Yuki Tsunoda had his first crash for Red Bull in second practice at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix as Lando Norris set the pace for McLaren.

The Japanese, who was parachuted into Red Bull to replace Liam Lawson after two races of this season, clipped the inside wall at the final corner and was catapulted into the wall on the outside.

Norris was 0.163 seconds quicker than team-mate Oscar Piastri as McLaren again appeared to have the edge on the competition.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen was third fastest, 0.280secs off Norris' best.

The only two overtaking opportunities I'd try my hand at here are Turn One and Turn 27. It's a hard track to follow on with the high-speed nature.

That's our lot from Friday practice in Jeddah.

Lando Norris puts his McLaren at the head of the field with a 1:28.267 on the soft compound. It's a team one-two as Oscar Piastri finishes second, while Max Verstappen ends his hour in third.

Lando Norris and Max Verstappen are racing already. The McLaren goes down the inside of the Red Bull but can't make the move stick. Some excitement to end the hour.

The McLarens have looked quickest on one lap. On a long run they are on another planet - Oscar Piastri is a second a lap quicker nearly compared to Max Verstappen on the first four laps of their long runs.

Session will resumepublished at 19:00 British Summer Time 18 April

The recovery truck has picked up Yuki Tsunoda's car, so the rest of the field line up to head out for the last dregs of this session. George Russell asked the Mercedes crew member if his arm's getting tired because he's been holding it up for so long.

Red Bull won't be impressed by that, that's for sure. Tsunoda has shown some promise but when it's mattered, he's fallen back. Hitting the inside wall at the last corner is not good, it's a basic misjudgement that racing drivers at this level shouldn't be making.

  12. red flag

Tsunoda hits the wallpublished at 18:56 British Summer Time 18 April

Yuki Tsunoda clipped his left front tyre which sent him straight into the wall. Lando Norris was behind the Red Bull man and saw it all. That's probably the last action we'll see today.

  13. red flag

The yellow flag has turned to red. Yuki Tsunoda is climbing out of the Red Bull, which is now in a bit of a mess. Looks like he's hit the inside of the wall.

Thanks, Harry. 50p on a safety car making an appearance on Sunday then. The top nine drivers are all clocking data on the mediums; Alex Albon in 10th is four laps in to a stint on the hards.

A driver who is below the top runners is Lewis Hamilton. It's been another quiet session for the seven-time world champion. He;s down in 13th place with a time of 1:29.371 on the board.

With less than 14 minutes of the session remaining, it's time for drivers to gather as much information as possible with some long runs. Lando Norris has to cut the corner at the start of the lap after locking up in the McLaren, while Haas boss Ayao Komatsu chats with Sky Sports on the pit wall.

Three radio messages, all with the same issue.

"I touched the wall with the front left," says Oscar Piastri.

"I think I skimmed the wall," reports Alex Albon.

"I clipped the wall, box," adds Kimi Antonelli.

Touch, skim, clip. Be aware of those walls.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are looking like the cars to topple this weekend. But which one of the McLarens will be triumphant?

Max Verstappen has put away his soft tyres and is now back to some medium running. Charles Leclerc is yet to put a red time on the board, but the Ferrari man does now and goes fourth quickest behind the Dutchman. Leclerc is nearly half a second away from Oscar Piastri's top time.
