Right, I don't want to, but I've got to bring this live to an end.

Some debate over whether we close on an image of the incoming Rob Cross or the outgoing Phil Taylor.

But I've gone with the 27-year-old former electrician who just produced one of the greatest performances of all time to beat the sport's greatest-ever player.

Phil Taylor, the 16-time world champion, is bidding farewell to darts.

But there's a new kid on the block. And he's already conquered the world.

    Thanks for your company. Goodnight.

A 27-year-old former electrician has just demolished the greatest darts player of all time.

And we will never get to see 16-time World Champion Phil Taylor walk on to a darts stage again.

What a rollercoaster of a night.

Imran Sidat: That was flawless from Rob Cross. It's remarkable to produce that standard in your first ever World Championship!

MJF: In another universe, Taylor nailed double 12 for the 9 darter and pulled it back to 3-2, so beginning the fairy tale end to his career.

I'm emotional. More so about the quality of those darts from Rob Cross.

The 167 checkout to win the second set, the deadly double eight for the fifth set and the 140 finish to seal the deal.

Taylor had his chances. He missed double 12 for a nine-dart leg and averaged over 102, but there was only one man in that final.

Cross takes it with a 107 three-dart average, 11 maximums and a 60% doubles average.

    SENSATIONAL.

Totum: Rob Cross. World Darts Champion. His first year as a professional - astonishing stuff. A timely new year reminder that anything can be possible in 2018. I might try and become Pope or win the Bake Off. Maybe both.

Rob Cross might have won the trophy, but this is still Phil Taylor's night.

He's on stage, singing his heart out to Coldplay's 'When I ruled the World'. Apparently this is what he's always wanted.

16 times the Power has been crowned the Champion of the World.

No tears from Phil, but everyone else has gone.

Phil Taylor is in a reflective mood on stage.

"I tried my best but he was like me 25 years ago, he was relentless and didn't stop putting me under pressure," he says.

"He's dedicated, he's listened, learned and the players next year have got a big problem.

"You've got someone who wants to win, I don't think the money with him is going to make a scrap of difference, you've got a little animal on your hands.

"It was like an old man against a young man, it was a mis-match. That's it for me because I haven't got the energy or interest to beat Michael van Gerwen or him."

Luke Almond: Rob Cross simply ripping up the rule book. Fairly sure it’s traditional to miss a least 5 darts to win your first world title, not to checkout a ton plus finish!

Luke Rundle: And the crown has now been passed. I cannot wait to see Cross in the Premier League.

Theo Bowyer: Take a bow Rob Cross... demolition job

"I feel great but it's Phil's last year and it's about him departing. That's why I let him lift the trophy.

"It was my dream to play him 15 years ago and now I have.

"I was actually born in 1990 when he won his first title. He won the trophy and I took my first breath of air."

The Power receives his runner-up trophy. But here comes the Champion...

"ROBBY ROBBY CROSS" rings around the Ally Pally. I'm pleased.

Taylor is given a lift of the trophy, but he'll have to let go. That's not his.
