Kenwyne Jones has not always been the most consistent of strikers but he has shown in this opening half an hour that he could be a real handful in the Championship.

There aren't many better celebrations around either...

BBC Sport's Andy Cryer at Ewood Park: "Blackburn manager Gary Bowyer has yet to sit down all game. He is pacing up and down the technical area like an expectant father. As yet though his side are yet to deliver what he wants. Cardiff, despite being depleted defensively, look fairly comfortable and the Ewood faithful are getting a trifle agitated."

  3. YELLOW CARDpublished at 20:17 British Summer Time 8 August 2014

Blackburn's Jason Lowe is the first man into the referee's book as he catches Aron Gunnarsson with a late challenge. A sense of frustration on the pitch and in the stands, with the home fans perhaps a little disappointed with their side's start.

  4. Postpublished at 20:13 British Summer Time 8 August 2014

Chance of a second for Cardiff and for Kenwyne Jones as the burly striker nods on a throw to Nick Maynard, who in turn sends the former Stoke man through. Jones, though, is too quick to take his shot and ends up scuffing a low effort into Paul Robinson's hands.

Blackburn play some lovely stuff going forward but they are not threatening enough in the final third at the moment.

  5. Postpublished at 20:06 British Summer Time 8 August 2014

Grant Hanley almost pokes in a sneaky equaliser with Blackburn's first response as he flicks a loose ball inside the area through a crowd of players towards goal. Cardiff keeper David Marshall is wise to the effort, though, and reaches out to pluck the ball from the air.

BBC Sport's Andy Cryer at Ewood Park: "Stunned silence around Ewood Park apart from the jubilant away corner as Kenwyne Jones heads the visitors ahead and their fans launch into a premature 'we are top of the league' chant.

"Rovers fans though quickly stir and a roar goes up around the home end to get their team up again. They know how important a good start to the season is if Rovers are to remain a club with a feel-good factor about them."

Former Wigan winger Kevin Kilbane on BBC Radio 5 live

"Kenwyne Jones is a player with the ability to score at least 15 times a season for you. He has tremendous aerial ability and you cannot afford to live him unmarked like that. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is delighted."

  8. GOALpublished at 20:02 British Summer Time 8 August 2014

Great start for Cardiff and for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the visitors take the lead courtesy of a thumping header from Kenwyne Jones. Peter Whittingham sends the ball into the area, Mark Hudson heads on towards the far post where Jones gets in ahead of a defender to power in the first Championship goal of the season.

  9. Postpublished at 20:02 British Summer Time 8 August 2014

Jordan Rhodes is not a man you give a sniff of goal and he almost punishes some lazy Cardiff defending as he is afforded space on the edge of the area, allowing him to hit a sweetly-struck effort that dips just over the bar.

  10. GREAT SAVE!published at 20:00 British Summer Time 8 August 2014

Great work from Blackburn's veteran keeper Paul Robinson as he keeps out a header from Kenwyne Jones! Peter Whittingham swings in the corner and Nick Maynard heads it back into the dangerzone for Jones to direct a header goalwards, only for Robinson to scoop the ball over his own bar.

Matt Connolly heads just over from another corner soon after and Blackburn look a little vulnerable from set pieces.

  11. Postpublished at 19:57 British Summer Time 8 August 2014

Blackburn Rovers debutant Alex Baptiste makes himself known with a nasty challenge on Peter Whittingham, sticking his studs right on top of the Cardiff man's foot. The visitors get a free-kick, but Baptiste escapes a booking.

Cardiff's front three of Nicky Maynard, Kenwyne Jones and Adam Le Fondre are yet to really show their hand in these early stages. Le Fondre, in particular, is looking a little uncomfortable wide right. Wasted out there?

All pretty scrappy at the moment as both teams test each other out.

  13. Postpublished at 19:55 British Summer Time 8 August 2014

Former Wigan winger Kevin Kilbane on BBC Radio 5 live

"Every single year this division gets harder. Look at Fulham spending £11m on Ross McCormack. Burnley got promoted last season which was a wonderful story and it gives hope to teams without those big budgets."

  14. Postpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 8 August 2014

Just seen a replay of that handball by Mark Hudson and it was just inside the area. A lucky escape for Cardiff.

Wonder what recently retired referee Howard Webb, who is watching on in the stands, made of that?

  15. Postpublished at 19:48 British Summer Time 8 August 2014

Early free-kick in a promising position for Blackburn as Mark Hudson handles Rudy Gestede's header just outside the area. Tom Cairney takes the set-piece, pretty much dead centre, but smacks the ball straight into the Cardiff wall.

  16. KICK-OFFpublished at 19:46 British Summer Time 8 August 2014

Blackburn Rovers get this game under way and the 2014-15 Football League season is up and running. It feels like football has never been away doesn't it?

  17. Postpublished at 19:45 British Summer Time 8 August 2014

Out come the players to a decent reception from the fans inside the stadium. Lots of the home supporters are waving inflatable zebras, which appears to be related to their main shirt sponsors. A quick group huddle from the players and the first kick of the new season just moments away...

Blackburn manager Gary Bowyer on Radio 5 live: "We have asked the players to focus on what we did well last season. We want to improve and that is the challenge for us all. The season is about continually getting better.

"It's a long season, a tough old division and this season it's the hardest it has ever been. Teams who have come down have spent a lot of money, we are aware of the challenge and we are ready for it.

"It's better than not watching football isn't it?"

Ryan:, external The Championship season won't have any run away leaders like Leicester last season, it'll be very close come 2nd May 2015

Ned Thomas:, external This will be a disaster, or a piece of tactical genius by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Rob of the Robots:, external No defenders on the Blackburn bench is concerning. Tom Cairney is wasted out wide too, but it's early days yet let's see.

Nice use of 'early days yet' Rob. Five minutes before the season has even started...

Former Wigan winger Kevin Kilbane on BBC Radio 5 live

"I played alongside Jordan Rhodes so I know how good he is. He reminds me of John Aldridge. He has great movement and if he gets the ball inside the box he generally scores.

"The one question mark over his future in terms of playing in the Premier League would be his all-round game. Other than scoring, he doesn't offer a lot which may sound odd but at the top level you have to offer more."
