It was a creditable display by the Scots but it was in the final third where they were found wanting.

Plenty of chances but no goals.

The Swedes are on the pitch soaking up the applause from their adoring fans on a lap of honour.

Pia Sundhage's side can start making their travel plans for next year's trip to Canada.

For Scotland, the full focus must now be on the play-offs, which start at the end of October.

It's a disappointing result for Scotland but that can't detract from a great qualifying campaign.

They finish the group stage in second spot and should go into the play-offs full of confidence.

  9. Postpublished at 18:46 British Summer Time 17 September 2014

Frustration is etched all over the face of Kim Little as she earns a free-kick on the right side. That look is more about the score-line than the challenge, though.

Scotland make a change with Megan Sneddon on for Jo Love.

That second goal has taken the wind out of Scottish sails.

Anna Signeul's side have had most of the play in the second half but the hosts have shown why they are so high up the world rankings.

Thoughts must already be turning to the play-offs.

Emma Lundh is sent on for the Swedes, with Kosovare Asllani making way.

  13. GOALpublished at 18:37 British Summer Time 17 September 2014

Sweden soak up the pressure and then break upfield with Lotta Schelin showing great composure to slot the ball low beyond Gemma Fay.

That's pretty much curtains now for Scotland's automatic qualifying hopes.

Scotland are laying siege to the home defence.

Hayley Lauder stings the palms of Hedvig Lindahl with a powerful free-kick and then there are claims for handball in the box as the Scots have a couple of efforts on goal from the corner.

Scotland make a change with Emma Mitchell coming on for Caroline Weir.

Pia Sundhage makes the first change of the game, bringing off Sofia Jakobsson and sending on Lisa Dahlkvist.

  18. CLOSE!published at 18:26 British Summer Time 17 September 2014

Scotland burst forward with Kim Little at the heart of it. She feeds the ball out wide to Jo Love who delivers into the area but Leanne Crichton's header is brilliantly saved by Hedvig Lindahl.

Anna Signeul's charges are getting closer here...

  19. Postpublished at 18:22 British Summer Time 17 September 2014

The Swedes are trying to hold on to possession to take the sting out of what has been a much-improved Scotland attack in the second half.

  20. CLOSE!published at 18:18 British Summer Time 17 September 2014

Kim Little is coming to the fore now. She sells two defenders a dummy on the right flank and races away, earning a corner for her side.

The delivery is excellent but Jenny Beattie's header is cleared off the line by Caroline Seger.
