India captain Rohit Sharma: "It was a good game for us to start. I thought it was magnificent. Especially the fielding, we take a lot of pride in that part of the game. We saw the effort from everyone today. In conditions like this sometimes it can be tough, but our bowlers used the conditions perfectly.

"We didn't want to start our innings like that. You have to give credit to the Aussies, some loose shots but that happens. With that sort of target you want to get off the mark as quick as possible. Credit to Virat and KL for creating that match-winning partnership.

"We're going to play on different pitches, you might have to change your combination. We're prepared to do that, we've been talking about it - whoever suits the conditions needs to do a job for us.

"The crowd never disappoints, they love their cricket and we love playing cricket in front of them. For them to be sitting there in that heat, it says a lot."

  3. 'We were at least 50 odd runs short'published at 17:40 British Summer Time 8 October 2023

Australia captain Pat Cummins: "We were at least 50 odd runs short. It was going to be tough defending 200 on that wicket. Their spinners in particular made it tough out there."

On the dropped catch: "I've already forgotten about it! It's not ideal, especially someone of Virat Kohli's calibre, but it happens. It would have been a dream start but it was not to be."

On Josh Hazlewood: "He was class like he always was. He poses a lot of questions to the opening batters and stays in that area. He was fantastic."

On how to respond from his defeat: "You have a bit of a review. It was a tough surface but we will assess what we could have done differently. It is only one game out of nine so we won't dwell on it, but there are areas to improve."

India have started with a win, they'll hope for a streak of positive results that puts pressure on other teams and gets them a smooth run to the semi-finals.

KL Rahul: "Quite honestly, there was not a lot of conversation when I came out, I was trying to catch my breath. I'd had a shower and thought I'd have half an hour or an hour's break. It was a bit of a rush. Virat said there was a bit of a help in the wicket, play proper shots and it was a bit like Test cricket.

"I think the pitch remained the same for most of the game, there was a bit of help for the fast bowlers and later the spinners. In the last 20 overs the dew played a part - the ball came onto the bat a bit better. It wasn't a great wicket to bat on, but it wasn't too helpful for the bowlers. It was a good wicket.

"The only way I could get a hundred was try a four and then a six. Hopefully some other time."

Sometimes you have bad games, and sometimes it's best to get them out of the way as quickly as possible.

Australia lacked intent with the bat. I always feel you should stay attacking, that doesn't mean just boundaries but showing intent, rotating the strike.

On wickets like this there's always a ball with your name on it, you need to force bowlers to do something different. Virat Kohli came in and hit Josh Hazlewood for four, the next ball was off line - that's what happens when you put pressure on the bowlers.

I was wondering how long it'd take Hardik Pandya. I think his plan was "you bowl at me, mid-on or mid-off, I'm going to take you on."

    Ind 182-4published at 39.5 overs

We finally have a six this innings!

It is just the third of the whole match as Hardik Pandya gives himself a few sighters before skipping down the track and powering Josh Hazlewood over long-off.

That Maxwell, rather than Zampa, has come on with the door slightly ajar suggests he's been the better bowler on the night.

  20. Ind 172-4published at 39 overs

Glenn Maxwell is brought back into the attack as Hardik Pandya comes out to the middle to join KL Rahul.

He does little to trouble the Indian batters though as they run four singles.
