So what next for Luke Littler? Brendan Dolan has beaten Gerwyn Price and Gary Anderson to reach the quarter-finals, he will be no pushover.

The winner of that match faces former champion Rob Cross or Chris Dobey - who whitewashed reigning champion Michael Smith - in the semis.

Whatever happens, we are in for some fantastic darts in the new year.

Three-time world champion John Part, speaking on Sky Sports: "He really is a great player. I have to put aside that he is 16, that was a performance from any player where you say he can win the tournament if you play like that.

"He won easily, it was a great performance. Those are darts that win titles.

"In the longer format, against a great of the game [van Barneveld] averaging 100, Littler made him look insgnificant.

"Raymond was chuckling, he handled it very well, he is a great of the sport. He will be heartbroken, it was a big chance for Ray - but it is a bigger chance for Luke."

Luke Littler faces the 28th seed Brendan Dolan in the quarter-finals. You would not bet against this teenager's run continuing after new year.

On whether he can picture himself as world champion: "No. I just looked at the draw, I've got Brendan Dolan next. I do fancy myself, but we have Brendan next.

On his new year plans: "I've got all the media to do! But then I'll see my family and chill out."

Luke Littler averaged 105.01 in that match.

He is born to be a darts superstar. If you cut this young man open, he would probably be made of tungsten.

With his first dart at double 15, Littler finds his mark. He has won.

Oooooh, van Barneveld chucks in a 41 to start the leg. Advantage Littler.

If Littler holds, he wins the match. He chucks 63 to set up 170. Big fish to win the match?

A rare wayward visit from Littler, 45 from three darts. A first sign of pressure?

Van Barneveld cannot finish from 81, but has another three darts for the leg.

He needs all three, but with double eight, we go to a deciding leg.

Littler has just thrown the 15th 180 of the match. He has hit maximum in each of the last four legs, and nine in total. Awesome.

He gets a 47 finish, throwing single seven then his trusty double top.

Van Barneveld is still throwing well, not cowed at all. He can set up from 161 as Littler hasn't made a finish.

Littler hits 180, but Barney needs 24 for the leg - it takes three darts, but he makes it.

Single 20, double 10... Littler is two holds of throw from the last eight.

In any other scenario, 56-year-old van Barneveld averaging 100.81 for a place in the world quarter-finals would be a sensational story.

But he is firmly second billing tonight.

LITTLER THROWS 180. That's the 12th of the match.

He has a 128 finish... but misses.

Van Barneveld, with single 12 then double six, holds throw and wins his first set of the match.

Van Barneveld will win the set if he breaks Littler here.

But Littler gets to a finish well ahead, and sets up a 92 finish with Barney on 141.

Littler misses D18, so can Barney capitalise? No...

So Littler has three at the double 18 again, and strikes the second.

2-2 in set three. Littler is one leg from the quarter-finals.

Littler gets to a 170 finish to break Barney's throw.

T20, T20... he hits 25! That would have been the crowning glory.

But van Barneveld cannot make a finish, leaving Littler with 25 for the set.

However Littler misses them! And with a double 16, Barney keeps himself in this match by the skin of his teeth.

John Part on TV comms suggests the kebab shop is closing at 10 so Littler wants to get a shift on.
