There's no Andrey Arshavin or Roman Pavlyuchenko in the Russia squad, but Premier League fans will recall ex-Chelsea left-back Yuri Zhirkov, who starts tonight.

Playmaker Alan Dzagoev - who was excellent at stages of the last Euros - is on the bench.

This is South Korea's eighth World Cup in a row (since 1986); only Brazil, Germany, Italy, Argentina and Spain can boast a longer streak than that.

However, South Korea have only won two of their last 10 World Cup games (against Togo in 2006 and Greece in 2010).

All that planning, no action. I've had holidays like that.

These are Russia's first finals since 2002, and they have not made it out of the group stage since 1986!

They are due a good run - but on paper at least they do not have too many star names.

Background: The stadium was purpose built for the World Cup, and is likely to have its capacity reduced by 10,000 after the tournament. It is one of the smallest World Cup venues, and there are question marks over its long-term value after the tournament. The city's two teams, Cuiaba and Mixto, play in the third and fourth tiers of Brazilian football respectively, usually in front of sparse crowds

Construction hit a number of snags, including a fire in October 2013, meaning the stadium did not host its first test event until April. In May a worker died after being electrocuted during the installation of a communications network.

Four years ago Fabio Capello's World Cup ended in a humiliating, disastrous defeat.

His England side were not just beaten by Germany, they were shown up as slow, one-dimensional and past it. As 4-1 batterings go, it was pretty conclusive.

Four years on the Italian has another chance on the biggest of stages though. He has steered Russia to the finals and tonight his side start their Group H campaign.
