Steven Gerrard has been the fulcrum at Liverpool for over 10 years. But manager Brendan Rodgers has warned his players they must step up when the captain is absent.

The 34-year-old was left on the bench for the second consecutive home game in a frustrating goalless draw against Sunderland at the weekend but starts tonight.

"We can't always rely on him. It can't be up to him every single game to be the catalyst." Rodgers said.

"His talent is world class but that contribution has to come around the team."

Injury-prone forwards, shaky left-backs and ineffective wingers. Some things may never change at Anfield.

Liverpool's side which beat Olympiakos 3-1 10 years ago this week was a strange mix of the bold, the brilliant and the best forgotten. But would they beat the current side?

A decade ago Liverpool needed a home win to sneak into the last 16 of the Champions League.

With nine minutes remaining, the Reds were drawing 1-1 at Anfield with Olympiakos. Needing to score by two clear goals, Neil Mellor's drive gave them hope, before Steven Gerrard's stunning 25-yarder saw them through.

From the brink of elimination, Rafa Benitez's ragtag bunch of young talent, French imports, world-class midfielders and Djimi Traore somehow went on to win the Champions League in Istanbul.

You've seen the goal a thousand times. You've heard Andy Gray combust a thousand times. Gerrard has been asked about it a thousand times.

But 10 years on, he continues to be asked about it. And his side continue to ask him to deliver the goods. Ten years on, they may need another moment from Gerrard as they seek a win against Basel to qualify for the last 16.

    Any chance of a repeat?
