Another win for the visitors tonight would lift them six points clear of Motherwell in the battle to avoid a tense play-off against Hibernian, Rangers or Queen of the South from the Championship. I know Falkirk can still reach fourth in the second tier but that seems even more unlikely than St Mirren beating the drop.

Back in January when Stephen Mallan's late finish gave 10-man St Mirren a 2-1 win at Victoria Park, County dropped to the bottom of the table by three points. A few weeks later, a 4-0 loss at Pittodrie meant the Staggies were six points adrift.

I'm not sure what boss Jim McIntyre has been putting in the tea since then but the turnaround has been astonishing, with 22 points picked up from a possible 24!

Ross County chairman Roy MacGregor on BBC Radio Scotland

"I think we just found our spirit again. The management team have got that back and the fans have been great in that too.

"But we start with 34 points with six games to go, so we are still in the mix.

"We have been running on one-year contracts since we came up and, if we stay up, we need to take a longer-term view.

"Third season in, with no right for a club with our population to be here, but if you have good leadership, good vision and good fans, you can stay here."

St Mirren chairman Stewart Gilmour on BBC Radio Scotland

"It's up to us to give a far better performance than we did last week, especially for the supporters.

"I'm sure that's exactly what Gary has told the boys. It's not over until the fat lady sings, as they say.

"What's disappointing is some of the negativity, which is just horrific. Negativity is killing Scottish football. The only thing people want to talk about is bad news.

"We've admitted we made a mistake in our managerial appointment at the start of the season. I still think we've made far more right decisions than wrong ones.

"Some of the criticism has been a bit personal, which is extremely disappointing.

"All the guys in our boardroom are St Mirren fans, I can assure you and every single one of them is hurting at the moment."

That mauling at Fir Park was just the latest of a series of disappointments for celebrity Buddies like Dougie Vipond, Chic Young, Christopher Brookmyre and the guy from Pie & Bovril.

Home matches in particular have been a continuing source of misery since the black and whites have managed six wins all season and just one of those has come at St Mirren Park.

An eighth loss in nine games would mean St Mirren are destined to finish in the bottom two since they are currently 13 points behind County in 10th place, with just the post-split fixtures to come. Motherwell, in the play-off place, are 10 points better off, having crushed the Paisley side 5-0 last week.

Gary Teale has been in charge of the home side since Tommy Craig was sacked in early December and the former Scotland winger was given a deal until the end of the season in late January.

Sir Alex Ferguson transformed St Mirren during a four-year spell in the 1970s and has time on his hands these days but even the great man might struggle with this task.

"We're still in there fighting and stranger things have happened. It's down to personal responsibility, we need to win our individual battles.

"The players need to go out and use every ounce of energy they have.

"In life, it's always nice to prove people wrong and hopefully we can do that."

  12. Postpublished at 19:23 British Summer Time 13 April 2015

Ross County manager Jim McIntyre on BBC Radio Scotland

"We're nowhere near safe, even if we win tonight. When it comes to the split, anything can happen.

"We've been taking it one game at a time and just trying to climb the league. Scoring first helps and continuity of selection helps.

"Every time we've faced St Mirren, we've been in a game and I expect that again. The players will be hurting and they'll want to show that they care."

The bad news for the Buddies is that they are up against the Premiership's form side. The Staggies are simply red hot as they look to extend an eight-game unbeaten run that includes seven victories.

Good evening and welcome to our Scottish Premiership coverage. If St Mirren are to perform a miraculous escape from relegation after nine years in the top flight, the fight back really needs to start at home to Ross County.
