So there ends day one of 60 of the County Championship!

Let's be honest, things were looking a bit drab and bleak this morning, but we have probably have more play than we may have expected.

And it turned out to be an excellent day's play in the circumstances. Shout outs to Kashif Ali for a maiden first-class century and five wickets for Nottinghamshire's Dane Paterson.

But standing head and shoulders above the rest is Glamorgan's new red-ball captain Sam Northeast.

He lost the toss, but goes to bed 186 not out, a phenomenal effort on his first day in the job.

Thanks for your company today. We're back tomorrow morning (10:45 BST) and for every day of the season.

  3. Close of play at Headingleypublished at 18:50 British Summer Time 5 April

    Yorks v Leics 164-5

And that's that. Peter Handscomb plays out a maiden from Dan Moriarty and Leicestershire finish on 164-5 after being put in by Yorkshire at Headingley.

Handscomb has 20, with night-watchman Scott Currie on five when the Foxes resume in the morning.

  4. Postpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 5 April

    Yorks v Leics 164-5

Scott Currie's doing his job so far in terms of survival, but he's also added some runs to the total, punching Jordan Thompson off the back foot to the cover boundary.

Currie has to duck a short delivery as well and there'll be one more over to go on this opening day of the County Championship season.

  5. 'Huge blow struck by Yorkshire'published at 18:44 British Summer Time 5 April

    Yorks v Leics 159-5

Yorkshire have got that fifth wicket, again there was no foot movement from Rehan Ahmed.

He looked very good in going in with 28, but he stayed stuck on his crease. He tried to play it off the pitch.

That is a huge blow struck by Yorkshire.

  6. wicket

WICKET: Rehan Ahmed lbw b Moriarty 28published at 18:39 British Summer Time 5 April

    Yorks v Leics 159-5

Good decision to get Dan Moriarty into the attack!

Rehan Ahmed gets stuck in his crease and he's palpably leg before to the left-armer after a pugnacious 28 from 22 balls.

With just 15 deliveries left tonight, Scott Currie has come out as Leicestershire's nightwatchman.

  7. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 18:36 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 316-7

The umpires are having a chat about the light - and the meter readings are being taken.

That's stumps with 93 overs bowled out of the scheduled 96.

Did you see the nationwide forecast today? 93 overs is a triumph.

This game is fascinatingly poised after a great display from the Worcester top order took the visitors to 180-2.

Kashif Ali top scored for the Pears, hitting a maiden first class century before falling to Hannon-Dalby for 110.

Warwickshire fought back strongly this evening with four wickets snared for 36 runs in less than nine overs.

Matthew Waite counter-attacked the short ball with 37 off 42 balls before edging a short, wide ball from Will Rhodes (2-36) to the keeper.

The other five wickets were shared by five other bowlers: Hannon-Dalby, Rushworth, Booth, Barnard and Briggs.

  8. Postpublished at 18:34 British Summer Time 5 April

    Yorks v Leics 155-4

Yorkshire have turned to spin with five overs left in the day and left-armer Dan Moriarty gets a bowl, with his first over going for a single.

That's pretty much what the White Rose are after - trying to stem this flow of runs, with Rehan Ahmed and Peter Handscomb adding 40 in rapid time after that burst of wickets from George Hill.

  9. 'A little slower than expected'published at 18:34 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 316-7

    Melinda Farrell
Sports broadcaster/journalist on BBC Coventry & Warwickshire

It was a shorter delivery outside the off-stump, maybe a little bit slower than what he expected, he's just feathered it through to Michael Burgess behind the stumps.

So what was looking very positive for Worcestershire as far as a low order 'smash-athon' goes, it's abruptly brought to an end.

  10. Close of play at Trent Bridgepublished at 18:31 British Summer Time 5 April

    Notts v Essex 244-9

That's it for the opening day at Trent Bridge.

Umpires Steve O'Shaughnessy and Tom Lungley loitered in the middle for around 10 minutes or so, but they've eventually marched off and play is abandoned for the day.

Nottinghamshire will look to capture that final Essex wicket as quickly as possible in the morning.

  11. Postpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 5 April

    Yorks v Leics 146-4

Rehan Ahmed has been underlining his all-rounder's status with a flurry of boundaries to reach 20 from just 13 balls.

Peter Handscomb has also just found the rope, steering Matt Milnes through the covers and the Australian has 15 to his name.

We've got six more overs scheduled tonight.

  12. wicket

WICKET Waite c Burgess b Rhodes 37published at 18:25 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 316-7

Out of nowhere, Warwickshire have their seventh wicket.

A shorter ball with plenty of width from Will Rhodes and Matthew Waite has stayed in the crease and nicked off to the keeper.

Second wicket for Rhodes, who also dismissed Roderick.

New Zealander Nathan Smith will have a bat.

  13. Postpublished at 18:23 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 316-6

Shot! Four more to Waite with a back foot whip through mid wicket off Rhodes.

He's attacked the short ball relentlessly.

He'll keep the strike with a single off the last ball.

Four more pulled square and Waite has 36 off 39 balls.

He gets a single off the fifth ball behind square, where OHD fields.

Four overs left tonight - assuming the heavens don't open and the light doesn't close.

As well as the first day of the County Championship, there was a huge announcement for the future of the game with a £35 million investment promised by the Government into the game's grassroots.

That news should be greeted warmly by all of us who hold this great game close to our hearts.

  15. Bad light stops play at Trent Bridgepublished at 18:19 British Summer Time 5 April

    Notts v Essex 244-9

The floodlights have been on for some time, but now the umpires have conferred and come to the conclusion that it's too dark to continue.

Nottinghamshire have had the spinner Calvin Harrison on alongside the medium pace of Lyndon James, but even so they're calling a halt to proceedings for now.

Unclear whether that's it for the day though...

  16. Postpublished at 18:17 British Summer Time 5 April

    Warwks v Worcs 304-6

The Pears reach 300 in the 90th over of the day via a pull to leg by Waite off the bowling of Booth.

Warwickshire had a resurgence in this session of play, taking four wickets for 36 at one stage.

But the seventh wicket pair of Waite and Holder have settled Worcestershire nerves and ensured the promising start given by their top order hasn't been squandered.

Waite moves to 25 with a leg glance off Rhodes for four.

  17. Close of play at Lord'spublished at 18:16 British Summer Time 5 April

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 370-3

Colin Ingram plays out a maiden to the final over of the day from Toby Roland-Jones, although there is one ball that goes perilously close to the stumps.

No doubt who the star of the day is, though.

Sam Northeast walks off unbeaten on 186, as he shared stands of 129 with Billy Root (67) and 176 with Kiran Carlson (77).

What a day for the new Glamorgan red-ball captain.

  18. Postpublished at 18:14 British Summer Time 5 April

    Notts v Essex 244-9

Essex are in genuine danger of missing out in terms of batting bonus points now, a situation which looked very unlikely when Dean Elgar and Jordan Cox were going along so well earlier this afternoon.

It's up to last pair Sam Cook and Jamie Porter to try and scramble another six runs and get the visitors up to 250.

Cook has just edged Lyndon James fractionally short of second slip, with the Notts bowler seeking his third wicket of the innings.

  19. Close of play at Hovepublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 5 April

    Sussex v Northants 95-2

    Never mind.

38 overs is good going by today's grim weather standards.

Northants will be the happier of the two sides at this point, but Sussex will be encouraged by hints of turn for Carson, and the good control and movement generated by Jayden Seales in particular.

But the highlight for the hosts was THAT catch by their new skipper and keeper, John Simpson.

Northants skipper Luke Procter resumes tomorrow on 41.

Karun Nair has an unbeaten 12.

  20. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 18:12 British Summer Time 5 April

    Middlesex v Glamorgan 370-3

It goes down as a dropped catch, but that would have been a brilliant catch from Sam Robson.

Colin Ingram edges a wide one from Henry Brookes and it flies high to Robson's left-hand as he dives full length, but can't cling on.

That would have been welcome so late in the day.
