Real had 29 shots on goal. 29!
For my money Valencia more than deserved their point though - they should be safe to take fourth and a place in next year's Champions League, with Sevilla now four points behind.
Barcelona can wrap the title up in Madrid next weekend - away to Atletico, in a mirror image of last year, when Atletico were crowned champions at the Nou Camp.
A brilliant match for the neutral too Ben.
How many times did Real hit the woodwork? Seven or so? And when they weren't busy conspiring to hit the post or bar Diego Alves was finding ways to save his Valencia team with some brilliant saves - not least from Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty.
Factor in the injury to Toni Kroos and it has been a very rough night for Carlo Ancelotti's side.
Ben Ramage: Valencia I could kiss you! Best game of the season so far, could have been 5-5. La Liga is Barca's!

Real are still to play Espanyol and Getafe, while Barca have got the tougher run-in - Atletico Madrid and Deportivo.
But one win from those two games will see Luis Enrique's side crowned champions. That really should be that and the Real players seem to know it as they salute the home crowd.
No league title for them since 2012...
And that is that.
Barca go four points clear, with two games left.
Ay ay ay!
Pepe gets his head to it, Diego Alves spoons up onto the bar, the crowd is willing the ball in but it's all in vain - the referee had blown up for a foul anyway.
The last minute. Real force two corners, Marcelo works space and shoots but it's blocked.
Asier Illaramendi then buys a free-kick in dangerous territory. Last chance saloon...
Valencia break but again Alvaro Negredo doesn't have the quality required at the vital moment.
Time is running out for Real. Barcelona can go out and get their Cava if it stays like this...
Sofiane Feghoulioi jinks past Marcelo with a stepover, nutmegs Isco... it's pretty but Real win it back, James Rodriguez lines up a shot on the edge of the box but its well blocked...
Real look to break down the right but Dani Parejo says no - and goes in the book for a cynical foul.
From a Real corner Pepe nods a header at the far post - it's wide and he is angry.
There are FIVE minutes to play, stoppage time. Here we go...
... foul in the box though. Real have the free-kick and Valencia waste a bit more time with their final change.
Pablo Piatti is off, Lucas Orban on.
Valencia haven't give up hope of the three points yet though - a win would see them sitting comfortably in fourth place. They force a corner...
... but it's deflected wide for a corner. James Rodriguez plays it too deep but Real are building from the back, roared on by the home support.
One more goal! Three minutes plus stoppage time to find it.
Free-kick Real.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale discuss, and Ronaldo plants the ball down in dangerous range....
There was only one way to get past Diego Alves tonight and Isco knew it.
That's set us up nicely for a five-minute grandstand finish. One goal and Real are right back in the title race.
That is more like it! Isco finds the net with a curled effort from outside the box. Real could have done with that about 20 minutes ago though - surely there's no time?
Alvaro Negredo again - where is his finishing today? The Manchester City striker, on loan at Valencia, heads wide as Real are let off the hook for an umpteeth time.
Down the other end Javier Hernandez ain't gonna beat Diego Alves with that - a tame effort straight at the keeper, who has been brilliant tonight.
They may be taking their time with it but all of this is deserved - Valencia are piling on the pressure and force another corner, Jose Luis Gaya again firing wildly on goal as the move breaks down.
It's back with Real but they've lost all of their zip. Sergio Ramos gives the ball away in midfield and Alvaro Negredo lunges at the ball on the edge of the box. It's well over but could have been so much worse.
