  1. Capsey stars as defending champions Invincibles see off Phoenix

    Callum Matthews

    BBC Sport cricket writer

Defending champions Oval Invincibles impressively saw off the previously-unbeaten Birmingham Phoenix to climb above them into second in the women's Hundred.

Chasing 107 to win, Invincibles won with 18 balls to spare, thanks to Lauren Winfield-Hill's unbeaten 41 off 37 balls, while returning captain Dane van Niekerk made a run-a-ball 21.

Phoenix were restricted to 106-7 with opener Eve Jones top-scoring with 29 off 29 balls.

Alice Capsey was the pick of the Invincibles bowlers, claiming 3-15 from her 20 balls.

    Here's what else happened:

    • 18-year-old Sophia Smale was again impressive for Invincibles, removing Sophie Devine in taking 1-18.
    • The Monmouthshire-born left-arm spinner has previously removed Alyssa Healy, Danni Wyatt, Tahlia McGrath, Bryony Smith in the tournament and on BBC radio commentary, Alex Hartley said Smale could be "the breakthrough star of this year".
    • South Africa's Shabnim Ismail restricted Phoenix well, only conceding 12 from her 20 balls, while Emily Arlott recorded figures of 1-18 from 17 balls for Phoenix.

    What's next?

The same two teams meet in the men's competition at 18:30 BST, with live text and radio commentary on the BBC Sport website and app.

Oval Invincibles are next in action on Saturday (15:30), when they travel to Lord's to face London Spirit in a derby.

Birmingham Phoenix host Manchester Originals at the time the following day.

Wednesday sees London Spirit host Welsh Fire with both the women's game (15:00) and men's game (18:30) available to watch live on BBC Two, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app.

    Alice Capsey

Oval Invincibles captain Dane van Niekerk, speaking to Sky Sports:

"Alice Capsey is such a talented cricketer. Just the freedom, the fearlessness.

"I wish her well in international cricket. She'll go down as one of the best England will ever have."

  3. Post update

Oval Invincibles captain Dane van Niekerk, speaking to Sky Sports:

"Birmingham Phoenix have been going really well. There were a lot of nerves coming into this game.

"But our start, how clinical we were, as a captain I couldn't have asked for more.

"With our bowling, our fielding, everything just clicked into place.

"I just think all round it was very close to a perfect performance in my opinion.

"Credit to the bowlers, they made my job a lot easier."

  4. Post update

Oval Invincibles' Alice Capsey, who was given the Match Hero award:

"It was a big game for us, playing Phoenix who were three from three, so it was great to get a convincing victory.

"We tried to keep it simple with the ball; almost if they miss we hit and the fielders were amazing, they backed us up. I tried to bat with sensible risk."

  5. Post update

Alice Capsey is our match hero.

No surprises there. She took 3-20 before smashing 20 off 18 balls with the bat.

  6. Post update

    Alex Hartley

Former England bowler on BBC Radio

There is definitely some work to be done by Birmingham Phoenix. They need to show some more impetus with the bat early on. But there is no need for open-heart surgery.

  20. Post update

    Carlos Brathwaite

West Indies all-rounder on BBC radio

I've liked the intent from Lauren Winfield-Hill. She hasn't quite got the connection she's wanted but the intent she's shown has allowed her to hit those two boundaries.
