"Could that be the moment? Lionel Messi, from not the easiest of angles, just tries to roll it in the far corner. How often have we seen him score from there?"

"Of all the people. There was a massive intake of breath. You're just waiting for the net to bulge."

    Lionel Messi shoots

    What a chance!

Lionel Messi gets in behind, he's onside this time, wide out to the left of the penalty area, he hits a low shot, the ball beats Manuel Neuer - and beats the far post.

    A fraction wide.

The right man in the right place. The wrong result.

Javier Mascherano springs a cracking pass over the top to find Gonzalo Higuain - he's in on goal again but he's offside again.

Almost the way through though. Argentina starting the second half on top.

And we are back in play in the Maracana.

  6. SUBSTITUTIONpublished at 21:04 British Summer Time 13 July 2014

And Argentina make that change at the break - Sergio Aguero is on at half-time to replace Ezequiel Lavezzi.

    Clarence Seedorf
    MOTD analyst

"Logically Germany should win because they have been the best team in the tournament but Argentina are knocking on the door. Germany need to speed up and use more of the left hand side."

    Alan Hansen
    MOTD analyst

"The Germans have had a lot of possession. If [Manchester City striker] Sergio Aguero comes on for Argentina then he could make a difference. It's been a terrific game for a 0-0. It's been end to end and really, really open."

Argentina have Sergio Aguero and maybe Angel Di Maria (fitness permitting) on the bench, while Germany could have Mario Gotze and Lukas Podolski in play before long.

BBC Sport Chief Football Writer Phil McNulty at the Maracana

"Goalless at half-time but in no way dull. Chances for both sides and Argentina's counter-attacking plan working well. Lionel Messi's speed is causing problems for Mats Hummels but Benedikt Howedes cam closest of all with that header right on half time."

I can neither confirm or deny rumours that Rihanna is set to replace Alan Hansen on Match of the Day. But she knows a good counter when she sees one.

"The thing about the high line is that you can't come and sweep. You just need one little ball in and the goalkeeper's in no man's land."

Argentina completed 133 passes to Germany's 307 in that half - but Argentina almost cut through a few times.

    Former England international Chris Waddle
    BBC Radio 5 live

"Argentina started well with their game plan, Germany haven't got the pace at the back to deal with Lionel Messi and Gonzalo Higuain, but as the game wore on Germany have got into it. Argentina will be delighted the half-time whistle has come. The longer the game goes on I think the more it will suit Germany, because Argentina will tire."

"Gonzalo Higuain had a gift of a chance in the first half [fired wide of the keeper's right-hand post] - he was slow, pedestrian and laborious."

  18. Postpublished at 20:51 British Summer Time 13 July 2014

    Former England defender Danny Mills
    BBC Radio 5 live

"It is 0-0 but a fascinating game. Both sides have now had one great opportunity each. Argentina will have learned from the Algerians, who kept dinking balls over the top and caused Germany a lot of problems.

"On the balance of play, Argentina have had the better chances and the longer it stays like this the more likely it is that Lionel Messi produces that little bit of magic."

Interesting on the replay of the disallowed Argentina goal that coach Alex Sabella saw the offside flag instantly. There was no flicker of celebration from the big man.

Gonzalo Higuain has not had the best 45 minutes. Sergio Aguero time?
