A day for bowlers, by and large, even though defending champions Surrey conceded 300 runs in an innings for the first time this season.

Just three batting points were earned across seven matches with some eye-catching bowling displays headed by England's Ollie Robinson, who returned figures of 7-59 for Sussex at New Road.

Gus Atkinson claimed 6-68 as Surrey eventually bowled out Essex for 314 and loan signing Henry Brookes took two wickets in an over twice on the way to career-best 6-20 for Derbyshire against Leicestershire.

We'll be back tomorrow from 10:30 for day two coverage. See you then.

    Yorkshire 62-5 v Glamorgan 245

Seven balls faced, two runs scored, and Jonny Bairstow will be back at the crease alongside Dawid Malan in the morning.

Yorkshire bowled out Glamorgan for 245, with Mickey Edwards and George Hill both taking three wickets, while Marnus Labuschagne top-scored with 65 for the visitors.

But Michael Neser has put Glamorgan firmly in the contest with 3-15, albeit two of the five Yorkshire wickets to fall were lower-order batters so a close-of-play score of 62-5 looks a lot worse than it probably is.

Work for the home side to do, though.

  4. Postpublished at 18:41 British Summer Time 4 May 2023

    Yorkshire 61-5 v Glamorgan 245

A semi-appeal for lbw off the bowling of Jamie McIlroy but Jonny Bairstow survives and gets off the mark with a single to fine leg.

Yorkshire again decide to protect Jonny Bairstow and send out Matt Fisher to join Dawid Malan.

14 balls left in the day's play at Headingley.

  7. Close of play at Southamptonpublished at 18:29 British Summer Time 4 May 2023

    Hampshire 229 v Warwickshire 82-0

Given Hampshire won the toss and were 83-1 just one ball before lunch, Warwickshire will be delighted to only be 147 runs behind at stumps with all 10 first innings wickets in hand.

James Vince's eye-catching unbeaten 75 and 49 from promising opener Fletcha Middleton were the highlights for the hosts, who had some starts but gifted the Bears several soft dismissals as they were ousted for what looks a below-par 229. Chris Woakes and Chris Rushworth collected three scalps apiece.

Alex Davies is unbeaten on 46 with Rob Yates on 26 overnight.

  8. wicket

WICKET - Shakeel lbw b Neser 19published at 18:24 British Summer Time 4 May 2023

    Yorkshire 51-3 v Glamorgan 245

A good delivery around the wicket from Michael Neser and Saud Shakeel has to go.

Is it Jonny? Nope - Mickey Edwards, who took three wickets with the ball earlier today, is now entrusted with shepherding Dawid Malan through to the close.

  9. Postpublished at 18:21 British Summer Time 4 May 2023

    Yorkshire 50-2 v Glamorgan 245

Jonny Bairstow is scheduled to be in next for Yorkshire - would they send him out if a wicket fell now?

  10. Close of play at Derbypublished at 18:18 British Summer Time 4 May 2023

    Derbyshire 144-3 v Leicestershire 122

As expected, that's all she wrote...

The day belongs to Derbyshire, and on-loan debutant Henry Brookes in particular. His career-best 6-20 off 12 overs helped skittle Leicestershire for 122, with Sol Budinger's 31 the only real resistance.

Derbyshire will resume with a lead of 22 on day two after openers Haider Ali (54) and Harry Came (49) gave them a blistering start to their reply.

Burns is beaten by another fine delivery and he is content to survive as play comes to an end.

After half centuries by Alastair Cook, Tom Westley and Matt Critchley, Essex slumped from 218-3 to 245-8 but managed to eke out a second batting point before their first innings came to an end.

Surrey's Gus Atkinson was the day's star performer with 6-68.

Firmly Warwickshire's day, at this stage, but the weather will determine how important it was over the next few days.

Liam Dawson is brought on to bowl by James Vince.
