Summary

  • Scotland's opening match in T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier

  • Top two from round-robin progress to 2024 tournament

  1. Postpublished at 4 overs

    Scotland 34-0 v Germany

Fourth over, fourth bowler. The captain, Venkatraman Ganesan, fancies a go at this opening pair.

Ollie Hairs opens the face of the bat very late, but it squirts away for four between two fielders at backward point and cover.

They might not be the most mobile, but they can both hit big.

  2. Hairs and Munsey tee offpublished at 3 overs

    Scotland 27-0 v Germany

Hairs is back on strike and he takes another big swing, guiding it to the rope. Another single allows Munsey on strike.

He plays back-to-back sweeps, finding the rope on both occasions - the second is mere inches from a maximum. An expensive over - 15.

  3. Postpublished at 2 overs

    Scotland 12-0 v Germany

And we have our first boundary, as Zadran pitches up and Ollie Hairs drills it through the covers. His next shot is a beautiful drive past the bowler and he picks up another four.

Immediately, Germany rotate the bowlers and Ghulam Ahmadi is for a spin. The visitors are trying to find a different way past the two left-handers.

  4. Postpublished at 1 over

    Scotland 4-0 v Germany

Four from the first over, with both batters off the mark - Scotland will take that. George Munsey will be looking to score, after missing so much of the World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe through illness.

Zahid Zadran is the next bowler into the German attack - a right-arm quick.

  5. Germany win the toss and elect to bowlpublished at 0.1 overs

    Scotland 0-0 v Germany

George Munsey and Ollie Hairs will open the batting for Scotland - two players who pack a punch.

The left-hander, Dieter Klein, begins the German bowling attack. Can they upset Scotland this afternoon?

And Munsey survives the first ball.

  6. A little more backgroundpublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

Scotland will play six games in the eight days, as they bid to qualify for the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup next June - held in the West Indies and the United States.

The top two teams from Europe’s Regional Finals will qualify. The other teams Scotland will face in this competition are: Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, and Jersey.

  8. What's all this then?published at 15:18 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Scotland v Germany (15:30)

Hang on, didn’t Scotland just fail to qualify for the World Cup? Well, yes - but that was the Cricket World Cup which is the ODI format of the game.

And weren’t they heroic in defeat? Beating Ireland, then the West Indies, then Zimbabwe - it was glorious… right up until that defeat to the Netherlands. Curse you, Bas de Leede.

What this is, is qualifying for the 2024 T20 World Cup. That’s just the 20 overs each, as compared to the 50 overs of the ODI format.

It’s much shorter, and even more of a slog-fest. Buckle up for some fast-paced cricket, massive sixes and fours crunched away to the boundary rope.

If anyone wrongly tells you cricket is boring, get them to watch this.

  9. Good afternoon!published at 15:15 British Summer Time 20 July 2023

    Scotland v Germany (15:30 BST)

Welcome to a rather overcast Edinburgh for some more cricketing action, with Scotland taking on Germany in the 2023 ICC T20 World Cup Europe Regional Finals.

Bit of a mouthful, isn’t it? Scotland's first game gets underway at 15:30 and we are steaming it live on this page, so don’t go anywhere.

That’s right, every ball from Goldenacre will be beamed straight to your screen - and that's the case for all of Scotland's games in the coming days.

I’m not telling you to bin The Ashes off - but do the right thing, yeah?
