Wicket time again at the Ageas Bowl.

    Clive Eakin
    BBC CWR at Edgbaston

On a breezy, overcast first morning of the season Warwickshire are already learning how difficult defending the County Championship title will be.

Their bowlers are being put under pressure by Ryan Patel who hasn't looked back since pulling the 10th ball of the match for four.

He's since cleared the ropes for two sixes and reached his 50 off just 52 balls.

Olly Hannon-Dalby bowled a testing opening spell but Warwickshire's attack have struggled for control under Patel's onslaught.

At the other end Rory Burns has been content to bat solidly and allow his partner to dominate the strike.

  6. rain stops play

    Glouces 7-1 v Northants

Another weather interruption at Wantage Road.

It's been slow progress in the seven overs they have managed since play started late at 11:50.

BBC Radio Northampton's Andrew Radd is hopeful of not being off too long.

  7. wicket

WICKETpublished at 12:18 British Summer Time 7 April 2022

    Lammonby c Brown b Holland 11 (Hampshire v Somerset 35-3)

Another one down for Somerset at the Ageas Bowl.

Ian Holland produces a delivery that finds the outside edge of Tom Lammonby's bat and gives Ben Brown his first catch as a Hampshire player behind the stumps.

A first bonus point of the season in the bag for Hampshire as well in the process.

A 50 opening partnership for Essex to begin their campaign as Nick Browne (31 not out) and Alastair Cook (16 not out) steer them past that landmark.

Ball still moving around a bit in the blustery conditions too.

A Somerset side shorn of no fewer than eight first-choice players by illness, injury and non-availability is finding it hard work against a potent Hampshire seam attack at a chilly and very windy Ageas Bowl.

Ben Green and skipper Tom Abell were out in almost identical fashion - well caught in the slips from deliveries that just did enough off the pitch to find the outside edge: Good bowling rather than bad batting.

Two new faces combining well for the visitors.

The 50 is up in all the of the three games being played.

Leicestershire v Worcestershire. Start delayed due to rain.

Middlesex 52-1 v Derbyshire: Mark Stoneman the early man to go for the hosts. Michael Atherton's lad Josh De Caires is on 21, with Stevie Eskinazi on 24.

Sussex 54-0 v Nottinghamshire: Sussex openers Ali Orr and Tom Haines so far unparted. Skipper Haines is going very well. Seven boundaries.

Ryan Patel reaches the County Championship's first 50 of the season with his second six in successive overs - this time off home skipper Will Rhodes.

If Patel maintains this rate of scoring for the rest of the morning, he's on course for a century before lunch.

  17. Here comes Stevo!published at 11:49 British Summer Time 7 April 2022

    Essex 37-0 v Kent

Eleven breezy overs safely negotiated so far at Chelmsford by Essex openers Nick Browne and Alastair Cook without much alarm.

But here comes county cult hero Darren Stevens for his first bowl of the season, so often the scurge of Essex with both ball and bat.

He starts with a bit of a long hop which Browne (31 not out) cuts away for four before another that he drives to the fence through the covers.

A cold, blustery morning here sees Mason Crane and Brad Wheal miss out on selection for Hampshire but their bowlers have started well.

Mohammad Abbas beat the bat a few times with movement off the surface, but not much swing in the air at present.

James Fuller finds himself in the side as well after an impressive pre-season.

Somerset unfortunately find themselves not at full strength with many key players out with illness, injury or unavailable.

A couple of early wickets for Abbas, from a fantastic low catch from Liam Dawson at second slip to dismiss Ben Green and then for Kyle Abbott early in his spell as Tom Abell was caught in the cordon at third slip by Joe Weatherley.

First bowling change at Edgbaston after nine overs as fit-again Henry Brookes comes into the Bears attack in place of Craig Miles.

Brookes missed almost the whole of last season with a quad ligament injury he suffered in a Second XI game in July.

Ryan Patel going well. Rory Burns taking things a little more steadily.
