Lando Norris led team-mate and title rival Oscar Piastri to a McLaren one-two in Friday practice at the Austrian Grand Prix.

Norris was 0.157 seconds quicker than Piastri, with Red Bull's Max Verstappen third fastest, 0.318secs off the pace.

Aston Martin's Lance Stroll took fourth place, ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and the Mercedes of George Russell.

McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari all have upgrades to their cars this weekend.

McLaren have new front suspension shaping that is aimed at working with a new front wing that was first tested at the last race in Canada.

Red Bull have a new floor edge. Ferrari, for whom Lewis Hamilton was 10th fastest, have a completely redesigned new floor, their first upgrade since Bahrain in April.

Second practice is now done and dusted.

McLaren's Lando Norris is the fastest driver, his team-mate Oscar Piastri is in second - now wouldn't that be a great line-up at the front of the track on Sunday?

Max Verstappen makes the top three.

  9. Long run cornerpublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 27 June

    Andrew Benson
    BBC F1 correspondent

Everyone's on different tyres, which is annoying. But, interestingly, the fastest driver, at least until he got later into his run, on the medium tyre was Kimi Antonelli in the Mercedes. He was actually going quicker than Norris in the McLaren, although his lap times have tailed off now as he goes longer into his run.

But like for like, Antonelli was a little bit quicker than Norris on the mediums. And both of them are a little bit quicker than Charles Leclerc, although Leclerc looks in decent shape as well.

Max Verstappen has been speeding down the track.

"Struggling a lot with the front now," he says down the team radio.

A quick pitstop trip for him to change his tyres.

Nico Hulkenberg has been on the radio.

"I'm not feeling the love, somehow. A lot of the front is not really gripping in many places."

The Sauber driver is down in 19th spot.

Meanwhile his rookie team-mate Gabriel Bortoleto is up in eighth.

    Less than minutes to go.

Drivers are on race laps now.

Lewis Hamilton is currently in 10th spot. It hasn't been the best day for him. Earlier in FP1, he had to take a trip to the Ferrari engineers for a gearbox issue.

Esteban Ocon's car is in the Haas garage, he is out of the car as the engineers surround it and get to work. I wonder what the issue might be.

  15. 'Good lap from Verstappen'published at 16:45 British Summer Time 27 June

    Alice Powell
British racing driver on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Max Verstappen's time (for P3) is enough to make the McLarens worried, I would say, depneding on what they're running, of course. But a good lap from Max; you could say he was maximising as much as he could, because he was running right up to the edge of the gravel, almost dipping a wheel through Turn Nine.

  16. Postpublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 27 June

A little over 15 minutes to go of second practice.

The clouds over scenic Spielberg have been a moody grey, but no rain so far.

Max Verstappen is up to third spot now. All 20 drivers have the red C5 soft tyres bolted on.

  17. McLaren upgrades working?published at 16:41 British Summer Time 27 June

McLaren have brought new front and rear suspension aerodynamics and rear geometry upgrades to the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg.

It's the first time Lando Norris is testing it out and by the looks of things, so far so good.

The McLaren driver remains the fastest in second practice. His team-mate Oscar Piastri is just a tenth of a second behind him.

  18. Verstappen 'very much in the game'published at 16:39 British Summer Time 27 June

    Andrew Benson
    BBC F1 correspondent

My interpretation of that Yuki Tsunoda lap time (1:05.292) is that Max Verstappen is in contention for pole position, because he came out on the soft tyres first off in this session - he's not run the mediums like everyone else - so that soft tyre lap from Verstappen is not representative at all.

Tsunoda is seven tenths off the McLarens, and that's what he's been off Verstappen all season since he got in the Red Bull. And McLaren boss Andrea Stella has been saying, don't pay too much attention to Friday practice times from Red Bull, because they don't run the spec that we do.

Verstappen is very much in the game, even though it doesn't look like it from the lap times.

  19. Postpublished at 16:37 British Summer Time 27 June

It has been a fairly quiet session for Max Verstappen.

The Red Bull driver took his time to join second practice and is currently seventh

Verstappen excels at this track, he has won the most races at the Austrian Grand Prix, four in total.

It's five wins in total at the Red Bull Ring, thanks to the 2021 Styrian Grand Prix.

  20. 'McLaren looks hooked up'published at 16:36 British Summer Time 27 June

    Alice Powell
British racing driver on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

That McLaren looks so hooked up. Lando Norris is driving it fantastically, his inputs were nice and smooth and, particulary with some of the other onboards we've seen, like at Alpine, that car looks so hooked up. I know it's early days, but they've put down a strong benchmark.
