It just wasn't meant to be for Piers Gilliver but he can still be immensely proud of his achievements out here.

A silver medal is no mean feat for someone who only started to get UK Sport funding midway through the Paralympic cycle.

"That was nail-biting," team-mate Gemma Collis told me afterwards. "Knowing Piers he will be gutted, but silver is amazing.

"I'm so proud of him and hopefully once he has got over the disappointment, he will realise what an incredible achievement this is for him."

  2. 'Probably my last Paralympics,' says Weirpublished at 22:39 British Summer Time 13 September 2016

    Men's T54 1500m

David Weir reflects on fourth-place finish: "There's two top guys that are pushing really quick on not the fastest track in the world," said the four-time London 2012 gold medalist on Channel 4.

"I was bumped about a bit but this is wheelchair racing. I was comfortable but it wasn't a struggle I think tonight.

"The Thais are so good because they prioritize the worlds and the Paralympics so they're at their best when it matters.

"I'm never going to reenact London because it was too special and too big of an ask. But I'll be happy to go home with a medal at probably my last Paralympics."

Going into the bell lap he wasn't in a bad position but with 300m to go, he was missing pushes, and I think he timed his attack wrong.

At the point he needed to make a move he didn't get the draft. If he had gone earlier, he could have medalled but he wasn't going to get gold tonight.

He just didn't have the top speed, he didn't have the endurance.

  4. Weir loses T54 1500m titlepublished at 22:30 British Summer Time 13 September 2016

The wait goes on for a Rio medal for GB's David Weir. He comes home in fourth.

Thailand's Prawat Wahoram snatches his title in 3:00.62, ahead of Marcel Hug of Switzerland in second and fellow Thai racer Saichon Konjen in third.

That's a second gold of the Games for Wahoram.

GB's David Weir is hanging back, biding his time. Easy does it...

But now he's stuck in traffic near the back of the pack. Is he ready for the break?

It falls to the 15-year-old Ellie (Robinson) to console the more experienced Ellie (Simmonds) by the pool after the swimmer won bronze but lost her London title.

"I know how much she wanted this - I'm just so proud of you for everything you've done."

Robinson finished in fourth place with a personal best.

For me winning a medal of any colour here in Rio would be an achievement for Dave tonight.

He works so hard in training but I don't think those around him fear him the way that they did four years ago. Then they were always looking at what he was doing and then reacting, now they are more confident of their own plans.

It will be interesting to see how Switzerland's Marcel Hug goes tonight, he's won two silver and two bronze medals and just never seems to show what he can do when it comes to a Paralympics despite all the golds he's had at European and world championships.

It would be great to see Dave and Marcel go head to head tonight but I think the Thailand athletes will have a big say in the results."

Brilliant from the USA's Tatyana McFadden. She claims her second gold in Rio and her fifth in the Paralympics.

McFadden stormed into a 25m lead after the first lap, and although her American compatriots caught up with her on the home straight, she holds on to win in 3:22.50 - a Paralympic record.

    Men's T54 1500m final (22:22 BST)

Four-time London 2012 winner David Weir is back on the track tonight and is looking to collect his first medal in Rio.

The 37-year-old finished a disappointing fifth in the 400m event on Monday - the same day he welcomed his fourth child, Lenny, into the world.

But Weir looked sharp in the heats for the 1500m - finishing second - and is looking for his third consecutive title in the final, which starts at 22:22 BST.

He's got stiff competition from world champion Rawat Tana of Thailand and long-time rival Marcel Hug of Switzerland.

    Women's quarter finals - GB 35-19 China

It's a comfortable lead at half-time for the GB women's team - they have opened up a 16-point cushion.

They are simply too fast for their Chinese opponents, as Helen Freeman and Robyn Love score two breakaway baskets.

Freeman follows that up with an excellent shot from long range as she sinks a three-pointer to end the half.

    Women's T54 1500m final (22:14 BST)

The USA's Tatyana McFadden has already had two shiny Rio medals around her neck - one gold and one silver.

It could be time for another in a few minutes, when she aims to defend the T54 1500m title she won in London.

The 27-year-old is competing in her fourth games, has won 12 Paralympic medals in total, and is also an 11-time world champion in the T54 events.

She's the favourite for her race at 22:14 BST, and currently holds the world record. She competes alongside fellow American Amanda McGrory, who broke the Paralympic record in Monday's heats.

It's a quieter evening for British athletes here at the Joao Havelange Stadium, but two strong medal chances.

Libby Clegg and her guide Chris Clarke already have the 100m crown in the bag from earlier in the competition and tonight bid for a second gold in the 200m.

And can Dave Weir reignite his Paralympic Games with a medal in the 1500m after the disappointment of finishing fourth in the 400m?

Weir is not the athlete he was four years ago - when he won four gold medals - but if he gets his tactics right he can still challenge for the major medals.

    Men's and women's wheelchair doubles

After being delayed by the intense heat in Rio, wheelchair doubles pair Gordon Reid and Alfie Hewett are underway in their semi-final against Japan.

Waiting to get on court are another GB pair in Jordanne Whiley and Lucy Shuker, who face Yui Kamji and Miho Nijo of Japan. They will do battle for the women's doubles bronze medal.

It will be a strange contest for Whiley and Kamji, who are doubles partners on the Grand Slam tour. They picked up the Wimbledon title together over the summer.

They're due out at 23:00 BST.

He came from four points behind to take it to the wire, but Britain's Piers Gilliver has to settle for silver in the men's individual epee.

China's Sun Gang, the reigning world champion, gets to the 15-point mark first to take the gold.

Gilliver, from Cheltenham, is competing in his Paralympics and adds to the silver he picked up in the European Championships earlier this year.
