Deepti 29, Vastrakar 12
Ecclestone continues, so no Anya Shrubsole just yet. Shrubsole does have to chase a Deepti drive. With her high knees, she runs a bit like a show pony, hence her nickname 'Hoof'. Deepti rocks back and punches four more, again past Shrubsole. England are losing control here. A real chance for India to save the follow-on.

The battle between Katherine Brunt and Shafali Verma was great to watch yesterday. Brunt was absolutely raging and Verma was just laughing in her face.
Need 23 to avoid the follow-on
There are spots of rain on the TV camera, but nothing that would force the players off. Amy Jones is up to the stumps for Brunt, who is touching 70mph. On the boundary edge, Mady Villiers is preparing some handwarmers for the England fielders.

Francis Edwards: We all knew that heavy rain was forecast a week before. There will be barely any play if any in this game, I knew that 4 days ago. Why can’t they just reschedule and play it next week or move venues. Or better yet, host it in a country with less random weather!
Katherine Brunt for the first time today. She gets one over as a loosener before the new ball is due. I suspect Anya Shrubsole will get the same.

I think India have made a decision to try and avoid the follow-on pretty quickly now. Ecclestone's struggled a bit more to the left-handed Deepti Sharma, who is playing a few more shots.
Need 23 to avoid the follow-on
Still Ecclestone, but my eye is drawn to a little chat between Katherine Brunt and Anya Shrubsole. They are thinking about the second new ball. A sweep from Deepti brings four more. That follow-on mark draws nearer. There's more rain in the air.

This is the danger here if she hasn't bowled much this season. India could get some quick runs that take India closer to that follow-on target.

Dunkley's leg-breaks can be a touch hit and miss. She gives it a rip, but can also be expensive. One pie of a long hop is pulled to the fence by Vestrakar, who follows up with a backfoot drive for four more. Might I suggest this experiment should be a short one?

Sophia Dunkley hasn't bowled this season much at all but I like this from England. She bowls leg-spin so will offer something different than Ecclestone.
Now then. Here's Sophia Dunkley's leg-breaks...

My sincere apologies to the players and fans in Southampton. I take the blame for the weather entirely. It's my daughter Sofia's 8th birthday tomorrow and we ordered a bouncy castle to be delivered today. My presumption must have angered the Gods. I don't know what I was thinking.

Before this match I was thinking that Goswami and Raj for India must be up there with the longest Test careers ever. And I came across Vera Burt MBE from New Zealand who played three Test matches in 1948, 1949 and ... 1969. 20 years and 355 days, the longest Test career of any woman ever.
Ind 207-8
That's nice from Vastrakar, probably the shot of the day so far. Up on her toes, punching Ecclestone through the covers for four. Time for a drink...

We have cricket in Southampton!
There are some hardy souls in the stands. There are plenty of blankets, coats and warmers that have been call upon. Still Knight, walking with purpose back to her mark, inspecting the ball, then firing her off-breaks down a tube. Yet another maiden. New ball is due in five overs.

Need 44 to avoid the follow-on
If you've missed what Sophie Ecclestone has been up to this morning, have a look at two of the three wickets she's taken. I once bumped into her at a farmer's market in Knutsford. She's very, very tall.

Hypocaust: Sophie Ecclestone is the first England women's spinner to take four wickets in a Test innings since Laura Harper took 5-66 v India in Delhi in 2005. The last English spinner to do so at home, was Clare Connor, with 4-68 against Australia at Hove in 2005.
