  1. OUCHpublished at 15:42 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2014

England left-back Demi-Lee Stokes has a pass fizzed at her and she spots the opportunity to flick a ball on to a team-mate.

She does not account for the pace on the ball to her and flicks the ball crisply and probably painfully into her own face.

    Ouch.

"It paid off. That takes a lot of guts to do that. She was just offside. Lianne Sanderson stepped up at the right time. It's very lucky but confident too.

"You've got to make sure everyone is on the same page with that. Luckily they were for England."

  4. DISALLOWED GOALpublished at 15:37 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2014

England boss Mark Sampson may want to work on defending set pieces after this showing.

A Melanie Behringer leaves the Three Lionesses star gazing and Melanie Leupolz powers a header through Karen Bardsley. The offside flag saves the day.

Well done on holding your line England but it feels like a risky ploy.

L Higgins:, external England are far behind the likes of Germany. It's unfortunate but that's the reality that Sampson is facing.

  6. CLOSE!published at 15:32 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2014

This is the closest England have come since hitting the bar in the opening minute but the effort is unconventional to say the least.

Jordan Nobbs - the same player who rattled the woodwork - meets a header 35 yards from goal and German keeper Almuth Schult clasps it but almost carries the ball over the line. It's close enough for slow motion replays to be needed and my word, she diced with death there.

  7. Mustering bluster but Germans not flusteredpublished at 15:30 Greenwich Mean Time 23 November 2014

BBC Sport's Anna Thompson at Wembley: "The England band are geeing up the Wembley crowd and every time England get anywhere near Germany's penalty area, the noise is deafening. But try as they might, England cannot force a decent chance and it remains advantage the European champions."

Bellowing instructions from the touchline, Germany head coach Silvia Neid does not look satisfied.

She has plenty of experience to draw on having taken the helm in 2005, tww years before Germany claimed their last women's World Cup.

The enthusiasm is there from support and England players, of that there can be no doubt. A burst from Lianne Sanderson creates a crossing opportunity and the roar from supporters is electric. Her delivery cannot ignite things further.

England will kick themselves for handing the initiative in the way they have.

    Eniola Aluko, Fara WIlliams

Do not give up hope. Every manager wants to know his side can fire themselves out of trouble and Mark Sampson knows in Eniola Aluko and Fara Williams he has goals in the side.

Williams has 37 for her country and Aluko 30, though it is the latter who proved prolific in qualifying with 13 making her England's stand-out scorer.

If the quickly deteriorating score line was not painful enough, a replay shows the German opening goal does not belong to Simone Laudehr. It's an Alex Scott own goal. Ouch.

Former England forward Sue Smith on BBC Two

"It was a miscommunication between two England players in midfield - then Alex Scott tries to get back and the keeper tries to make herself as big as she could.

"That's a world-class striker, she only had one thing on her mind and that's to put the ball into the back of the net."

England huddle to a team talk, this is going very wrong.

A breakdown in communication on halfway presents Celia Sasic with the ball. She puts her head down, goes on... and on... and on and slips the ball through the dive of Karen Bardsley.

A disaster. England saw the danger at the exact moment it was too late and sliding tackles were redundant.

England respond with backbone and Alex Scott surges down the right to force a corner.

Mark Sampson's side are used to winning and won't go lightly here. Steph Houghton finds space to head at goal but she is offside. A solid response though.

"Alex Scott was marking her and Lianne Sanderson came across to try to help out. I'm not sure if it took a deflection.

"Having seen it again, I think that is an own goal from Alex Scott, unfortunately for her."

This was not in the script but a succession of German corners see England crumble early on and Simone Laudehr, the Frankfurt defender, meets a delivery flush. It's a glancing header but in from the moment it leaves her head. Well guided and with no-one picking up the back post, deadly.

Later replays show England defender Alex Scott got the last touch so it goes down as an own goal.
