Kris Commons pivots on his right foot to power a left-foot shot low at the United goal but the home keeper is down quickly to smother it. United are not finished in this game, though. Their appetite for attack is far from sated.

Stefan Johansen clips in the type of cross you dream about - using the outside of his left boot from the right touchline - and it lands on the bonce of the on-rushing Kris Commons who got in ahead of Ryan McGowan to power a header towards the top corner of the net. However, there was Radoslaw Cierzniak to leap to save Celtic going two ahead.

Stuart Armstrong works the ball across to Scott Brown on the edge of the United box and the Celtic captain lays the ball off to Stefan Johansen who, showing the touch and vision that has won admirers this season, rolls the ball to Leigh Griffiths on the right side of the box and he arrows a shot across Radoslaw Cierzniak and into the net at the Shed End.

"I thought Dundee United got a lot of good blocks in. Celtic have got in down the left a few times but down the right they haven't done anything. (Full-back) Adam Matthews has been up the pitch maybe only once. Celtic's passing was poor. The groundsmen are watering the pitch now so the ball should move around better. Celtic's tempo and movement has to increase."

Well, no goals in the opening 45 minutes but there was entertainment aplenty, albeit seldom resulting in a shot on goal. The best moment of the half was Robbie Muirhead's cracking shot that was tipped over by Celtic goalie Craig Gordon.

Chris Erskine tries his best to get clear of the green and white hoops and has the scent of goal but Virgil van Dijk gallops in to take the ball of his toe. That's a few times in this match that the Dutchman has been able to recover a situation thanks to his pace.

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths and United goalkeeper Radoslaw Cierzniak compete for a long ball forward. Griffiths clipped the Pole's foot after the goalie had cleared the ball but all ended amicably.

Blair Spittal and Paul Dixon tear Celtic apart down the left and win a corner, but the visitors clear and break swiftly to win a corner at the other end. Stuart Armstrong sends in the delivery for Celtic and United hoof it clear all the way to Craig Gordon at the other end.

Scott Brown is booked by Willie Collum for a meaty challenge on John Rankin, the Celtic captain's 12th booking of the season. He'll be hoping he doesn't get a baker's dozen today. He slid in and with studs up got the ball away from the United midfielder but also sent Rankin spinning into the air.

Robbie Muirhead is showing an admirable level of enthusiasm, skill and aggression to trouble the visitors' defence. For Celtic, poor Jason Denayer's head will be birlin' as, first, he is lobbed in the box by young Muirhead and, as the ball rolls out of the Celtic penalty box, the Belgian takes a thumping shot to the temple. Ouch.

Radoslaw Cierzniak slides to his left to turn Kris Commons' deflected shot round the post for a Celtic corner, John Souttar doing enough to take the sting out of the Celtic attacker's dig at goal. United defend stoutly from the corner and in the next move the United keeper gratefully clutches a snap side-footed shot by Virgil van Dijk. It's a decent game, this.

United are in fifth place in the Premiership table. They have struggled since losing Gary Mackay-Steven and Stuart Armstrong to Celtic but need to find form very soon to catch third-placed Caley Thistle and St Johnstone who are six points and two points ahead respectively. Inverness have played one game more than Jackie McNamara's side while the Perth Saints have played two games more than United.

It's imperative that we pass the ball. We have five players out so it gives the younger ones a chance. Robbie Muirhead has the ability to cause defences problems. I don't think there will be many surprises with both teams. Maybe it's a measure of success if we are meeting them seven times in a season. Credit to St Johnstone - they had a great result yesterday. We have games in our own hands to close the gap (on Inverness and St Johnstone)."

Midfielders Stefan Johansen and Kris Commons and right-back Adam Matthews return to the Celtic side. James Forrest, Gary Mackay-Steven and Efe Ambrose drop to the bench for the seventh meeting between the clubs this season.
With Nadir Ciftci suspended and Calum Butcher and Mario Bilate injured, United also show three changes with striker Robbie Muirhead making his first start since signing from Kilmarnock in February while midfielders John Rankin and Blair Spittal return.
