  2. 'Unfair' to say Sciver-Brunt took it too far in fieldpublished at 16:58 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2023

England captain Heather Knight has defended bowler Katherine Sciver-Brunt, who conceded 18 runs from the final over after earlier shouting at her team-mates during a ragged fielding performance.

"I thought Katherine bowled brilliantly at the start, to concede just five or six runs from her first two overs was unbelievable and it’s a job she’s done for us really well for such a long time," Knight said.

"I think it’s probably unfair to look at that one over in isolation, looking at the whole innings there were things we could have done better and chances that could have gone the other way.

"I think it’s probably a bit unfair to say [that Katherine took it too far]. She’s very passionate and maybe tries a bit too hard. She wants to win and wants to compete and that’s really important every time you put on an England shirt but I don’t think it’s fair to have that one thing on Katherine isolated today.

"I don’t know if it’s Katherine’s last game for England. You’ll have to speak to her about that. She’s still bowling very well so we’ll see what happens."

England have broken records we probably didn't think would be broken. They are entertaining and have unbelievable talent. The youth that are coming through stands out for me. They are going to be such a talented group of cricketers in a few years. Because they already are now and they're just going to get better.

  4. 'Absolutely gutted'published at 16:49 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2023

England opener Danni Wyatt, speaking to Sky Sports: "Absolutely gutted. I was feeling very positive after the start we got. Looking back now I just wish I was still out there. South Africa, credit to them, they had a simple plan to bowl slow and straight and set good fields. Unfortunately it wasn't our day today.

"We let them get too many at the end. We weren't at our best in the field. They were red hot. T20 cricket is a funny game"

If South Africa play like this on Sunday, why can't they win the final? These players believe, beating a side like England in a game that was close. They're going to do it all again on Sunday and I can't wait.

  7. 'South Africa need to play exactly like today on Sunday'published at 16:38 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2023

    Alex Hartley
Former England bowler on BBC Test Match Special

There's no pressure on South Africa on Sunday. They've already inspired the next generation. No matter what happens, they've already won. They just need to go out there and play exactly like they did today.

  8. 'See you guys on Sunday'published at 16:36 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2023

South Africa captain Sune Luus: "First of all; England, well played. It was a great match. We were out of it in it, out of it, in it again. We have best bowling attack in world and it was against the best batting line-up in the world."

On Ayabonga Khaka's 18th over, in which she took three wickets: "She is a phenomenal bowler - one of best in world. She showed her class again today."

On her side's win: "It is massive. Every game we play we keep making history. I hope this is a turning point not just women's cricket in South Africa but women's sport in general.

"The Newlands faithful turned out today. Thank you for all of our support. See you guys on Sunday."

  9. 'This doesn't define us'published at 16:34 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2023

More from England captain Heather Knight: "We're starting to build something. But it's T20 games and the fine margins happen. But this doesn't define us. The future for us going forward is to be really aggressive and attacking.

"It's been brilliant I took a moment to take it all in and listen to the noise when I was out there in the middle. You felt the pressure from the crowd. It's nice to see Newlands buzzing.

"The professionalism since I started, the amount of investment, It shows the benefit when you do invest and you market it properly. Everyone here got good value for their tickets.

"Gutted I won't be in the final but I will be watching. Hopefully it will be a good spectacle."

  10. 'Gutted'published at 16:31 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2023

England captain Heather Knight: "I'm obviously gutted but first of all what a brilliant game of cricket. We did well to take it close

"South Africa had a very good plan with their bowling, they bowled straight lines and made it tough for us, and we probably conceded too many runs but this game doesn't define us as a group.

"There is a huge amount of talent. We tried to entertain and we certainly did that. We will come back stronger.

England are the second best team in the world, they should be in the final. But they're a new group of players with a new head coach. IF you look back to the commonwealth Games, they didn't even medal.

Today they weren't quite good enough.

  13. What was the crucial moment?published at 16:26 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2023

For me it was Nat Sciver-Brunt getting caught on the boundary. She had to go for it of course, but if she was still in, England win this game.

And if that last over had gone for 10, well then it's a different game.

Here are the crucial moments of that final over.

When Heather Knight was bowled it was all but done. South Africa then closed it out to spark wild celebrations...

The last over going for 18 is never ideal. It changes the momentum of things and the game going into the second innings.

But the first three overs England were on top and you think here we go. There was no moment where this game was won or lost.

Unfortunately for England they just weren't quite good enough.

Jason: Well played South Africa from an England fan. Now go on and win this thing.

Francis: Maybe it’s just a sign of where England are with their cricket but that is a MASSIVE upset. The big 3 are ways ahead of the others. Great to see an upset like this, the women’s game needs it. These 2 semi finals have been brilliant for the game.

  18. 'Final here we come'published at 16:19 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2023

Player of the match Tazmin Brits: "As a cricketer you dream of these moments to show up when it means the most. Thanks to the crowd, without them behind us this would not have been possible.

"We needed to accelerate a bit more in the powerplay especially against England. We said 140 was the minimum and 160 is what we were looking at. I wrote it down on a piece of paper, so to get 165 is great.

"I can't believe I caught it. I am very impressed and happy for that.

"You can see what it means. Final here we come."

South Africa were stunned by Sri Lanka in the first game of this tournament.

Their preparations were dominated by leaving their skipper Dane van Niekerk out of their squad because of her fitness issues.

This was not meant to happen.
