Lando Norris is taking the early shift for McLaren so Oscar Piastri is on media duties and having a chat with Sky Sports.

"I don't think anyone expected rain in Bahrain, so that was a slight spanner in the works yesterday," the Australian said of the weather conditions on Thursday.

"I think still achieved a fair bit and learned a lot. Excited to try and get a few more laps in this afternoon. I think it's all going pretty well."

On how the engineers are feeling so far, Piastri said: "I think reasonably happy, yes. We've been trying a lot of things and our programme has been going pretty smoothly, and i think we've been getting some pretty clear reads on what different changes do - which is what you want at this part of the season.

"In terms of pace, I don't really know where we see it; it's kind of hard to say. There have been some runs that have looked good and some runs that haven't looked so good; that's kind of looked the story for everybody a little bit, but I think we're still pretty confident.

"We're not going to know until we get to Melbourne, but I think the signs have been positive."

Finally, finally, the teams can see some sunshine, and it’s not just more comfortable from a human perspective (even though Aston Martin team boss Andy Cowell did make that point on Thursday).

The track temperature rises more significantly than the air temperature as the sun warms the surface, and that gives the teams more representative conditions for tyre behaviour.

Last night, McLaren team principal Andrea Stella referenced how unusual conditions have been so far this week, but this morning is providing a window for teams to see how their cars react as the track heats up.
