    Jonathan Agnew

BBC cricket correspondent on Test Match Special

It's a brilliant catch from Kane Williamson. Outstanding, that was pure athleticism.

No, it fell to the ground. Buttler is reprieved. Good decision from the umpires to have a look because Williamson thought he'd caught that.

  2. Not out

    Eng 45-1

    Wow!

I was certain this was a brilliant catch by Kane Williamson in the covers, but it actually spills out as he tries to catch it over his shoulder, and hits the turf.

    That's a shock.

  3. Umpire review

    Brilliant catch by Kane Williamson!

    Or is it?

The umpires want to check it.

    The Gabba

There a people on the balconies of the high-rise block which overlooks this ground. A lovely spot.

  5. Eng 40-0

Tim Southee gets out the over well. Just a single conceded from the final two balls.

Still though, 15 from the over. That's a brilliant one for England.

    Ravi Bopara

Former England all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

I love this from Alex Hales. He knows where Southee is going to bowl and is walking into the ball to create that extra bit of pace. Smart batting.

  7. Eng 39-0

Ok, Alex Hales is no longer batting with a toothpick.

He clubs through the covers twice in successive balls to move to 30.

He's treating Tim Southee with a fair bit of disdain here.

    Ravi Bopara

Former England all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

Baseball-style and this is such an important over for both sides. England now have the chance to make this a big over.

  9. Eng 31-0

    Alex Hales has arrived.

Length from Tim Southee and the England opener just flat bats it back down the ground for six.

    Dismissive.

    BBC Sport at the Gabba

This famous stadium is due to be revamped before hosting the 2032 Olympics.

Behind one stand is a school which could be demolished as part of an expansion.

These protest signs line the railings. One reads "Please don't knock down our school." Another says "little people count too".

    Protest signs
  11. Eng 25-0

Interesting. Spin in the powerplay as left-arm tweaker Mitchell Santner comes into the attack.

It's a tidy start too, with just three runs and a leg bye off the over.

It's been a relatively sedate start.

  12. Post update

    Ravi Bopara

Former England all-rounder on BBC Test Match Special

Good finish to the over, England were in need of a boundary. It wasn't a bad ball from Boult - it was a knuckle ball - but because the field was up, Hales was able to get it over the top.

  13. Eng 21-0

Trent Boult concedes just one single from his first five balls, but as is so often the case in white-ball cricket, he can't get out of the over.

A bit of a floaty length and Alex Hales plants him back down the ground for a two-bounce four.

    Hales

That's a good shot from Hales, he hit it on the top of the bounce. I like the aggression.

  15. Post update

    Quentin Hull

Commentator on BBC Test Match Special

Hales didn't get all of that at all, it was a third gear shot but it races away.

  16. Eng 16-0

Don't bowl length to Alex Hales.

Tim Southee drops a little short and the England opener climbs into it and pulls away to the boundary.

He picks up another brace with a nice steer into the covers, before he tries to guide fine but misses.

You can definitely tell he's battling with himself at the moment.

  17. Post update

    Matthew Henry

    BBC Sport at the Gabba

There are lots of England fans here - one group at deep mid-wicket to the end Tim Southee will now bowl particularly vocal.

This just has all of the feelings of a massive game.

    Ravi Bopara

    Boult

Alex Hales is lucky to get away with that, that has swung back beautifully.

  19. Post update

    Quentin Hull

Commentator on BBC Test Match Special

That is the stereotypical Boult boomerang.

  20. Eng 9-0

More swing for Trent Boult and Alex Hales looks like he's batting with a toothpick at the moment.

He's very late on a shot and a thick inside edge just evades leg stump and runs away to the boundary. A huge slice of luck for the out-of-form Hales.

That's better, though. A nice push brings him a couple through the covers.
