Race for the Champions League

I hope that was enough excitement for you.

In Italy, we had one team go down to nine men for 25 minutes and bring on a keeper who saved a penalty with his first touch. In the end they were undone by a brace from former player Hernanes, who celebrated both goals exuberantly.

And over in France, two goals in the last 12 minutes saw Marseille go from out of the Champions League race to only two points behind Monaco with two games left.

I had wondered if I'd overhyped this live text as 'race for the Champions League' but in the end it was a thrilling evening.

FULL-TIME

Steve Mandanda recovers and boots the ball long from his free-kick. It's over - Marseille close the gap to two points in the bid for the final Champions League spot.

Monaco have a chance but Wallace can't get onto it and keeper Steve Mandanda holds onto the ball. The Brazilian caught the keeper, who is now getting treatment. Marseille defender Nicolas N'Koulou also got injured there. We're past the four minutes.

Michy Batshuayi has a chance to seal this now for Marseille but drags his shot wide. Seconds left.

Full-time in Vigo. Sevilla are three points off fourth-placed Valencia with two games left (and a worse head-to-head).

As things stand Marseille are two points behind Monaco with two games left in the battle for the final Champions League spot. A few minutes ago they were going to be eight adrift and out of the mix.

Oh Marseille have wasted a huge chance here. They break and Florian Thauvin, on the halfway line, plays it out left to Romain Alessandrini, who is in acres of space. Alessandrini tries to find Thauvin, who is in front of goal, but overhits the cross.

Cometh the hour, cometh the laid-back Bulgarian. Dimitar Berbatov comes on for Anthony Martial up front for Monaco. About six minutes left.

Three minutes to go. And Sevilla's Champions League hopes are in real trouble if they don't win. They would be three points behind Valencia with two games left - and with a worse head-to-head record.

Oh hello, this one isn't done yet and Marseille keep their slim Champions League hopes alive thanks to Andre Ayew's header from six yards out. They have 11 minutes for a winner that would see them close the gap on third-placed Monaco to two points.

Monaco still lead Champions League rivals Marseille 1-0, with Sevilla being held 1-1 by Celta Vigo.

What does that do for the table? Well Lazio remain third in the table, one point below Roma and three above Napoli. Seventh-placed Inter are now two points of the Europa League spots.

In Portugal, FC Porto are on the verge of clinching their place in the Champions League group stages. They lead Gil Vicente 1-0 with about 15 minutes left; Jackson Martinez the scorer.

They will be three points off leaders Benfica with two games left.

In news which could affect a couple of our teams today, Uefa restricted the size of a few teams' squads for next season's European competitions.

Seven teams have received that punishment after breaking Financial Fair Play rules.

Monaco, Roma, Besiktas, Krasnodar, Lokomotiv Moscow and Sporting Lisbon can only name 22 players in next season's Champions League or Europa League squads.

Inter Milan, if they qualify for the Europa League, have been capped at 21.

About six minutes until half-time, it's settled down a bit now at the Olympic Stadium in Rome.

It's a ridiculously entertaining game now, Rodrigo Palacio forces a save from Federico Marchetti. Action-packed doesn't do it justice. Which will explain the low frequency of updates from Vigo and Marseille so far!

Boos ring out around the stadium as Inter striker Mauro Icardi gets the ball. They think he went down easily for Mauricio's red card. He did that waving an imaginary card that winds up some people afterwards.

A hideous miss from Inter forward Mauro Icardi. Hernanes, the former Lazio midfielder, gets into a good position and plays a perfect ball through to his team-mate. Icardi controls it, takes aim and fires well over the bar. Should have been 1-1.

Lazio break from the back as Felipe Anderson charges forward into Inter's half. Danilo D'Ambrosio fouls him to stop him breaking away and gets a booking.

Monaco have had a remarkable turnaround during the season to stand on the brink of the Champions League. Marseille have had a similarly dramatic collapse.

After 17 games Marseille led the league and sat 12 points above seventh-placed Monaco. But since then Monaco - who reached this season's quarter-finalists - have been the in-form team in the French league.

Marseille, on the other hand, are only four points above relegation form in that time.

Lazio have had a pretty decent season; they are in the Coppa Italia final next month (against Juventus) and are chasing a first Champions League place since 2007-08. They finished ninth last season and did not qualify for Europe at all.

Inter Milan are eighth, one position above where they were when Roberto Mancini took over in November. They still have an outside shot of qualifying for next season's Europa League.

Spanish La Liga

Spain's La Liga is the same as the English Premier League - top three reach the Champions League group stages, while fourth place goes into the play-off.

Sevilla are four points behind fourth-placed Valencia (who drew with Real Madrid yesterday). Presuming the Spanish league finishes (more on that here) they are running out of games to reach the top four.

The Spanish league comes down to head to head, not goal difference, and Valencia edge them on that so they need to pick up more points than their rivals.

French Ligue 1

In France, the top three qualify, with the top two going straight to the group stages. Paris St-Germain, who only need a point to wrap up the league, and Lyon are already qualified.

So the battle for the third and final spot comes down to Monaco, St Etienne and Marseille. If Marseille lose to Monaco tonight they will be out of the equation.

I mean technically Bordeaux can still qualify but it would take a set of results that merit need a Uefa investigation.

Italian Serie A

In Italy, the top two teams progress to the Champions League group stages, with third place reaching the play-off.

Lazio don't know whether to look up or down in the table. With four games left they are three points above Rafael Benitez's Napoli in fourth. But win or draw tonight against Inter Milan and they overtake arch-rivals Roma into second place.

It goes down to head to head instead of goal difference if teams are level. Napoli beat Lazio 1-0 earlier this season, and their next meeting? On the final day.

But tonight is about who will qualify for the lucrative European Cup.

We will bring you the latest from Italy, France and Spain in the battle to reach next season's tournament - and earn loads of lovely euro.

No, it's not the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Or the Petrofac Training Cup.

It is, of course, the Champions League.
