"We've seen that one big chance for Argentina, when Rodrigo Palacio should have scored. Argentina have had the better chances throughout the whole game but you feel there is one more big one in this game. Will it fall to that player who can remain composed and finish?"

Both coaches giving further encouragement, I'm not sure anybody is listening at this stage. They are out on their feet. Argentina haven't been behind for a single minute of this World Cup. How cruel for them if they were to lose it now...

All 36 penalties taken in the 2014 World Cup up until the final, with 26 scored and 10 either missed or saved

The World Cup final could be decided by a penalty shootout. We have had four already.

Is there a perfect penalty? From the graphic, it appears shoot high and into the corners would be the best option.

Germany edge Argentina in penalty shootout stats:

Former England striker Alan Shearer: "You're representing your country and the whole nation is watching you. The pressure is huge.

"Your mind starts to play tricks on you. That walk is a long walk and a million things go through your mind. You heart beats faster but you've got to believe in what you've trained to do.

"The goalkeeper will play mind games, which we saw with Tim Krul. If I'd been in that situation against Krul I'd have waited 10 yards outside the box until he was back on his line - you've got to stay in control of the situation.

"I used to line the ball up, look at the opposite side to where I was going to put it. And you should never, ever change your mind.

"The last thing that goes through your mind? Don't miss."

This has got the distinct whiff of penalties about it now, both sides looking tired and devoid of ideas. It's a shame to end this tournament like this really.

Someone still has time to lift it though.

"It is so tense down there. The substitutes behind the German goal who are supposed to be warming up are just stood watching the game. Julian Draxler could come on for Germany, but then who do you take off? Do you take off a defender and go for it?"

Javier Mascherano cuts the ball out with a great tackle and then catches Bastian Schweinsteiger on his follow through. He's on a booking but no further action taken, or needed.

Germany have one change left. I'd take Mats Hummels off. He's playing like someone's dad.

"There was that opportunity I was talking about. The first touch was brilliant, you're thinking surely now he has to score but in fairness to Manuel Neuer he came out very quickly. I think Rodrigo Palacio was just panicked by that and he scooped it well wide."

Mats Hummels is gone - absolutely gone! He can't run and he can't jump, he gets right under a cross from the left, gets it all wrong to allow Rodrigo Palacio in.

Manuel Neuer is out in a flash though, getting right in the striker's face and forcing him to chip it wide.

Just run at Hummels. The man has lost his legs...
