For three minutes there, Archie Gemmill's stunning goal looked to have put Scotland on their way to a sensational victory. But Rep's goal means Scotland need another two before the final whistle blows.

"We'll support you evermore," sing the Scotland fans. Could that Rep howitzer spell the end of their 1974 World Cup dream? Alan Rough flew through the air like a hairy Scottish missile but he couldn't prevent the thunderbolt from hitting the net, despite getting a mitt to it.

Scotland need two goals again. Can Ally McLeod's men summon up the energy for another sustained assault on the Dutch penalty box? Hartford picks out Dalglish with a lovely lofted ball and there is clear daylight for the Scotland forward some 40 yards from goal but he lacks the pace to get away from Krul and is forced to lay a pass to Souness and a quick exchange between Rioch and Hartford is stopped by a Dutch handball on the edge of the penalty box.

A dagger through the heart of Scotland! With the Scots looking tired and sitting deep, Krul and Johnny Rep simply saunter forward, exchanging passes until the latter absolutely leathers a wonderful shot into the top corner from 25 yards. A hammer blow for the Scots!

"The Dutch are really rocking. The signs have been there for some time; the Dutch are not happy and if the Scots can just keep their heads and discipline... They've got the the neutrals and everybody going for them..."

If Scotland can nab another goal and go on to win the World Cup then the reception at Prestwick when they return will make Elvis Presley's arrival at the Ayrshire airport all those years ago seem like a church picnic.

  16. CLOSE!published at 16:31 British Summer Time 31 May 2014

A close shave for Scotland… Substitute Boskamp swings in an inviting free kick after Buchan is penalised for an over-zealous shoulder charge on Jansen. Rough comes off his line but is swiping at thin air and the ball is headed awkwardly wide by Kennedy. The skipper puffs his cheeks in relief since that only cleared the post by a matter of inches. We're fumbling with the heart pills here...

"A brilliant individual goal from this hard, little professional has put Scotland in dreamland! The miracle is beginning to happen. Scotland need one more to qualify."

Stop the bus! That is simply magnificent… Dalglish is crowded out as he tries to make progress on the right side of the penalty area and Archie Gemmill is there to gather the scraps, gliding past the lunging duo of Jansen and Krul then putting Suurbier on the seat of his pants as he cuts into the box.

Suddenly, the goal opens up and the wee midfielder is a picture of calm as he gently lofts the ball beyond advancing keeper Jongloed and into the far corner. Take a bow wee Archie, one of the great World Cup goals!
