    Andrew Benson
    BBC F1 correspondent

Bad news for one of the competitors, Gabriel Bortoleto in the Sauber: they have discovered a fuel leak in the car and it can't be repaired for this session so he won't be taking any part in it.

There were lots of questions put to Max Verstappen about his Red Bull future yesterday, after motorsport adviser Helmut Marko told Sky Germany he has "great concern" about the Dutchman potentially leaving the team.

"A lot of people are talking about it except me," said Verstappen on Thursday.

"Like I said before, I just want to focus on my car, work with the people in the team - that's the only thing I'm thinking about in Formula 1 at the moment.

    "I'm very relaxed."

And who's this on the phone in the Saudi paddock? Verstappen's manager, Raymond Vermeulen. This means absolutely nothing, obviously, but still a good spot by the photographers.

  5. Reprimand for Lawsonpublished at 17:52 British Summer Time 18 April

Liam Lawson has received his first reprimand (driving) of the season.

The New Zealander was under investigation for failing to follow the race director's instructions in first practice by twice entering the painted area between the pit entry and the track.

Racing Bulls didn't let Lawson know his first breach had been noted because he was on a push lap, before he did the same thing again three laps later. He was notified of his offences when he returned to the garage.

"Notwithstanding the team's decision not to warn the driver," reads the FIA doc, "the driver ought to know what is in the event notes and Lawson confirmed he did know of the prohibition."

  6. Gasly quickest in FP1published at 17:48 British Summer Time 18 April

    Pierre GaslyImage source, Getty Images

The unfamiliar sight of an Alpine at the top of the timesheets is what greeted us at the end of the first hour of running. Pierre Gasly headed Lando Norris' McLaren by 0.007 seconds followed by the Ferrari of Charles Leclerc in third.

Plenty of drivers had brushes with the walls at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, while world champion Max Verstappen flagged more issues with his Red Bull, this week highlighting the balance of the car and a loose feel, "especially in the high speed".

  7. Welcome backpublished at 17:45 British Summer Time 18 April

Alpine's Pierre Gasly set the pace ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris in first practice at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

Gasly completed his performance run on soft tyres later than the usual front-runners, benefitting from more track grip, as he pipped Norris by 0.007 seconds.

Norris, leading the championship from team-mate Oscar Piastri by three points after four races, was 0.063secs quicker than Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.

Piastri was fourth, 0.095secs off Norris, ahead of Williams' Alex Albon and Mercedes' George Russell.

First practice of the weekend done and dusted.

Pierre Gasly in the Alpine tops the hour with a 1:29.239 on the soft compound.

A late message from Charles Leclerc, who finishes fourth, as he tells his Ferrari pit wall he touched the wall at Turn Four.

Lando Norris ends his session second on the timesheets.

A lack of balance is top priority over at Williams and Red Bull. Alex Albon is first to flag issues followed by four-time world champion Max Verstappen. The Dutchman receives instructions regarding Turn 13 but Verstappen says it just won't happen.

  16. Postpublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 18 April

Lando Norris reaches Turn 22 in his McLaren but a slight twitch of oversteer leaves him slightly off-kilter. He spoke candidly yesterday about how he is having to drive in a different manner in order to get the best out of the car this season compared to last year. His time on the softs today is only 0.007 seconds off top runner Pierre Gasly.

  17. Postpublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 18 April

Carlos Sainz is having an interesting exchange with his Williams engineer. The Spaniard and his pit wall are discussing differing ways to recharge the battery.

Tinkering complete over at Mercedes, so George Russell heads out on a set of the medium tyres. First practice leader Pierre Gasly also takes to the rapid circuit on the yellow rubber.

"I'm very loose in high speed," says Max Verstappen, as the Red Bull driver leaves the garage on the mediums.

  19. Postpublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 18 April

Work is going on with George Russell's car - the Briton is sixth following his soft runs - just as Carlos Sainz makes a radio call to Williams to flag a nervous moment with one of the Ferraris. Seems like the Spaniard was on a flyer and a red car had no idea.
