Andrew Coombes: I drove past the stadium in Southampton yesterday while delivering groceries and learnt the hard way why posties always wear shorts - legs dry a lot faster than trousers do..

These are the sort of life lessons we need on a Saturday afternoon. India want a single, with Raut taking on Kate Cross' throw from mid-on. It misses and I think Raut would have been home anyway. Meanwhile, after what feels like a month on 48, Deepti sweeps a single to go to 49.

I once picked up a homing pigeon on a road - you can find the owner online by looking up the numbers in the ring. They settle in unusual places when they become exhausted so if you find one give it some water and food.

I thought that was just my postie. Does everyone's wear shorts?

Our scorer is in shorts today, despite it being a little cooler. You can always rely on Phil Long, a cricket club's groundsman and your postman to wear shorts.

Remember, this Test is worth four points for a win and two for a draw. The three ODIs and three T20s are worth two points each.

Obviously we're all yearning for an entertaining finish but there's a lot at stake in this match given it's a multi-format series. In many ways, a drawn, entertaining Test match sets up the series nicely because if you lose a Test in this format it's such a disadvantage for the rest of the series. You ended up needing to win three of the five white-ball games.

Sophie Ecclestone is back into the attack. I can't help but feel her sunglasses are a little optimistic. My other half wears prescription sunglasses, often when it's going dark. Her left-arm spin isn't very good, mind.

India have been so much more solid in this second innings. There was a collapse of enormous proportions in the first innings and they looked paralysed by fear. They sent in a nightwatchman and as soon as she was out, it was like what next? They know what they need to do today now though.

I fed you some duff information earlier. Lunch in Bristol will actually be at 13:15, rather than 13:00. Apologies if you're hanging on for your cucumber sandwich.

Punam Raut is showing an immaculate, perfect defence.

Kate Cross, podcaster extraordinaire, is charging into Raut under the Bristol clouds. Raut, short in stature, hangs on the back foot and plays with all the time in the world. The England fielders clap and shout to encourage Cross, but there's not a great deal happening out there.

Biffage! Punam Raut goes downtown to hit Kate Cross to the long-on fence. India are only 17 behind and will be ahead by the break at this rate.

Remember, action in Bristol in half an hour behind, so their lunch will be at 13:00.

New Zealand will be disappointed they didn't make the most of the new ball but it's even stevens after the first session.

With the conditions, it could have been worse for India.

With the start they made, it could have been better.

Last over before lunch in Southampton. The entire morning has been played in a haze, as if rain could fall any second.

Abinash Das: India usually brings their best game when the odds are against them and especially after a loss of toss. The comfort zone hasn't been kind to India as they have almost always bounced back when pushed against the wall.
