    And there we have it.

The match has been called off without a ball bowled.

Thank you for your patience in sticking with us. We'll be back for the second ODI on Saturday from Trent Bridge, where hopefully the weather will be a little better.

Join us then, but goodbye for now!

Umpires Adrian Holdstock and Mike Burns, clad all in black, have leisurely strode out out to the middle. They're tapping and stamping on the troublesome area just before the bowlers' run-ups and the areas next to the pitch being used for the match.

The umpires are still stomping around on the area around the bowlers' run-ups. There isn't much movement from the players, who are still sat up in the dressing rooms.

We'll bring you news as soon as we have it.

England's decision to withdraw Harry Brook from this series against Ireland after naming him in their squad for the World Cup in India caught more than a few people on the hop, it seems.

Brook was the cover star for the official souvenir programme for the three matches at Headingley, Trent Bridge and Bristol.

    Groans and boos around Headingley.

A reminder the latest we can start is 17:32 so it's going to be tight.

  6. Pitch inspection at 16:45 BSTpublished at 16:14 British Summer Time 20 September 2023

    Delays... and more delays.

The ground staff are working very hard on the bowlers' run-ups, so we can assume that is the main concern right now because there hasn't been any rain for a while.

The groundstaff are now applying healthy amounts of sawdust to a troublesome damp patch just before the bowler's run-up at the Pavilion End of the ground.

Ireland's players have just made their way back to the pavilion giving patches of the outfield a cursory tap. The groundstaff are all in a huddle next to the pitch - lots of hands on hips, arms folded, and the occasional bit of pointing going on.

For now until the pitch inspection in just over 10 minutes' time, we're tasked with trying to work out what the umpires are saying with their body language and gestures.

It's proving quite difficult to read at the moment - but it definitely looks a lot brighter there.

Just been for a lap of the ground. As you would expect the Western Terrace is decidedly more subdued than it was for the Ashes Test here earlier in the summer. Around 14,000 tickets have been sold for this match, but I would estimate there's not even half that amount of people in Headingley at the moment.

  11. Inspection at 16:00 BSTpublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 20 September 2023

    Sigh.

There will be another inspection in half an hour's time.

The covers are off but some of the players are out in the middle, which looks soggy, and the umpires are hovering around some troublesome areas on the bowlers' run-ups.

It isn't currently raining but it has been raining solidly for a few hours - or let's be realistic, a few days.

The latest that we can start a 20-over game is 17:32 BST.

A reminder that none of England's World Cup squad are playing in this series against Ireland, apart from Joe Root, who is playing today to try and find some form ahead of the tournament.

So we'll have a new England captain in action, in Zak Crawley, and the potential for a few debutants as well.

Jamie Smith, George Scrimshaw, pictured, and Tom Hartley are among the new faces in the squad.

We'll bring you the team news as soon as we have any confirmation of a toss and start time.

    Thanks, Tim!

This optimism feels very odd having sat on a train from Cardiff this morning and just watching rain out of the window the entire time.

For now, we're just waiting on that 15:15 BST pitch inspection.

The shower from a little earlier has now passed over the ground, the sun is out and some good news - the covers on the pitch itself are now coming off.

Ireland's players, some wearing Emerald Green bobble hats, are milling about on the outfield.

The groundstaff at Headingley are now removing the final few ground sheets and continuing to mop up any damp patches on the outfield.

My colleague Ffion Wynne is on hand to talk to give you updates on a start time, length of the match and the toss.

Zak Crawley acknowledged he will lean considerably on Joe Root's wise counsel for this in the field for this shortened match.

"To have him in the side as a batsman and former captain is going to be tremendously useful for me and the team," said Crawley.

"No-one works harder than Joe, that's why he's the best. We all try to emulate him as much as we can. He's a great person to learn from and a role model for us all."

  17. Rain returns...published at 14:21 British Summer Time 20 September 2023

Those rain sheets which were removed from the bowlers' run-ups at what is colloquially known as the Football Ground End (now the Howard Stand) have now hastily been put back in place.

There's a few brollies going up as what is hopefully only a light shower passes over Headingley.

The groundsheets covering the run-ups for the bowlers are slowly being peeled away by diligent members of the groundstaff at Headingley.

Thankfully, the forecast for the rest of the afternoon looks pretty good.

The only caveat to all this is that we have had a lot of rain over the past 24 hours here in Leeds so the umpires will have to be happy everything under foot is fine.

The sun has broken through the clouds and bathed Headingley in late summer afternoon sunshine.

There's an extra spring in the step of the groundstaff now as they continue to dry up the outfield.
