, giving her match figures of 8-84.

Katherine Brunt is doing her very best to give England hope in this match.

Shortly after lunch she had Australia captain Meg Lanning caught at slip for 12.

At that stage the hosts were 170 runs ahead at 130-5 but that lead continues to nudge towards 200.

England wicketkeeper Amy Jones, who dropped two catches earlier, missed a stumping chance to dismiss Tahlia McGrath.

Australia lost Beth Mooney on the stroke of lunch but they are still on top on this final day.

Off-spinner Charlie Dean removed Mooney lbw for 63, claiming her first Test wicket in the process, but Australia are 123-4, leading by 163.

The only other wicket England claimed in that session came when Ellyse Perry fell lbw to Sophie Ecclestone for 41.

The tourists' chances were hurt by the fact wicketkeeper Amy Jones dropped Mooney on 40 and Perry on 31, preventing them gaining some momentum earlier in the day.

Australia would probably have to collapse in a heap from here for England to be able to chase a score in the time that remains.

The hosts could still declare and have a go at bowling out England for a series-clinching win.

    There's the breakthrough England needed!

Ellyse Perry is out for 41 after being trapped lbw by Sophie Ecclestone.

When the wicket fell Australia were 103-3 with a lead of 143.

More wickets are needed from an England perspective after they dropped those two chances earlier.

  9. Jones drops costly as England's hopes fadepublished at 00:30 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January 2022

    England's hopes are fading...

Wicketkeeper Amy Jones has dropped both Beth Mooney and Ellyse Perry as the tourists' remain frustrated in their search for wickets.

The chance to dismiss Mooney, on 40 at the time, was straightforward. The Perry catch was tougher, Jones diving to her right in front of first slip.

Kate Cross was the bowler on both occasions.

Australia's lead is now nearing 150. If things continue like this attention will turn to England trying to save the game rather than win it.

Remember if Australia are victorious in this Test they will retain the Ashes.

England have not managed a breakthrough in the first hour's play on day four.

Australia have extended their lead to 100, having reached 60-2.

For England to have any hope of winning this Test they are going to need some quick wickets.

Australia have scored at a decent rate and could give themselves a chance of bowling England out later if things continue.

    Good evening.

We have an intriguing final day ahead in Canberra.

After the rain on day three a draw seems the most likely result but both England and Australia have talked up their chances of victory.

Australia will resume 12-2, leading by just 52.

If England can bowl Australia out quickly they could earn themselves a chase-able target.

Australia, meanwhile, will hope to score runs, declare and have a go at bowling England out later in the day.

A win either way would be have a big say in the outcome of this series. Australia will retain the Ashes if they manage it.
