Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "There was great quality on the penalities. Both teams showed great composure. We're pleased to go through after giving away poor goals - lately we've been making too many mistakes.

"I can't fault the character of the players. Congratulations to Middlesbrough, they were excellent. I can see why they are near the top of the Championship. Jordan Rossiter was excellent - he showed great composure for the goal. The finish wasn't easy - he showed great technique.

"It's a very important result. They [the players] want to win in every competition. That adrenalin of winning the game will help the players recover for the weekend derby against Everton."

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman on matchwinner Nathaniel Clyne: "I think he's ready [to play for England]. He has a lot of experience, he is playing very well from the beginning of the season.

"He scored a great goal. I think his performance was very good and I think it's an option for the national coach and I'm very happy to have Clyney in our team because he brings a lot of experience.

"He brings a lot of spirit and I like to have and play with offensive full-backs. He shows that quality and it's very important for the team."

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "We lacked a bit of experience at the back, but overall they did well. We gave a lot and it's frustrating not to be able to score in the second half.

"When you look at the amount of possession we had, we have to give credit to Southampton, they played well and were well organised.

"They abused a bit the fouls in the middle of the park, but they are a good side and they played well tonight. Overall it is frustrating because we gave a lot."

Tonight's 14-13 penalty shoot-out at Liverpool was the longest in the history of the League Cup (previous best 9-8 three times - Arsenal v Rotherham in 2004 and Man City beating Stoke and Aston Villa beating Colchester, both in 1982).

The highest in the FA Cup is Macclesfield beating Forest Green 11-10 in November 2001 in the first round.

However, there was also a 14-13 in the Football League Trophy - August 2011 - Dagenham & Redbridge beating Leyton Orient.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "It was very important to get a result and the players are very happy in the changing room. We're in the hat and that's all we want. This won't affect us for the derby with Everton at the weekend. That's a big game for us, we need to get our league season up and running."

This is not an English record as last year Brockenhurst claimed victory in the Hampshire Senior Cup match 15-14 when Andover's Claudio Herbert missed the 30th penalty, the game having finished 0-0.

Remarkably we have video of that. Take it all in.

Andy via text: What a brilliant penalty shootout! The calmness and composure shown by all players was incredible. Both teams should be congratulated.
