  1. 50 runs

50 for Gareth Roderickpublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 137-1

A watchful innings after a very bright start yields Roderick a hard earned 50 off 112 balls.

It's the 37th half century of his career in this format.

He reaches the milestone via a thick inside edge off a back of a length Rushworth delivery through mid wicket for two.

Six fours in his innings to date.

  2. Postpublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 5 April

    Notts v Essex 83-2

Having said Dean Elgar had dropped anchor, he's just belted Dane Paterson for successive boundaries!

The South African punched one through the covers and then drilled the next ball, a half-volley, back down the ground to ensure that Essex keep the scoreboard ticking over in this post-lunch session.

  3. 3pm start at Hovepublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 5 April

    Sussex v Northants

Weather permitting of course. Looks fine here currently.

Team news after the coin toss at 2.30.

  4. 150 runs

up for Glamorganpublished at 14:19 British Summer Time 5 April

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 150-2

The wicket of Billy Root was unfortunate but Glamorgan are still in a very good position as they reach 150.

Sam Northeast is on 76 - three quarters of the way to an opening day ton.

  5. Postpublished at 14:17 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 134-1

Roderick drives Rushworth expansively to mid off but can't clear the field.

Another maiden over. Worcestershire very much becalmed since lunch. Just ten runs scored since the break.

Make that 11. Barnard is driven through cover for a single by Ali.

The fifth ball bounces awkwardly and leaves Roderick outside off but he survives on 48.

  6. Postpublished at 14:16 British Summer Time 5 April

    Notts v Essex 75-2

Lovely shot off the back foot by Jordan Cox, driving Lyndon James to the cover boundary as Essex look to build during this afternoon session.

Cox has done most of the scoring so far since lunch, moving on to 15 while Dean Elgar has dropped anchor somewhat on 31.

  7. Postpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 133-1

A very short mid on comes in for Barnard now - and Roderick defends on the back foot.

Barnard bowls a little fuller and wider and now Roderick blocks on the front foot.

He gets a single on the on side to keep the strike and move on to 48.

  8. wicket

WICKET Root b Brookes 67published at 14:07 British Summer Time 5 April

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 145-2

    Bowled 'im!!!

A first Middlesex wicket since his switch from Warwickshire and it's an absolute corker from Henry Brookes.

He gets one past Billy Root's bat and it crashes into the stumps. Always a great sight for any bowler.

More than decent first knock of the summer for the Glamorgan opener, though.

  9. Postpublished at 14:05 British Summer Time 5 April

    Notts v Essex 66-2

Nobody could accuse Jordan Cox of being static in his crease. The Essex batter started his innings by coming down the wicket to Dane Paterson and in this last over he's tended to move across to the off side.

Dangerous tactic against an experienced campaigner like Paterson, you feel and one delivery came back at Cox to prompt an LBW appeal that was turned down.

  10. get involved

Get Involvedpublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 5 April

JD Blues: Three matches, where all teams have been put into bat; lunch total of 303 runs & just four wickets! Kookaburra ball rubbish! Send the kookaburra back where it belongs with the Neanderthals! English cricket is always Dukes Only!

Not a popular move to use a different ball for the season opener, it seems.

  11. Postpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 5 April

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 139-1

A nice start to the afternoon session for the Glamorgan batters.

Not quite the same pace as this morning - maybe taking time to digest their Lord's lunch - but no wickets down.

Billy Root is on 66, with captain Sam Northeast one ahead of him.

  12. Postpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 129-1

Just one slip in place for Barnard, bowling to a defensive off side field.

Shot! Kashif Ali brings up the 50 partnership with Roderick with a front footed cover drive for four.

A solid and sedate partnership, coming in 122 balls.

  13. Pitch inspection at Headingleypublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 5 April

    Yorkshire v Leicestershire

Four games have fallen by the wayside so far, but they've not given up hope of some cricket at Headingley, where the Yorkshire and Leicestershire players have been twiddling their thumbs.

The umpires will have another look at 2.30 and hopefully they'll have a positive verdict to deliver...

  14. dropped catch

Kashif dropped 34published at 13:57 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 125-1

Roderick plays and misses Barnard outside off - and like Rushworth at the other end, this bowler is also getting movement off the seam.

Just a single off the over - to Kashif Ali.

In spite of the grim forecast elsewhere, the sun is shining here.

Rushworth is gun barrel straight and Kashif Ali defends into the off side.

The fourth ball is edged low and dropped by Yates at first slip, diving to his right. Tough chance but a chance nonetheless.

  15. Play resumes at Trent Bridgepublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 5 April

    Notts v Essex 66-2

Back under way after the lunch interval, with Dane Paterson - who picked up the wicket of Tom Westley late in the morning session - sending down the first over.

Paterson strays onto leg stump and Jordan Cox capitalises by whipping the ball off his pads to the boundary.

  16. Postpublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 123-1

Barnard is back of a length and Ali tries to dab the ball through third man but can't clear the field this time.

He subsequently leaves to see out a maiden over.

Chris Rushworth runs in from the Members End - and there's a hint of movement off the seam as the ball deviates in and cramps Roderick outside off.

Warwickshire keeper Burgess claims a catch off the fifth ball but the umpire says no. Too quick for Roderick and just missing the edge.

Successive maidens to start the session of play.

  17. Play abandoned for the day at Canterburypublished at 13:49 British Summer Time 5 April

    Kent v Somerset

    Alex Hoad
    BBC Sport at Canterbury

Desperately cruel as the sun beats down in Canterbury, but the opening day of the championship season has been abandoned.

Umpires Rob Bailey and Russell Warren were joined in the middle by match referee Simon Hinks at the end of the scheduled lunch interval but despite concerted efforts from the ground staff since the rain relented at 09:15 BST, the ground remains too wet for play.

The good news is the forecast for the remainder of the day, and the weekend, looks pretty positive.

  18. 'Glamorgan dominated the first session'published at 13:47 British Summer Time 5 April

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 120-1

    Nick Webb
    BBC Radio Wales

It may be a typical blustery April day at Lord’s but the pitch has proved far from typical as Glamorgan dominated the first session.

Toby Roland-Jones decided to bowl first and saw Ethan Bamber take the first wicket of the county season when Zain Ul Hassan edged behind for five.

Ryan Higgins, whose medium pace was chosen to open up, delivered six miserly overs but his colleagues have struggled to find any assistance.

Stand-in opener Billy Root was dropped at slip on 29 off Tom Helm but new skipper Sam Northeast was soon driving with due care and attention to race to the season’s first 50 and Root followed him soon afterwards as they put together a century stand at a healthy four runs an over.

  19. Pitch inspection at 14:30published at 13:45 British Summer Time 5 April

    Sussex v Northamptonshire

There will be a further pitch inspection at 14:30 BST at Hove before we can have any play.

Fingers crossed, if that all goes well, play will begin at 15:00, with a maximum of 51 overs in the day.

  20. Afternoon session begins at Edgbastonpublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 123-1

Just a single wicket for Warwickshire after winning the toss this morning. In fact, a combined total of four scalps for 303 runs across all active county games so far.

Of course, a few games haven't got started today.

But even so, that must be among the lowest ever wicket totals for the first session of a Championship season.

Roderick is one hit away from a half century - on 46. He'll resume batting with Kashif Ali, who edged a couple of balls early on but has largely looked comfortable and fluent for his unbeaten 33.

Ed Barnard will bowl to Ali.
