Somerset began this Championship round in sixth place, marginally ahead of Notts and still with an outside chance of relegation to Division Two.

But Tom Lammonby made light of a green pitch and scored his first Championship century of the season after Kent won the toss and chose to bowl first, well supported by Lewis Goldsworthy, who resumes today (when the bad weather relents) on 70 not out.

All the pressure is on Kent to take early wickets on day two, most likely without Michael Hogan who was out of the attack injured after bowling 11.2 overs.

Lammonby said he is still learning his trade at this level, adding "Hopefully, what I have learned this summer will help me get out of ruts quicker in future."

“Having been put in on a potentially tricky pitch, we could have been in trouble had we lost early wickets. So it was nice for me to bat for most of the day, even if I am a bit frustrated at getting out near the end.”

Kent head coach Matt Walker was candid about his team's performance on a pitch that looked likely to favour seam bowling, saying: "Unfortunately we didn’t use the conditions to our favour. We just didn’t put enough balls in the right area."

  2. Murtagh 'should be celebrated' - Rhodespublished at 10:10 British Summer Time 20 September 2023

Will Rhodes hailed Middlesex seamer Tim Murtagh as a "fantastic servant to the game" after the veteran seamer took three wickets on the opening day at Lord's.

Warwickshire looked in control after bowling out the home side in the 40th over, but Murtagh's spell of 3-17 dented their hopes of a good start in reply.

Murtagh is to retire at the end of the season and Warwickshire skipper Rhodes - who is set to resume on 36 not out - said: "He looks like he’s still got plenty more in him.

"Around 900 first-class wickets is a ridiculous effort in the modern game and that should be celebrated. But we don’t want to give him too many more in this game.”

  3. 'Nice to get 1,000 out of the way' - Libbypublished at 10:08 British Summer Time 20 September 2023

Worcestershire opener Jake Libby admitted to having "half an eye" on reaching 1,000 Championship runs for the season during the 27 overs of play possible on day one against Durham.

Libby - who put on 96 for the first wicket with Gareth Roderick - ended the day four runs short of a half-century, having taken his seasonal tally to 1,001, the second time he has reached four figures in his career.

“I had half an eye on it but it's nice to get it out of the way and we’ve got two massive games and can really focus on that now and getting the results we need," he said.

“The pitch is a little bit tacky, a little bit slow, but I feel you can score on it."

Pace bowler Will Davis said Leicestershire had no problems focusing back on Championship cricket following their One-Day Cup triumph after they picked up all three bowling points on day one against Yorkshire.

"Saturday was a great day for us and it was good to be a part of it but we’re still in with a chance of trying to push the top two in this competition so it wasn’t difficult to get our minds ready to play," he said.

Davis took 4-28 in only his third game of the season and added: "I’ve had to wait my turn but I just did what I have been doing all season in the twos, just trying to keep bashing away and putting it in the right areas to give the ball a chance to do something.

“I don’t know what is happening next season as far as a contract is concerned. I’m just turning up and taking it day by day, trying to perform my best and see what happens.”

  5. Weather outlookpublished at 10:03 British Summer Time 20 September 2023

Not good. There's a lot of rain out there sweeping across the country from west to east - "the remnants of Hurricane Lee", according to BBC Weather.

We had play at six of the eight grounds yesterday but it looks like we could be in for a number of interruptions today.

It was a tough day to be a groundsman at some of our eight grounds yesterday - and today looks like being no different.

Division One leaders Surrey will be hoping to clean up the Northants lower order as quickly as possible, while second-placed Essex are in a good position to push on towards a big total against Hampshire.

In Division Two, Durham are still looking for the first of five points they need to clinch the title in their top-of-the-table game at Worcester.

Welcome to our coverage of day two. Whenever and wherever there is play, we'll be here to keep you up to date.
