  1. Post update

That is where we leave you on another busy day of Premier League football.

Chelsea's Premier League lead has been reduced,QPR are out of the relegation zone, while more pressure is heaped onto Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

Watch Match of the Day on BBC One and online at 22:20 for all the action and join us again for live text commentary of two more top-flight matches on Sunday from 10:00 GMT.

Until then, we bid you farewell. It has been a pleasure.

  2. Manager reaction

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini is also asked whether it was important they showed they could win without Sergio, after the striker limped off with a knee ligament injury early on: "I always say this team is not just Sergio Aguero. We also miss Jovetic and Dzeko was just back and able to play 20-25 minutes. David Silva too, all of them are very important offensive players so I think the way we won today is important for the trust in the defence that we know how to win just 1-0."

  3. Manager reaction

    Man City 1-0 Everton

More from Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini's news conference:

Will Stevan Jovetic be fit to play Roma: "We will see tomorrow. We hope. It is just a small problem with his hamstring."

On the possibility of going to Rome without 5 key players. Biggest challenge as City manager? "Of course to have to play such an important game without such important players is a difficult challenge. But I never complain about injured players. We have a squad and we must try to win on Wednesday to continue in the Champions League."

  4. Real chasing record

Cristiano Ronaldo is on target again as Real Madrid lead Celta Vigo 1-0 in La Liga. They are chasing an 18th straight win, which would equal Barcelona's league-record. You can follow live text commentary here.

  5. Martinez upset with officials

Everton boss Roberto Martinez is now being quizzed in his post match news conference. He is not happy.

No penalty and a stonewall red card for Eliaquim Mangala for his high boot into Samuel Eto'o, according to him. He certainly has a point on that last one.

  7. Newcastle shock Chelsea

In case you missed it earlier, the biggest upset of the day in the Premier League came at Newcastle where Alan Pardew's men ended Chelsea's unbeaten start to the campaign with a 2-1 win.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho had insisted that it was "impossible" to remain unbeaten all season and he was proven right.

What a turnaround for Newcastle as they sit in seventh

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Anon: Apart from the Roma game, if there's a good time for Sergio Aguero to get injured, it's now, with games away to Leicester, home to Crystal Palace, away to West Brom, then home to Burnley and Sunderland. Time for Edin Dzeko to find some form.

That Roma game is quite a biggie though.

  9. Aguero huge doubt for Champions League

Despite Manuel Pellegrini's slight contradiction in the last interview, it would seem as though Sergio Aguero is almost definitely going to be missing Wednesday's must-win Champions League match with Roma. What a blow it would be for City if he doesn't recover from that knee injury. Further assessment tomorrow never sounds good though does it?

  10. Manager reaction

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini, speaking to Sky Sports about Sergio Aguero: "It is not good news, I don't think he will be able to play next week.

"We must wait for the diagnostic, the important thing he will not play against Roma, that is a very important game. We have other players and we will see how it is tomorrow and whether he can play.

"He was more calm [in the dressing room afterwards]. We will see how things are tomorrow but for the moment we are not sure. Edin is not able to play 70-80 minutes, a maximum 30-40 minutes, that is why I made the change I did."

  11. Manager reaction

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini talking to BBC Sport: "We returned to our normal performance. I always said that nobody can win the title in November or December. We have to play seven games in December, so it is a key month and not easy. We shall see in the next four games who is doing better but after that January is also very important.

"James Milner always gives what he has, whether he starts or is a substitute. He gives a lot of character to our team. Big goalkeepers just need to one save, Everton had only one chance and I don't think they deserve to score when they shoot once and Joe made a very good save.

"It is bad news because it is his knee ligament, but we will see tomorrow what the problem is."

    Derby County on the charge

    606 phone-in

    BBC Radio 5 live

Radio 5 live's Darren Fletcher, a Nottingham Forest fan, has thrown down the gauntlet to caller John, a Derby fan, who thinks on current form his side can beat the Premier League leaders Chelsea in their Capital One Cup quarter-final [on Tuesday 16 December]:

"They've got absolutely no chance. If Derby beat Chelsea in the Capital One Cup, I will do 606 from the gantry in a Derby shirt with SAVAGE 8 on the back. If not, John's got to go to work in a Forest shirt."

Derby beat Brighton 3-0 at the iPro Stadium this afternoon.

  13. Manager reaction

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Everton boss Roberto Martinez: "I thought in the first half, if anything, we got a big shock with the decision of awarding the penalty and our confidence was not the same. I think in the second half we were able to relax a little bit, having reset at half time, and we were more ourselves. It made for a very good game of football.

"They had a good opportunity which got a great save out of Tim Howard but then we had a number of good chances. The total danger from then was around Manchester City's box.

"It was a wrong decision. When you see a ball come into the box, James Milner takes the ball away from the direction, there was contact but no contact of trying to make a foul. Football is a contact sport and for that to be a penalty is a big, big difference."

On Ross Barkley: "He lost his balance, he thought a challenge was coming. He tried to get up and fight for the ball. The referee made the wrong assessment. When Ross is on the ball, too many times there is contact but he stays on his feet and he gets punished for that."

  14. Post update

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini tells the BBC, Sergio Aguero has damaged his knee ligaments but is unsure how serious the problem is after the Argentine limped off early.

  17. Opportunity for the Hammers

What an opportunity for West Ham United on Sunday afternoon. The Hammers would move into third with victory at home to Swansea, albeit temporarily ahead of Manchester United and Southampton meeting on Monday.

West Ham in third? Not many would have predicted that in the summer - with the exception of Big Sam of course.

  18. Post update

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Everton boss Roberto Martinez is being interviewed now by the BBC. Anyone get the feeling he won't agree with Manchester City's penalty? We will bring you his quotes.

  19. Player reaction

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Manchester City midfielder James Milner, speaking to Sky Sports: "It is very important but all we can control is what we do on the pitch and not what Chelsea do.

"We need to concentrate on our job, it would have been very easy to slip up after Chelsea's result but you need to win these kind of games to win the title and we ground it out.

"The game against Roma is massive, we need to stay in the Champions League and we can take the momentum from this game and hopefully complete the job."

Ross in Kent: Looks like Jose Mourinho's bus has broken down whilst Manuel Pellegrini's bus is starting to gather some speed.

Darren in Runcorn: Ross Barkley can't hold a place down in the Everton team due to average performances. Clever by Roberto Martinez to let the young man know reputation alone doesn't guarantee a starting place.

Sam in Leicester: Do the Premier League present a yellow cap to Gareth Barry when he gets his next booking?

Barry moved to 99 bookings in the Premier League this evening, the joint most in the Premier League, alongside Lee Bowyer and Kevin Davies.

  21. Post update

It is a little bit surprising to see Everton had 49% of possession. Manchester City did far more with the ball but, out of 19 attempts, only managed three shots on target.

Vladimillion: Man City didn't grind a result out, they got a dodgy decision which decided the game.

Kris Blackburn: Gareth Barry lucky to be on the pitch and Ross Barkley diving for no reason. Everton can have no complaints with the result.

Navneet Gautam: And that's why Jose got rid of them. Poor show from the Everton strikers. Pressure on Chelsea but Jose thrives on pressure.

  24. 'Dogged, determined, disciplined'

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Former Manchester City midfielder Dennis Tueart

    BBC Radio Manchester

"City had to show a different part of their qualities and title-winning credentials this evening. When you lose your main goal-scorer to injury you have to show the whole qualities of the team. To win the league is a marathon not a sprint and City showed they are dogged, have the determination and discipline to challenge."

  25. Post update

    Man City 1-0 Everton

    Chris Bevan

    BBC Sport

"Huge cheers at the final whistle - of relief more than anything else - from the Manchester City fans who had been nervously counting down the final few seconds. Three vital points for the defending champions, who were pushed all the way in the second half by Everton, but the fall-out of this game will be dominated by the seriousness of Sergio Aguero's injury."

  26. Post update

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Job done for Manchester City. They dominated for the majority but, with striker Sergio Aguero limping off early on with an injury, they struggled to find the killer blow. Everton offered little going forward but had it not been for Joe Hart's stunning late save from Romelu Lukaku, they would have nicked a point.

    BBC Radio Manchester

"Great move by Everton, and what a fantastic save from Joe Hart. I think it's the first shot he's had to save today, and even 82 minutes in he's still on his toes, still alive, still alert."

  43. GREAT SAVE!

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Brilliant by Joe Hart. The City goalkeeper has waited 81 minutes before being tested but is alert enough to throw himself to his left and tip Romelu Lukaku's volley wide. That is a reminder of how precarious City's lead is.

  44. Post update

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Former Manchester City midfielder Dennis Tueart

    BBC Radio Manchester

"A draw in this unforgiving title race can be a terrible result, so Manuel Pellegrini has gone to hold on to this win, he's moved to five midfield players with Edin Dzeko holding the line up front. Finishing is his strength, if you give him supply he will get the finish on goal.

"Sometimes you have to win ugly, at this stage of the season you're looking to consolidate going into a big catalogue of games. It's points that matter, not performances."

Terrible finish by Everton's Kevin Mirallas. The ball falls invitingly for the Belgian but his shot would still be rising had it not been stopped by row Z.

  61. Manager reaction

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet: "I think there are times in life when you get opportunities. Today we lost a great opportunity to win at Anfield.

"In terms of defending and keeping a clean sheet we went back to the basics.

"We need to score more goals and be more clinical. The most important thing is to win and at the moment we cannot win too many."

  62. Post update

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Manchester City will be keen to make the most of their continued pressure to get this game done and dusted as quickly as possible. With Roma waiting in the Champions League on Wednesday, how Manuel Pellegrini would love to withdraw some of his key men. Still work to do here though...

  63. Post update

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Former Manchester City midfielder Dennis Tueart

    BBC Radio Manchester

"City have started the second half with the same intensity and great attitude, again attacking down both channels. Gael Clichy and James Milner have both been drilling in crosses hard and low whenever they have got in good positions. There isn't much height up top now for City, and that approach gives Everton's tall central defenders something different to think about."

  64. GREAT SAVE!

    Man City 1-0 Everton

    Jose Angel Pozo

Jose Pozo is so close to his first Premier League goal. The 18-year-old Spaniard, on for the injured Sergio Aguero, drills towards goal from 10 yards after James Milner's pull back but Tim Howard brilliantly keeps the ball out with his feet. Pozo could not do much more there.

  65. Stat attack

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Only against West Ham United (21) have Everton secured more Premier League wins than versus Man City (17).

I can't see Everton adding to that tally the way things are going this evening.

    Chris Bevan at Etihad

    BBC Sport

"Manchester City might be a goal ahead but the conversation of the home fans filing past me on their way to get a half-time cup of tea is, unsurprisingly, all about Sergio Aguero, and how bad his injury might be.

"The last time City had to cope without their inspirational front-man for any length of time was in February this year, when his burst of 10 goals in eight straight games was ended by a hamstring injury ruled him out for the entire month, and they did not do too well without him - winning only two out of five games in that time."

  73. Post update

    Man City 1-0 Everton

    Opta

In case you missed it, Sergio Aguero limped off just minutes into this clash holding his knee and has to be a doubt for Wednesday's Champions League trip to Roma. Eighteen-year-old striker Jose Pozo came on in his place for his third City appearance and, so far, has had little opportunity to impress. Just 10 touches for him so far as shown in touch map above.

  74. Manager reaction

    Stoke 3-2 Arsenal

Stoke manager Mark Hughes: "We put in an outstanding performance. The first half was as good as we've played since I came here. On other occasions we've played well, but not created the chances you need to put away. At 3-0 we were good value for it.

On the disallowed Bojan goal: "I thought the linesman had given it offside. He said the referee gave it and stated Diouf was in front of the keeper's eyeline."

  75. Manager reaction

    Stoke 3-2 Arsenal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger reacting to the first-half display: "Anger doesn't help the team to play well. The players know we missed the start of game. If you come here you have to be on the first ball and have to win the header. We missed the start of the game. We also missed players like Laurent Koscielny - he couldn't play today.

"For Stoke, it's their game of the year. They have more animosity against us than other teams. In the future, we have to be prepared for more commitment. We unlock them by winning challenges and showing it from the start."

Everton had hardly had a sniff as an attacking force, while City give the impression they have another gear to move into yet. The hosts deservedly go in at the break ahead. Everton will have complaints about the penalty decision but Phil Jagielka's challenge on James Milner was pretty clumsy.

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Samir Nasri's right-wing corner is met powerfully by Martin Demichelis but the defender is off radar, quite drastically. The balls flies wide. Wait a minute City fans, Yaya Toure is now down...

  86. CLOSE!

    Man City 1-0 Everton

    Kevin Mirallas

So close for Everton. Kevin Mirallas's volley is heading goal wards but Fernando throws his body at the shot and deflects it wide. At last something for the away fans to cheer.

  87. Post update

    Man City 1-0 Everton

    Opta

Talk about an old-fashioned right winger. Jesus Navas is sticking to the flank in this opening half - as you can see from his touch map above - and is looking dangerous with almost every City attack.

  88. Post update

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Former Manchester City midfielder Dennis Tueart

    BBC Radio Manchester

"Everton have now been asked the question with the early goal, it's no good for them trying to hit City on the counter now, they have to come out and attack."

  89. Post update

    Man City 1-0 Everton

City come forward again. This time the ball falls to Jesus Navas on the edge of the penalty area but he drags horribly wide. There are goals in this for the hosts if they continue like this.

Nick Clohessy: Eliaquim Mangala's studs to the spine, Fernando's kick to the head and Calum Chamber's little tug-back for Arsenal have all received the same punishment.

City's 18-year-old striker Jose Pozo, on for Sergio Aguero, turns smartly inside the penalty area but his shot is blocked. The loose ball falls to Yaya Toure, who also turns on a sixpence, but is eventually crowded out. Everton virtually invisible as an attacking force.

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Former Manchester City midfielder Dennis Tueart

    BBC Radio Manchester

"The penalty decision looked a soft one, James Milner didn't even appeal, he tried to chase the ball after the tackle.

"But it was a lovely penalty, hard and low to the right. Tim Howard is a good shot-stopper so the pressure was on. After Aguero going off, we were looking to see where the goals would come from, and Yaya Toure, as he did last season, is so often the one to count on."

  96. YELLOW CARD

    Man City 1-0 Everton

Another high foot from Manchester City and another yellow for the hosts. This time Fernando's boot hammers Gareth Barry's head. Everton boss Roberto Martinez is furious.

  97. GOAL

Man City 1-0 Everton - Yaya Toure

    Yaya Toure

No mistake from the spot. Yaya Toure confidently steps up and rolls the ball into the corner of the net. Tough for Everton from here.

  98. PENALTY TO MANCHESTER CITY

    Man City 0-0 Everton

James Milner goes down under Phil Jagielka's challenge. The ball isn't touched and he makes contact with the man.

  99. Madness from Mangala

    Man City 0-0 Everton

Former Manchester City midfielder Dennis Tueart

    BBC Radio Manchester

"Eliaquim Mangala was jumping for the ball, his foot was high and it was very uncontrolled. His eyes were on the ball, but that was a real bad one. It was strange, when you jump you don't go with your studs out in front of your body. That will be very uncomfortable for Samuel Eto'o."

    Chris Bevan at Etihad

    BBC Sport

"If you are wondering who Manchester City substitute Jose Pozo is, and who he plays like then maybe his nickname at City's academy, where he was known as 'Mini-Messi' might help.

"That is an awfully big tag for an 18-year-old to have, but his goalscoring for City's youth teams have gained great praise since he joined from Real Madrid in 2012. A first Premier League goal tonight would definitely enhance his reputation."

  101. Post update

    Man City 0-0 Everton

Yaya Toure drags a weak shot well wide from 20 yards. The hosts well on top but little created yet.

  102. YELLOW CARD

    Man City 0-0 Everton

    Samuel Eto'o

A horribly bitty start to proceedings. Now Samuel Eto'o is down holding his back after taking a ridiculously high boot by Eliaquim Mangala. The defender is booked but that could be red. What is he doing with his studs up there?

  103. Manager reaction

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers: "I thought the players gave everything and in the second half we looked like we could make breakthrough. Sunderland proved this year that they are a hard team to beat. I can't fault the players.

"They needed a wee bit of luck and it didn't come. If you can't win it's important you don't lose. We've taken seven points from nine this week which is a good return for us."

    Sergio Aguero

A subdued atmosphere early on at Etihad. Sergio Aguero's early substitution appears to have taken the wind out of the home fans sails. They need something to happen.

  108. Post update

    Man City 0-0 Everton

Former Manchester City midfielder Dennis Tueart

    BBC Radio Manchester

"Sergio Aguero looks a big doubt for the Roma game [on Wednesday] - you could be talking about ligament damage, the way he's holding his left knee.

"Bringing Jose Pozo on is bold, it will be a job and a half for him to try and emulate Aguero, but it was a question of Edin Dzeko's fitness levels, he's been out for three or four weeks. I'll be interested to see who plays the leading man up front - Samir Nasri? Or Pozo on his own?

"There was so much anticipation going into this game after today's results, but all of sudden that is a real kick in the teeth for City, Everton could sense blood."

  118. Manager reaction

    QPR 2-0 Burnley

Burnley manager Sean Dyche, speaking to BBC Sport: "I'm a bit disappointed overall because I thought we produced a good performance. The first goal had a bit of luck from their point of view, the second wasn't so good from our point of view.

"We made chance after chance, particularly in the first half and Rob Green made one outstanding save. It might be up there with save of the season."

  119. KICK-OFF

Man City v Everton (17:30 GMT)

Manchester City were eight points off Premier Leaders Chelsea just a fortnight ago, win tonight and the gap is three. It looks like we have a title race on our hands again. Game on.

  120. Today's results enough motivation for City

Man City v Everton (17:30 GMT)

Former Manchester City midfielder Dennis Tueart

    BBC Radio Manchester

"If Manuel Pellegrini put on his tactics board today's results - Chelsea losing and Arsenal losing, that will be motivation enough for his players to go and get a result tonight.

"The City system looks balanced, Sergio Aguero's up front on his own and I'm still waiting to see who will be the supporting midfield player, Yaya Toure from the middle or Samir Nasir from the wing.

"With Everton playing wing-backs, Man City's wide midfielders will have to be wary of players going forward in that position."

  121. Manager reaction

    Tottenham 0-0 Crystal Palace

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino: "It wasn't an easy game, Palace played well. We are not very fresh because it was the third game in six days and it's difficult to manage.

"Maybe this game is one where we need to get the three points, but in the end I think the result was fair. We have a lack of freshness but we tried, we tried to win the game."

  122. Manager reaction

    Tottenham 0-0 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock: "I'm lost for words. I can't understand how we've not won. The way we played, we deserved the points. The lads played some good stuff and it took a great goalkeeping performance to stop us getting the three points.

"We played some good stuff, created havoc at times and always looked a threat. I don't know how many times I put my head in my hands today as I thought we'd scored that many. Wilfried and Bolaise were brilliant, but my man of the man was Chamakh - he covered every blade of grass."

    Kevin Kilbane

    BBC Radio 5 live

"This season, the Europa League has affected Everton. So many key players for them from last season are missing and they have extra fixtures as well. Lukaku hasn't been doing enough off the ball. He has scored goals but so much of their play comes from him being the link man I don't think he is holding the ball up well. That is where a lot of their attacks are breaking down.

"They have players who can adapt but I think they have been caught on being too elaborate in holding midfielder positions."

    Sergio Aguero

    Sunday Times reporter Jonathan Northcroft:

"Sergio Aguero seems to be getting better,. He is looking like Luis Suarez looked like last season. I know people are comparing him to Alexis Sanchez but his style and ability to be a one-man wrecking crew is doing what Suarez did to defences last season. Aguero blows the cliché away about big man/little man. He likes playing with players who are similar to him.

West Brom manager Alan Irvine speaking to Match of The Day: "It's good that we've stopped the run of defeats.

"If we score the penalty then everything can be so different. There was a big effort from the players. Hull are scrapping at the moment, so we knew it would be difficult.

"It was a blow to miss the penalty after a good start. But, we went on and our players battled very hard, they can be pleased with how they performed today."

  129. Manger reaction

    Hull 0-0 West Brom

Hull City manager Steve Bruce speaking to Match Of The Day: "When you get a point away from home, as we found in midweek, you think it's a good result.

"But, at home, it's disappointing as you really want to do well against the teams around you.

"We found it difficult today, Lescott especially played well for them and we're indebted to our keeper. We didn't quite find that quality that was needed to win a game at this level."

  130. Manager reaction

    Stoke 3-2 Arsenal

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger: "There's a lot of regret, we had given a lot. We showed great energy levels and a a great response. The spirit of the team was fantastic. Defensively we missed start of game. We gave easy goals away. We were not decisive in challenges. Once we were 3-0 down, we had a mountain to climb. We did climb, but a bit unlucky I must say.

"What goes through the mind at half-time? Everybody is down so you have to pump the team up and make decisions to change what can be changed. It's frustrating to see them lose. There were a lot of positives - defensively we were not strong enough."

    Final Score

"To get 3-0 up at home against any team is good, but to do it against at top team like Arsenal? Stoke harassed them, they got stuck in. It should take more than that to knock a team off their stride at this level, but for some reason Arsenal cannot get over the problems they have at Stoke."

  135. Post update

Man City v Everton (17:30 GMT)

    Mangala

Manchester City's £32m defender Eliaquim Mangala has not exactly looked convincing since his arrival in the summer and with City's skipper Vincent Kompany out injured tonight, you could be forgiven for thinking they will struggle to keep Everton's in-form striker Romelu Lukaku in check.

But BBC football pundit Jermaine Jenas thinks the big Belgian is exactly the sort of striker that Mangala likes to play against.

"My biggest issue with Mangala is that he switches off in games and he does not like an elusive striker, the sort who lurks behind him and unsettles him," Jenas explained.

"But he likes to play against powerful strikers who stand up and have a fight with you - the last time he had a scrap on his hands was against Chelsea when he had to deal with Diego Costa and he really stepped up to that."

  136. Scottish Premiership round-up

St Mirren remain locked on the same points as basement club Ross County after their 1-0 defeat by St Johnstone in Paisley. Dundee were left heartbroken at Dens Park as Ryan Christie struck two minutes from full time for the winner for Inverness CT - 2-1 the final score. At Pittodrie, Aberdeen leapfrogged Hamilton with their 3-0 win over the fading Accies, and at Firhill Dan Seaborne's header rescued a point for Partick Thistle against Kilmarnock, who ended a run of five defeats.

  137. Post update

    Stoke 3-2 Arsenal

    Former Tottenham striker Garth Crooks

    Final Score

"Stoke really took the game to Arsenal from the moment the whistle went. They got the early goal and were always in Arsenal's faces. I can imagine Mark Hughes telling his players before the game and half-time: 'Go for them because they do not like it.' If you let Arsenal play, they will destroy you. Stoke did not let them play. Arsenal will compete for that fourth spot, but the fans want to be challenging for the title. If Arsene Wenger sorts out the defence, I think the fans will say fine, but if not, I think the clock is ticking for Wenger."

Mauricio Pochettino has got a lot of work to do though. That team looks fragile to me, they have lots of talented players but they are not a team."

  164. Post update

    Steven Gerrard

"Since Steven Gerrard came on Liverpool have had far more of a threat and have been playing more down the right flank. Jordan Henderson snatched at a shot when he had more time, and Raheem Sterling is coming in to the game a little more. Sterling went down in the box and the crowd was looking for a penalty, but nobody else was."

Sunderland close to nicking the opener on the break. Jordi Gomez's low strike is gathered comfortably by Simon Mignolet.

At the other end, Raheem Sterling goes down under the challenge of Wes Brown in the penalty area but play is waved on. That looked very close to a spot kick.

"He's had a torrid time, Calum Chambers. It's 3-2 and they have a chance to get back in the game, then he has let the team down and got sent off. Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

    Former England captain Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live at Anfield

"What a fabulous run by Raheem Sterling. He must have beaten four players! It was a good save by Costel Pantilimon in the end after the ball went wide to Philipe Coutinho. Connor Wickham has become the target man for Sunderland after Jozy Altidore came off and Lee Cattermole has come on to try and sure up the midfield."

  180. GREAT SAVE!

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

So close for Liverpool. Raheem Sterling's surging run sets up Philippe Coutinho, whose low shot is turned wide. The hosts turning the screw.

  181. Post update

    Hull 0-0 West Brom

Abel Hernandez goes close for Hull once more as he flashes a header wide of the goal after a smart left-foot free-kick in to the area from Tom Huddlestone.

Ben Foster is rooted to the spot as he watches it glide past the post. Steve Bruce makes his final substitution as he brings joint top-scorer Nikita Jelavic off the bench to replace Sone Aluko.

  182. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Tottenham 0-0 Crystal Palace

So close to the breakthrough for Palace there. Yet another Palace corner ends with the ball breaking to substitute Jason Puncheon, who controls before lashing a shot off the bar. Seconds later the winger did get the ball in the net but the offside flag ruled the effort out.

  183. Scottish Premiership latest

Aberdeen are motoring at Pittodrie as they lead Hamilton 3-0. Accies not so long ago were top of the Premiership but they are finding it tough to continue that form. There have been precious few goalmouth chances after the interval at Firhill where Partick Thistle and Kilmarnock are still tied at 1-1, and south of the River Clyde, across in Paisley, Tommy Craig's dismal run as St Mirren manager continues as they trail St Johnstone 1-0. In the only other top-flight match, Dundee and Inverness are drawing 1-1 at Dens Park - Billy McKay cancelling out Greg Stewart's opener.

  184. Austin hero to zero

    QPR 2-0 Burnley

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole

    BBC Final Score

"Once you're in that rich vein of form in front of goal that Charlie Austin is, those finishes become very easy. The jury is still out on QPR, they are still in big trouble. Harry Redknapp says Austin should get 20 goals this season - that's very different to the eight he's on now, so we'll have to wait and see."

  185. RED CARD FOR ARSENAL

Stoke 3-2 Arsenal - Calum Chambers

    Calum Chambers

Another twist in this fascinating fixture as Arsenal are reduced to 10 men, Calum Chambers pulls down Bojan and is shown his second yellow card. Blow for the Gunners, but possibly a boost for Stoke. Can they hold on for victory?

  186. RED CARD FOR QPR

QPR 2-0 Burnley - Charlie Austin

    Charlie Austin

From hero to villain. Seconds after putting QPR 2-0 ahead, Charlie Austin sees red for a second bookable offence. His foul on Michael Keane make it a miserable afternoon for the former Claret.

  187. GOAL

QPR 2-0 Burnley - Charlie Austin (74 mins)

    Charlie Austin

Who else? Former Burnley striker Charlie Austin doubles QPR'S lead to inflict more misery on his old pals. Rangers's top scorer couldn't really miss as he slots home from close range after Mauricio Isla's pull back.

  188. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

Inspired by Steven Gerrard, Liverpool are beginning to come on strong into the last 20 minutes as they see Philippe Coutinho have a shot blocked. Can they get a morale-boosting winner ahead of Tuesday's must-win Champions League test against Basel?

  189. Post update

    Hull 0-0 West Brom

West Brom's Craig Gardner tests the reflexes of Allan McGregor with a free-kick on the edge of the area. McGregor punches his right-foot effort clear and Alan Irvine chooses to bring striker Saido Berahino off the bench to replace Victor Anichebe.

  190. Lifeline for Arsenal

    Stoke 3-2 Arsenal

    Garth Crooks

    BBC Final Score

"It's a long, looping set piece, not the greatest ball in the world, but all the Stoke players just turn and watch the flight of the ball, and Ramsey just volleys it straight in.

"It's been an excellent performance by Stoke, but Arsenal have an abundance of talent, and they have a lifeline here now.

"Aside from the last few minutes it is a game that from start to finish has been a comedy of errors for Arsenal. Young Calum Chambers has had a very difficult time, even in his favoured centre back position. Laurent Koscielny is on the bench, people will ask why. Danny Welbeck also started on the bench. There are some big questions for Arsene Wenger to answer over the coming days."

  191. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace just 20 minutes away from earning what could prove a crucial point in terms of the relegation battle, but Neil Warnock's men will fancy they can win this. The crosses are still flying in from the visitors but they haven't been able to find the finishing touch.

  192. GOAL

The fight back is on! Alexis Sanchez swings in a corner from the right and Aaron Ramsey volleys home through a crowd of players. Stoke are all over the place, Arsenal are flying.

  193. SUBSTITUTION

Brendan Rodgers has had enough as he brings on skipper Steven Gerrard for Adam Lallana. Twenty three minutes for 'Stevie G' to conjure some magic for Liverpool. It has been pretty poor so far.

  194. GOAL

Stoke 3-1 Arsenal - Santi Cazorla, pen (68 mins)

    Santi Cazorla

Santi Cazorla confidently fires home the spot kick and Arsenal reduce the deficit to two goals. Can they get back into this?

    Football League update

There's only one game in League Two because of the FA Cup, but Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's Burton are heading for second spot in the table after Jacob Blyth's goal breaks the deadlock at Exeter.

  197. Post update

    QPR 1-0 Burnley

Entering the last 25 minutes in our games and Burnley are desperately pushing for a leveller. The busy George Boyd fires horribly over for the Clarets. The visitors have done enough to feel they deserve an equaliser but that won't get them any points.

  198. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Crystal Palace

Poor Roberto Soldado. The Spurs striker may have scored the other night but he still looks like a man short on confidence. He flashes well wide from a promising position inside the penalty area.

  199. DISALLOWED GOAL

    Stoke 3-0 Arsenal

    Bojan

Bojan thought he had made it 4-0 with his second of the game - but some time after the ball had been slotted into the net, the referee's assistant ruled out the effort.

  200. Post update

    QPR 1-0 Burnley

Burnley are pressing for the equaliser but QPR are throwing their bodies in the way in a bid to protect their lead. Danny Ings heads over at the far post as his movement continues to provide a threat.

  201. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

    Rickie Lambert and Wes Brown

Chance for Liverpool as they are awarded a free kick on the left edge of the penalty area. Raheem Sterling is cynically stopped by Liam Bridcutt and the former Brighton man is cautioned. Jordan Henderson's delivery is a waste though as the cross flies over.

  202. Post update

    Hull 0-0 West Brom

Ben Foster keeps Hull at bay as Jake Livermore swings a cross into the middle of the area for Stephen Quinn, who flicks a header aimed at the bottom corner but Foster gets across to push the shot away. Best chance of the half.

  203. Austin to the rescue

    QPR 1-0 Burnley

    Garth Crooks

    BBC Final Score

"I still think QPR don't look like a team, they still seem fragile and they need more resilience, you can look to Charlie Austin to dig you out the mire occasionally, but they need more resilience throughout the team.

"But if they can hang on to this, then string some wins together to get to 17 points, it's a big win for them, and it puts a lot of pressure on Sean Dyche's Burnley.

"I'm not surprised Burnley are struggling - teams that do come up start well, it's the euphoria, the freshness of the Premier League, but tiredness sets in - mental fatigue, bodies get exhausted because the tempo and physicality of the Premier League is very tough, you see that even with top class foreign players, who can take a year to adjust."

  204. Post update

    Football League update

It's raining goals at the top of the Championship. The top three have scored 11 between them - and there's still well over half an hour remaining.

Tommy Smith has added another for second-placed Ipswich, who have come from behind to lead Leeds 4-1. Smith headed home Stephen Hunt's cross following a corner. Leaders Derby still boast a three-goal cushion against struggling Brighton, while third-placed Middlesbrough have yet to add to their four first-half goals at Millwall.

Huge news at the bottom of the Championship where Blackpool, who have not won since 3 October, have taken a 56th minute lead through Steve Davies at home to Birmingham.

  205. CLOSE!

    QPR 1-0 Burnley

So close to a Burnley leveller. George Boyd's low strike flashes across goal and is turned wide by Richard Dunne with Danny Ings waiting to prod home at the far post. Inches away.

  206. HITS THE WOODWORK

    Stoke 3-0 Arsenal

Arsenal go so close to pulling a goal back as Alexis Sanchez embarks on a superb run from halfway, brushing off defenders before rounding Asmir Begovic but somehow compounds to shoot against the post.

Do you get the sense this is not meant to be Arsenal's day?

  207. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

    Former England captain Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live at Anfield

"Connor Wickham was under a little bit of pressure from the Liverpool defender but that was the best chance of the game (see 16:11). Running in on his left foot on the angle, he fired across the goal. Sunderland have this scenario weighed up. They are not rushing to take the throw-ins and corners, and are adding more and more tension onto Liverpool and their supporters."

  208. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Crystal Palace

    Federico Fazio

Tottenham are still struggling at White Hart Lane. They can't cope with Palace's pace and skill down the flanks with Wilfried Zaha and Yannick Bolasie tormenting their full backs.

  209. Post update

    Hull 0-0 West Brom

    Liam Rosinior and Andre Wisdom

Sone Aluko is the latest to show a bit more positivity in attack for Hull, but his surging run towards the penalty area finishes limply as he skews a right-foot shot well wide of goal.

  210. Post update

    Stoke 3-0 Arsenal

A bit of a lucky escape for Arsenal as Emiliano Martinez palms an effort straight to the feet of Geoff Cameron, who can't react quickly enough and the ball bounces off his feet and wide.

  211. CLOSE!

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

    Connor Wickham

Best chance of the game as Connor Wickham flashes a left-footed volley wide. Liverpool have to step up here.

  212. GOAL

QPR 1-0 Burnley - Leroy Fer (51 mins)

    Leroy Fer

It isn't the prettiest of goals but the home side won't care. Charlie Austin does brilliantly, combining with Bobby Zamora before slipping the ball inside to Leroy Fer. The midfielder's scuffed effort deflects off Ben Mee and loops into the net. Potentially a big goal at the bottom of the Premier League.

  213. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

    Former England captain Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live at Anfield

"At half-time, Brendan Rodgers will have tried to put more spark into his team. I was expecting something a little bit different from Liverpool in the early stages of this second half, and for them to start pushing Sunderland back. They started well, but both teams are still lacking any real guile in the final third."

  214. Stoke 3-0 Arsenal

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole

    BBC Final Score

"You've got to give credit to Stoke, I watched them in midweek at Manchester United, their fans must have been wondering how they lost that game - David de Gea was forced to make a lot of saves late on.

"Stoke give it their all against whatever team they play against, and Mark Hughes has got them playing good football as well."

  215. Post update

    The FA Cup

Over in the FA Cup second round there have not been many goals, or much sign of an upset, so far.

Yeovil, Tranmere and Preston all find themselves a goal up at half-time, while Cambridge versus Mansfield (currently 1-1) is the only tie in which both teams have found the net.

Games at Bury, MK Dons, Oldham and Sheffield United remain goalless.

  216. Post update

There's been nice build up play from Liverpool but they cannot find the final pass - they need to have more movement off the ball. How long before Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger contemplates throwing on Danny Welbeck? Stoke are well on top at the moment, with their players earning a few 'oles' from the crowd with a spell of one touch passing. Arsenal just can't get the ball at the moment.

  245. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

    Former England captain Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live at Anfield

"After the win away to Leicester in midweek the home crowd were expecting something a little better and of course there is the crucial game against Basel coming up. But clubs like Liverpool should be looking to win all their home games, and that is where the issue lies I think."

  246. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

    Adam Johnson

There is little quality on show at Anfield. Both sides are lacking quality where it matters and, if this continues, surely it won't be long before Steven Gerrard gets the nod from the substitutes bench after the break. Last three minutes of the first half.

    Football League update

Goals are flying in left, right and centre in the Championship. Mick McCarthy's Ipswich have turned it around at home to Leeds. Trailing to Mirco Antenucci's early goal, Daryl Murphy equalised but a penalty by David McGoldrick has put the hosts, second in the table, ahead after Stephen Warnock's foul on Paul Anderson.

Elsewhere, Middlesbrough now lead 3-0 a struggling Millwall, Patrick Bamford and Jelle Vossen with the latest goals.

Fourteen goals so far in the second-tier, with leaders Derby also 3-0 up at home to Brighton, who started the day with one win in 15 league games.

    QPR 0-0 Burnley

Sigh of relief for Burnley boss Sean Dyche as striker Danny Ings starts to move more freely. He will be okay to continue.

  249. Post update

    QPR 0-0 Burnley

Bad news for Burnley fans as striker Danny Ings starts to hobble. He took a real clattering as he collided with the net after a promising run and an injury to him is the last thing the Clarets need.

  250. Post update

    Hull 0-0 West Brom

Still no shot on target from the hosts but Hull are improving as Abel Hernandez heads wide from Ahmed Elmohamady's cross.

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

    Former England captain Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live at Anfield

    Rickie Lambert

"All the excitement we've had here is a few polite rounds of applause, which isn't what you expect from the Anfield crowd. But there hasn't been a lot to enthuse them, not much goalmouth action at all. Liverpool seem to make it to the edge of the area area but then fall down with the final ball."

  252. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

Scrappy stuff at Anfield. Substitute Steven Gerrard has already been warming up on the touchline, giving the fans something to cheer at least. No real chances for either side.

Sunderland's Connor Wickham goes down in the penalty area under Lucas's challenge. Zero contact there though.

  253. GOAL

    Stoke 2-0 Arsenal - Bojan (35 mins)

    Bojan

Stoke double their advantage and, in fairness, they deserve it. Jon Walters crosses from right and Bojan ghosts through a static defence to volley home. After three successive victories, Arsenal need a big response now.

  254. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Crystal Palace

Tottenham are struggling to get into gear at White Hart Lane, but they at last force a couple of chances. First, Christian Eriksen's free kick is easily saved by Julian Speroni, before Roberto Soldado heads tamely over.

  255. Post update

    Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

A big scramble in the Arsenal area as Mame Biram Diouf heads Bojan's free-kick towards goal, but the Stoke striker had just strayed offside.

  256. Post update

    Football League update

Championship leaders Derby County have swept into an early 3-0 lead at home to struggling Brighton thanks to a Chris Martin double and another by Johnny Russell.

Ipswich, who started the day second in the table, fell behind to Mirco Antenucci's effort for Leeds but Daryl Murphy has since equalised for the hosts at Portman Road. Wigan, one win in 14 league games, have fallen behind to Jonathan Howson's goal for Norwich, while Kieran Lee gave Sheffield Wednesday the lead at Blackburn, who started the day unbeaten in nine league games.

Alex Baptiste has levelled for Rovers. Charlton lead at Nottingham Forest thanks to Callum Harriott's goal at Nottingham Forest. Huddersfield lead high-flying Brentford 1-0 following Sean Scannell's effort. Millwall trail at home to Middlesbrough after Jelle Vossen's goal.

  257. CLOSE!

    QPR 0-0 Burnley

At the other end, QPR are almost ahead just seconds later. Eduardo Vargas's shot from the left beats goalkeeper Tom Heaton but strikes Michael Keane on the line and the ball is cleared. So close.

  258. Post update

    Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

Stoke are more than comfortable at the moment against an Arsenal side yet to find their rhythm, and only an excellent block by Mathieu Flamini denies Steven Nzonzi as Stoke again push forward. The visitors need to step up a gear.

  259. GREAT SAVE!

    QPR 0-0 Burnley

What. A. Save. George Boyd's stunning 25-yard strike looks to be heading for the top corner of the net until QPR goalkeeper Rob Green appears from nowhere to tip it onto the post.

  260. GREAT SAVE!

    Tottenham 0-0 Crystal Palace

Palace continue to a press. A corner is whipped in and Scott Dann heads downwards towards goals. The big centre half is denied by a sprawling save from Hugo Lloris.

  261. Post update

    Hull 0-0 West Brom

First attempt on goal for Hull City as David Meyler gains possession just outside the West Brom area and has a pop, but his effort is blocked by Gareth McAuley.

  262. Post update

    QPR 0-0 Burnley

    Karl Henry

Fairly uneventful stuff and little between two sides who came up together last season and are side by side in the bottom three. No chances yet for QPR's Burnley old boy Charlie Austin with the Clarets looking marginally the more threatening.

  263. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

Signs of life from Liverpool. This time Philippe Coutinho cuts inside on the left edge of the penalty area and strikes a low shot into the side netting.

  264. Weight of expectation on Liverpool

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole

    BBC Final Score

"If you look at it from the point of view of last season, I think they may have exceeded expectations last season. They didn't win the league because of the last three or four games. It's been a lot tougher for them this season. They lost Luis Suarez, but they've also lost Daniel Sturridge for a long time through injury."

  265. CLOSE!

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

Better from Liverpool. Adam Lallana twists and turns on the right before whipping in a dangerous cross to the back post. Rickie Lambert climbs well but heads wide. Best chance of the match for the hosts.

  266. CLOSE!

    Tottenham 0-0 Crystal Palace

    Yannick Bolasie and Eric Dier

Skills from Yannick Bolasie. The Crystal Palace winger does some sublime showboating as he turns his man with a deft flick on the left. His pull back is perfect for Joe Ledley just 10 yards out but the former Arsenal man fires over. He has to do better.

  267. Post update

    Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

Chances at both ends as Phil Bardsley has a go from 25 yards, Arsenal keeper Emiliano Martinez fumbles but manages to push the ball away to safety before anyone can sneak in. Moments later, Santi Cazorla drives just wide with an effort from distance.

  268. Manager reaction

    Newcastle 2-1 Chelsea

    Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, speaking to BBC Sport: "My team lost the way I like to lose which is to give everything and being unlucky. Only one team played to win. After the second goal the team lost their emotional balance. A point was the minimum we deserved. There could have been 20 minutes stoppage time but the situation would have been the same because things were happening outside the four lines that the referee couldn't control. The referee can't punish the ball boy who disappeared with the ball, the referee couldn't punish the people in the crowd who kept the ball. I'm not obsessed with records and statistics, that's not for me, I want to win the league."

  269. Manager reaction

    Newcastle 2-1 Chelsea

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew, speaking to BT Sport: "That was about character and discipline against probably best team in Europe at the moment. At the start I thought we stood off Chelsea a bit, but we stuck at it. I've never had six minutes of stoppage time at home before. We've heard of Fergie time but that was about Mourniho time! It's a special day for us. At the end we had players flying in blocking shots and that summed us up. We are in it together and pulling one way. Our tactical plan to stop Chelsea worked quite well. We're delighted to have given a little gee up to the Premier League. I'm sure Jose won't agree."

  270. Post update

    Hull 0-0 West Brom

West Brom are having the better of the early stages of this game and appeal for another penalty when Youssuf Mulumbu's shot possibly strikes the hand of a Hull City player in the home side's area. Nothing given.

  271. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Crystal Palace

Palace's Miles Jedinak has a free-kick from 20 yards, a similar position to where he curled in from against Liverpool. No such luck this time as the wall does its job and the ball is cleared. Palace on top at White Hart Lane.

  272. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

    Former England captain Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live at Anfield

"Sunderland are keeping the ball well and they have had the first shot on target. Liverpool will have worked out that they have a bit of a game on their hands now but I thought they would have started the game a little quicker. They look a bit tentative at the back, there is a little bit of uncertainty there."

  273. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

    Jordi Gomez

First shot of the game at Anfield is driven well, well wide by Sunderland's Jordi Gomez from 20 yards. Not the best of starts.

  274. Post update

    Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

    Peter Crouch

Peter Crouch is within the length of a hair on his head of potentially adding a second as he rises to meet a ball into the box, but can't make the connection he would have hoped for and the ball goes wide.

  275. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

Sunderland look to be growing in confidence at Anfield as both sides struggle to make early chances. Don't forget the Reds are without Steven Gerrard from the start, who is watching from the bench, so how will they fare without him? Time will tell.

  276. Dorrans fluffs his lines

    Hull 0-0 West Brom

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole

    BBC Final Score

"If you're going to take a penalty, take it with a bit of meanness, especially when you're in the position West Brom are at the moment. No one can say it's a poor penalty if you lace it as hard as you can. For me, that was a poor one."

  277. GREAT SAVE!

    QPR 0-0 Burnley

It looks like tricky conditions at QPR this afternoon. The pitch is still white with ice in some places and players are losing their feet. Karl Henry and George Boyd back on after a clash of heads, with the former sporting a bandage around the head.

Burnley almost take the lead as Rob Green fumbles an initial cross but Scott Arfield's rebound effort is well blocked by the QPR keeper. Should score.

  278. CLOSE!

    Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

Arsenal should be level, and it should be Olivier Giroud scoring on his return to the side but he plants a header wide of goal when, you have to say, it was probably easier to score.

  279. MISSED PENALTY

    Hull 0-0 West Brom

    Graham Dorrans

Oh it is saved by Allan McGregor! It is not a great penalty by Graham Dorrans as McGregor guesses the right way.

  280. Post update

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

    Former England captain Jimmy Armfield

BBC Radio 5 live at Anfield

"It's been a bright start. We've already seen good play down the Liverpool right through Glen Johnson. He does have his defensive limitations, but going forward he will go all the way if given the chance. For Sunderland, Connor Wickham has been playing out on the left-hand side. I watched Wickham coming up through youth football and he was always a central striker, but Sunderland have got Jozy Altidore and Steven Fletcher, so Wickham has had to convert."

  281. CLOSE!

    Tottenham 0-0 Crystal Palace

Brilliant skill by Tottenham's Christian Eriksen as he nutmegs Martin Kelly on the left. The Dane cuts inside but shoots into the side netting. Great effort.

  282. Post update

    QPR 0-0 Burnley

End-to-end at Loftus Road. No real chances for either side but a delay in play as Karl Henry and George Boyd receive treatment for a clash of heads.

  283. PENALTY TO WEST BROM

    Hull 0-0 West Brom

Jake Livermore brings down Victor Anichebe inside the area and it is a penalty to West Brom...

  284. Must-win for Rangers

    QPR v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

    Garth Crooks

    BBC Final Score

"QPR can't lose today, because to come back from that could take weeks.

"It takes time for a team to gel, you don't buy players and make a team, I saw that with Tottenham on Wednesday.

"Chelsea are a team, a strong resilient team. I don't see that with QPR. I saw signs of it against Leicester, where they managed to grind out a good result, but I worry about what psychological damage they could suffer if Burnley win today."

  285. Post update

    Tottenham 0-0 Crystal Palace

All quiet at White Hart Lane early on as both sets of players look to get to grips with the game. An early injury scare for Spurs as Eric Dier limps off but he is back on and running freely.

  286. Chambers feeling the heat

    Stoke 1-0 Arsenal

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole

    BBC Final Score

"Calum Chambers is starting to realise what playing week in week out means at a big club. Now he needs to step up, he's at a club that wants to win championships and compete in the Champions League.

"Stoke are prepared to mix it with Arsenal on a physical level. Arsenal play beautiful football, but when it gets physical there are not a lot of Arsenal players who are able to stand up to the challenge."

  287. PENALTY APPEAL

    Liverpool 0-0 Sunderland

Almost an early opportunity for Liverpool as Raheem Sterling races down the left flank. With players waiting for a quality ball in the middle, he fails to deliver and the chance is gone.

At the other end, Sunderland are shouting very loudly for a penalty. Martin Skrtel holds his breath as Connor Wickham goes down under his challenge but play is waved on, probably correctly. Close though.

  288. GOAL

Stoke 1-0 Arsenal - Peter Crouch (1 min)

    Peter Crouch

What a start for Stoke City! Pretty much straight from kick-off Stoke get away down the right and Steven Nzonzi delivers a low cross in the area, which Arsenal fail to deal with, and Peter Crouch bundles home from close range.

  289. KICK-OFF

All five games are go in this afternoon's Premier League matches.

  290. Gerrard on the bench

    Liverpool v Sunderland (15:00 GMT)

Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole

    BBC Final Score

    Steven Gerrard

"You've got to accept that you need to have a rest when you get to a certain age.

"Paul Scholes played for Manchester United right up to his retirement, Ryan Giggs played until he was 40, but he wasn't playing every week, he would have regular spells out of the team.

"To get the best out of Steven Gerrard and the best for Liverpool, he and the fans have to acknowledge he may have to take a rest."

All players in matches this weekend will be posing together with the match officials as part of Football Remembers - a series of programmes and events being delivered jointly by the Premier League, The FA and the Football League, in partnership with the British Council, to commemorate the First World War.

This year, most of the activity centres on one of the most iconic moments of the First World War, the 1914 Christmas Truce football match.

Over the course of 'Football Remembers' week, fans, teams and schools are being asked to upload their own pre-match pictures to this website via social media by using #FootballRemembers.

That wasn't a bad appetiser was it? Now five more Premier League games kicking off at 15:00 GMT before Manchester City's late match against Everton.

  293. Post update

Tottenham v Crystal Palace (15:00 GMT)

    BBC Radio 5 live

Sunday Times reporter Jonathan Northcroft on Crystal Palace's search for a striker: "The strikers that keep teams up don't need to score that many, maybe four or five goals will keep them up. It is about scoring key goals and getting that type of right player in January. Maybe experienced strikers on loan will be the best option but they are all competing for the same players. Maybe Robbie Keane or Jermaine Defoe?"

  294. Post update

    QPR v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

QPR boss Harry Redknapp: "Burnley finished miles above us in the Championship last season. Both of us have the nucleus of the same sides so we know it will be a tough game."

  295. Player reaction

    Newcastle 2-1 Chelsea

Newcastle goalkeeper Jak Alnwick on BT Sport: "I was a little bit nervous but it was slightly easier coming on at half-time because I didn't have time to think about it too much. It was a great experience for me and I'm just happy to get the victory. Everyone backed me and showed me great support, the gaffer, the backroom staff, everyone."

  296. Player reaction

    Newcastle 2-1 Chelsea

Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse on BT Sport: "I didn't play very well but scored two goals and that is important. The team played very well and stayed together. As the gaffer says if we play all the game together, you have a great chance to win the game. I do my job and if on the bench I wait for my chance. I am so happy."

  297. League Two preview

    Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink
Image caption: Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was named the new Burton manager on 13 November

In the one and only game in League One and Two - as a result of it being FA Cup second-round weekend - Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's Burton could join Wycombe at the top of League Two if they win at Exeter.

The Grecians are a point outside the play-off places and could look to ex-Republic of Ireland striker Clinton Morrison, 35, to make his mark, after he signed for the club last week.

  298. Championship preview

    Darren Bent
Image caption: Darren Bent - on loan from Aston Villa - scored against Fulham last week

Top-of-the-table Derby will be looking to bounce back from a slightly surprising 2-0 defeat against Leeds with victory at home to struggling Brighton. The Seagulls are in the bottom three and manager Sami Hyypia will be hoping on-loan striker Darren Bent can add to his tally having scored on his debut last week.

Any one of the four teams below the Rams could usurp them at the top. Ipswich host Leeds, Brentford are at Huddersfield, Bournemouth are away to Wolves and Middlesbrough are at Millwall. At the other end, Blackpool - 10 points adrift of safety - entertain Birmingham.

  299. Post update

Well what way to start today's football action. It is only the start though, with five Premier League games coming up at 15:00 GMT and Championship and League Two action.

James Porter: That lad Jak Alnwick should be man of the match, he should be starting after that inspired performance.

Things have totally turned around here. I was here when Newcastle lost 3-0 to Sunderland last year and the atmosphere was awful. Alan Pardew and his players have shown character in abundance. "The way Newcastle fought, not just for their manager but for the team is very commendable.

"Jose Mourinho has looked anxious throughout, the longer the game has gone on, the more anxious he's looked.

  305. FULL-TIME

West Brom manager Alan Irvine makes four changes to the side which lost at home to West Ham on Tuesday. Central defensive pairing Gareth McAuley and Sebastien Pocognoli replace Craig Dawson and Chris Baird.

Youssouf Mulumbu comes in for captain Chris Brunt who has a hamstring injury while James Morrison makes up a five-man midfield as striker Saido Berahinho drops to the bench.

    Stoke v Arsenal (15:00 GMT)

    Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson

    Football Focus

Stoke lost 1-0 to Liverpool last Saturday and 2-1 to Manchester United in midweek, but Lawro doesn't see their mini-slump in form continuing for much longer:

"They're in the middle of a tough run, when you look at fixtures, they were unlucky against Liverpool last week and could have easily got a point at Man United on Tuesday, they could have got something from both of those games.

"Stoke are one of those teams, when you look at the start of the season, who you think will be absolutely fine. They're not going to be relegated, and for a club with that size budget, they've done really well."

    Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson

"The way Alexis Sanchez has settled in at Arsenal is an absolute bonus, because you never know with the language barrier. If you look at his build, he is as strong as an ox. Compare him to the build of Mesut Ozil, who has the body of an office worker, and maybe that is the difference in how well they have settled in the Premier League."

There have been too many coming in without any pressure, and now Didier Drogba is on alongside Diego Costa there is an added threat. Newcastle have to have a threat of their own too. Against Chelsea they started well but, when things went wrong, they collapsed. I wonder if so many players coming in at the same time means they don't feel the same responsibility and don't feel as attached to the club. It does seem to spoil the mentality of the team."

He replaced a very good goalkeeper in Reina, the fans loved him, and Liverpool don't have the greatest number two goalkeeper in Brad Jones. There is not much scope in taking Mignolet out of the team. Not good news for Newcastle if goalkeeper Rob Elliot fails to re-emerge in the second half after limping off at half-time. With Tim Krul also injured, the man who would have to step in is academy keeper Jak Alnwick.

Hull City v West Brom (15:00 GMT)

    Alistair Mann

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"Situated precariously immediately above the bottom three, there's an increasing uneasiness among the fans of both Hull City and West Bromwich Albion.

"While statistics can sometimes be misleading, those regarding the two clubs are difficult to view positively - the Tigers have secured just one win in their last 13 games, the Baggies only one in eight.

"It's now 16 years since all three promoted teams were immediately relegated back to the second tier, and with QPR and Burnley in particular now building some momentum, it can only serve to increase the anxiety for the likes of Hull and West Brom."

  368. Post update

    Liverpool v Sunderland (15:00 GMT)

    Jonathan Pearce

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"Liverpool look capable of scoring a few on current form as they look for a third win on the spin for the first time this season.

"Sunderland's defence was run ragged by Manchester City in the week after it was so solid against Chelsea. Ageing defenders couldn't cope with two tough games in a week - and here's a third tough task ahead of them.

"It's 31 years since Sunderland won at Anfield. I can't see that miserable drought ending.

"If Sunderland are as stubborn as they were against Chelsea , and bearing in mind Liverpool's creative limitations at home this season at times, this will be a tricky afternoon for the Reds."

  369. Post update

    QPR v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

    John Motson

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"QPR manager Harry Redknapp has aptly described this match as "a real six-pointer", their second in a row at Loftus Road. I can't imagine this will be a five-goal thriller like last weekend's win over Leicester but, if anyone is going to score, you would bet on it being Charlie Austin or Danny Ings.

"Burnley have improved, there's no doubt about that. Eight points from four matches is a sound statement by a team perhaps now attuned to the demands of the Premier League.

"Notwithstanding QPR's good home form and Burnley's improvement, it looks like it will be a real struggle all season for both clubs. If either were given the option now of survival on the last day of the season, I would think they would take that."

  370. Post update

Tottenham v Crystal Palace (15:00 GMT)

    Alan Green

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"I've witnessed two of Tottenham's last three league games and each time I've left the ground wondering if the coach was still trying to work out what represented his best team. Mind you, they won both those games.

"Despite Palace's rabid inconsistency - they beat Liverpool, drew at Swansea and then managed to lose at home to Villa in midweek - Warnock's team have scratched their way out of the bottom three.

"No one, least of all Warnock himself, will pretend that it will take anything other than a gargantuan effort to avoid relegation, as it did last season, but I just like their gritty, determined approach. They are perfectly capable of causing upsets."

  371. Post update

    Stoke v Arsenal (15:00 GMT)

    Steve Bower

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"Arsenal's reaction since defeat by Manchester United has been encouraging, with their three wins accompanied by three clean sheets - an area they had to improve.

"They know those standards have to be maintained as they head to the Britannia Stadium, where they've often had uncomfortable times in recent years, with just one win in their last eight visits.

"Stoke boss Mark Hughes has been disappointed with his side's home form so far: seven points from 18 and three defeats already, the same total as all of last season.

"They've been unlucky in their last two matches at Anfield and Old Trafford and now face Arsenal and Chelsea in their next two home games in a testing period."

Chelsea finally get their foot on the ball and press forward for one last opportunity before the break. Another opportunity for Newcastle, whose confidence is growing so much that Paul Dummett decides to get in on the attacking action and have a wander forward. 377. Post update

If I was Alan Pardew, I'd be pretty happy with how things have panned out so far. Newcastle are causing Chelsea one or two problems when a Blues player is in possession, often causing them to lose the ball.

I don't buy into the fact the Chelsea players don't know they could make history today. Who is he trying to kid? He is a great manager but he can sometimes be a bit arrogant and he alienates himself from the people who want to listen to what he has to say.

"Chelsea are flying high at the top of the table but Newcastle have been on a good run. It should make for a great game today."

  397. 'Football Remembers'

    Newcastle v Chelsea (12:45 GMT)

Newcastle and Chelsea players are currently having a mixed team photo, with all 22 players posing together with the match officials. That will be the same for all the matches taking place this weekend, with the pictures uploaded to a special website.

It is all part of Football Remembers - a series of programmes and events being delivered jointly by the Premier League, The FA and the Football League, in partnership with the British Council, to commemorate the First World War.

This year, most of the activity centres on one of the most iconic moments of the First World War, the 1914 Christmas Truce football match.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew tells BT Sport: "I'm pleased today as our captain Fabricio Coloccini is back. Two guys who were suspended in midweek also return and we are a lot stronger today.

"Ayoze Perez gives us something different up front to Papiss Cisse which I hope will be a problem for Chelsea. The most important thing is to keep ourselves in check as if you over expose against Chelsea they will punish you."

  401. Mourinho Newcastle manager?

    Newcastle v Chelsea (12:45 GMT)

    Jose Mourinho

If things had worked out differently over a decade ago, Newcastle fans could well have been cheering Jose Mourinho's name this afternoon.

Bobby Robson, Newcastle boss from 1999-2004, wanted Mourinho as his assistant back in 2000, with the aim of him eventually taking over as manager.

"Since Bobby suspected I wouldn't accept it, he told me it would only be for a year, two tops, and that at the end of that time I would be head coach and he club manager," Mourinho wrote in his biography. "But I didn't take him up on his offer, knowing sooner or later, my time would come."

    Newcastle v Chelsea (12:45 GMT)

    Jose Mourinho

Chelsea can extend their unbeaten run to a club record 24 games if they avoid defeat at Newcastle today.

As it stands, they have not lost a competitive match in 219 days. Apparently, you could travel the 40 million miles or so to Mars in that time, as well as grow the perfect apple.

Those are just a couple of things BBC Newsbeat has found you could do in the time since Chelsea last lost. Read more on the Newsbeat website.

  408. The magic of the FA Cup

We've been treated to a decent sprinkling of FA Cup magic already this season with Warrington beating Exeter in front of BBC cameras in the first round and Blyth Spartans doing the same last night as they defeated Hartlepool 2-1.

    Newcastle v Chelsea (12:45 GMT)

    Guy Mowbray

BBC Match of the Day commentator

"Just how do Newcastle go about trying to halt the Chelsea charge?

"Sunderland's 'contain and counter' approach worked a week ago, but there's something in the Newcastle DNA that says they can't play that way - even if most supporters would gladly take a draw now.

"Chelsea make a quick return to the North East on the brink of two club records. Avoiding defeat would mean new bests of 15 league games unbeaten from a season's start, and 24 competitive matches without losing any.

"Looking from the outside, a home win looks the most unlikely of the three possible outcomes, but there are some Chelsea fans viewing the game with a minor degree of trepidation."

  410. "I'd love it if we beat them. Love it"

    Newcastle v Chelsea (12:45 GMT)

    Kevin Keegan

Going back to Jose Mourinho's earlier comments [12:06 GMT], they are reminiscent of the time when former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson suggested back in the 1995-96 season that other teams might not try as hard against Newcastle as against his side.

That prompted a famous rant in response from then Newcastle boss Kevin Keegan, who said: "I'd love it if we beat them. Love it."

Alan Pardew was considerably calmer in his response, telling BT Sport: "Jose Mourinho never says anything with a reason. I'm guessing he is trying to rile us up and hope we will love our discipline, but I don't think that will happen today."

Will, Southampton: I remember the last game at the Dell. Jubilant scenes followed Matt Le Tissier's late, wondrous winner as we defeated an impressive Arsenal side 3-2. Predictably there was a pitch invasion and I made a beeline straight for the dugout. Another supporter had arrived first and crudely stowed the extra-time minute indicator up his shirt. He sheepishly escaped from the ground but was eventually accosted by security outside. He was standing in the parking lot, holding the board aloft and playing with its functions!

"I am sure Steve will be getting it in the ear from him on a daily basis. He is the one of the best at getting the most out of his players but his signings are just not showing at the moment."

  423. Under pressure

There are a few top-flight bosses feeling the heat at the moment and West Brom boss Alan Irvine is one of them.

His side lost 2-1 to West Ham on Tuesday and, even though they might have been a bit unlucky, Irvine was never a popular choice when he took over in the summer and some of the Baggies faithful have started to boing boing on his back.

Irvine badly needs a win at Hull today in one of a number of key games taking place this weekend between some of the teams battling relegation. QPR boss Harry Redknapp's side play fellow strugglers Burnley, while Leicester boss Nigel Pearson's team face Aston Villa on Sunday.

  426. Talking of sackings

Hartlepool United have sacked manager Paul Murray and assistant Willie Donachie.

The decision follows last night's 2-1 home defeat to Northern Premier League Blyth Spartans in the FA Cup second round.

Sam Collins has been placed in temporary charge of first team affairs.

  427. Top-flight lack of sackings

    Tony Pulis

We've reached the first week of December and a Premier League manager has yet to be sacked.

However, BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage does not expect that situation to last and one of the main reasons is the availability of Tony Pulis, who impressively kept Crystal Palace up last season.

"Forget unhappy fans, player power or impatient owners - there is one big reason why managers of teams at the bottom of the table are at risk, and his name is Tony Pulis," says Savage.

"It is not his fault, but all the chairmen and owners out there will see what Pulis did at Crystal Palace last season, when he came in and kept the Eagles up, and think 'he saved them, and he can save us'."

  436. It's NOT time to part-eh

    QPR v Burnley (15:00 GMT)

    QPR boss Harry Redknapp

As mentioned earlier, Manchester United may have had their Christmas party but one manager not getting involved in the festive spirit is QPR boss Harry Redknapp.

Not so 'Appy 'Arry says his side, who face fellow bottom three side Burnley today, need to concentrate on avoiding relegation rather than having a party.

"No, I'm not into Christmas parties, not for footballers," he explains. "I think it's more aggravation than it's worth. It's a changing world out there and there's always someone out there with a camera on their phone."

"I haven't spoken to them (the players) about it, they haven't mentioned anything about a Christmas party.

"I think they understand the pitfalls of going out. You've only got to be closing your eyes and someone has got a picture of you making it look like you're drunk. It's not worth the hassle."

    Newspaper round-up

    Independent

The Independent looks at the predicament of QPR, Burnley and Leicester, who were promoted last season but currently lie in the top-flight's bottom three ahead of today's games.

Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood, remember him, has also been giving his views on there being a "fear" at picking young players.

"Youth development is something I feel passionate about but the power to make the big change is in the hands of the clubs," Sherwood tells in the Independent.

"They scout, train and develop the boys on a day-to-day basis and, ultimately, it is they who either pick the players in the first team or not.

"I fear that at some clubs there is a climate of fear around the selection of young players. Obviously, it starts with the manager, who is working on such a short-term basis that he is afraid to select those young academy players because he feels pressure to win games immediately, in order to keep his job."

  440. What was the Christmas Truce?

During the first Christmas of the First World War, both sides on the Western Front agreed to put down their weapons in what became known as the Christmas Truce.

On Christmas Day, a football match was played between German and British troops on the front line and this was started by a British soldier kicking a football out of his trench. The Germans then joined in. It was reported that Germany won the match 3-2.

No guns were fired on Christmas Day 1914 and at midnight, in one part of the trenches, a flare was lit to tell soldiers it was time for them to return to fighting. The truce went on until the New Year in other parts of the Western Front.

Chelsea can set a new club record of 24 matches unbeaten in all competitions by avoiding defeat against Newcastle at St James' Park.

The Blues, though, have lost their previous two matches at Newcastle and, when asked about setting such a record, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho doesn't seem to bothered.

Sunday Times reporter Jonathan Northcroft: "It can be like school where Mourinho enjoys the pain of the boy at the front of the class. What can you do? Mourinho likes to put out a message. He wants to portray himself as an underdog and wants to stir competition up and that irritates him. He is looking for conflict and irritation.

"It probably doesn't sit well with him being so dominant. I think he is bored of the Arsenal invincible. He isn't Arsene Wenger's biggest fan and if the biggest prize can be matching Arsene Wenger that isn't going to float his boat."

  448. Stopping Chelsea

    Newspaper round-up

    Daily Mirror

Former Liverpool striker and manager Kenny Dalglish has been talking about how to stop Chelsea, who take on Newcastle at 12:45 GMT today.

Dalglish's answer - well, it doesn't appear that it's possible.

"Chelsea are running away with the Premier League at the moment and the truth is that there is no easy way to stop them," he says in his Daily Mirror column.

"I hear people saying that Newcastle will go negative against them at St James' Park on Saturday in a bid to frustrate them.

"Well, good luck with that because the problem with trying to stop all great sides is that the threat comes from so many different areas."

  450. Money, money, money

Man Utd v Southampton (Mon - 20:00 GMT)

Money apparently makes the world go round and Manchester United seem to have plenty of it to splash out in their bid to return former glories to the club.

They spent an eye-watering £150m last summer and conservative estimates have earmarked manager Louis Van Gaal with having £100m more at his disposal, while some forecasts have that figure at £200m. Whatever the figure, simply, it's a lot.

The Old Trafford outfit do not seem to be messing about. You might wonder about Financial Fair Play but because Manchester United bring in so much commercially they are in a position of strength. Those who argue FFP makes the bigger clubs stronger might have a point.

  451. Two-horse race

    Newspaper round-up

Talking of Blyth Spartans making the headlines what better way to seamlessly move into looking at what's the newspapers are saying. As we do that, we'll also be taking a more in depth look at today's games and checking out the big stories doing the rounds.

    Guardian

We start with the Guardian, who ask whether the Premier League title race has become a two-horse race between current leaders Chelsea and champions Manchester City.

They also have an interview with former Chelsea striker and new Burton Albion manager Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink. He has played down his playing career, instead preferring to concentrate conversation on his managerial performance.

He said: "We don't have to talk about when I was a player. I have to earn my right as a manager."

  452. Blyth Spartans joy

    FA Cup

Blyth Spartans duo Jarrett Rivers and Stephen Turnbull

Their name sounds like something from ancient Greek mythology but they are a team in Northumberland and have made the headlines by creating a FA Cup upset.

The non-league outfit are through to the third round of the competition after knocking out League Two side Hartlepool 2-1.

An Andrea Pirlo-style free-kick from Stephen Turnbull and a winner from Jarrett Rivers, who works in his mother's newsagent when he's not playing footie, helped Blyth to a famous win.

And, while there is a busy day of Premier League football, there are also nine second round FA Cup ties on the BBC. You can follow audio and text coverage here now as the minnows try to follow Blyth and set up third round matches with the Premier League giants.

  453. Danny Baker Show

As has become the way for Saturday mornings, we have teamed up with the Danny Baker Show to get your thoughts on a particular subject.

    Danny Baker

Today we want your stories about family football memorabilia you have. Have you got grandad's or grandma's medal/shirt/boots. If so, how come?

Tell Danny, and us, by using #bbcfootball on Twitter or via text on 81111 if your hilarious story needs telling in more than 140 characters. You can also listen to The Danny Baker Show by hitting the live coverage tab at the top of the page.

  454. Thrills and spills

There are seven, yes I say seven, top-flight games for your delectation today as it's that time of the year when the games come thick and fast.

Top-flight leaders Chelsea get proceedings underway at Newcastle at 12:45 GMT before the sandwich filler of five 15:00 GMT games, including a 'six-pointer' between QPR and Burnley as well as Hull and West Brom. There is also the not so small matter of Liverpool v Sunderland, Stoke v Arsenal and Tottenham v Crystal Palace.

There's also plenty of FA Cup action to keep you entertained and the 2015 Fifa Women's World Cup draw.

If that's not enough for you, we end the day with reigning champions Manchester City hosting Everton at 17:30 GMT. Strap yourselves in people, it's going to get kinda hectic.

  455. It's time to part-eh

    Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney

It's Christmas party season and footballers have a history of the odd faux pas when it comes to getting involved in their club's festivities.

The worst it has got so far is Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney taking to the stage and crooning away. (I don't know if he was any good but I haven't seen any stories of Simon Cowell beating down his door to sign him up).

Others are likely to be ironing their Superman/Spiderman/Batman/Ironman/Hulk etc. costumes for the ready but before that we'll find out who today's superheroes and villains are in another Premier League Saturday instalment. Welcome.
