Aleksandar Mitrovic gets a talking to from the referee Mike Jones but, to be fair to the striker, he has shown more fire in his brief cameo than most of his team-mates did in the whole match.

Some relief for Newcastle as Swansea boss Garry Monk decides to bring the menacing Jefferson Montero off. The winger gets an even bigger ovation than Andre Ayew as he goes off and Wayne Routledge comes on.

I can't imagine the Newcastle players or fans are having too much fun at the Liberty Stadium. If there's a team you do not want to be down to 10 men against, then Swansea would be right up there. 

It's now a damage limitation exercise for the visitors.

Swansea winger Jefferson Montero - yes, him again - is the provider as the Ecuadorian crosses for Andre Ayew to head in his second goal of the season. I'm not sure there's any way back for Newcastle from this judging on events so far.

Swansea are denied by the woodwork for a second time. Gylfi Sigurdsson curls a left-foot shot at Newcastle's goal and his effort comes off the underside of the crossbar before bouncing away.

To say it's been Swansea's half would be an understatement. Bafetimbi Gomis put them ahead before Newcastle had Daryl Janmaat sent off for persistently fouling Jefferson Montero, who hit the post with a shot.

This has been coming. Newcastle right-back Daryl Janmaat loses possession to Jefferson Montero and pulls the winger back to foul the Swansea player for a fourth time in the game. Referee Mike Jones gives Janmaat a second yellow and bring an early end to the Magpies defender's afternoon. 

Newcastle offer a rare threat going forward. Gabriel Obertan runs on to a pass to the inside right of the box and sends in a low cross for striker Papiss Cisse. Swansea defender Federico Fernandez intercepts but gets caught by Cisse in the process.

Shelvey impressed in the opening 2-2 draw at Chelsea, and he has controlled the opening 20 minutes against Newcastle. 

"It was his delightful through ball which set Bafetimbi Gomis on his way for Swansea's goal, and his crisp passing has allowed Swansea to dictate the pace of this game. The one negative? Shelvey is one of eight players sporting garish lime green boots."

Newcastle have their first effort in anger. Gabriel Oberton powers in a low shot which Swansea keeper Lukasz Fabianski pushes round the post for a corner.

Newcastle's promising start

Newcastle head coach Steve McClaren's first game in charge of the club ended with an entertaining 2-2 draw against Southampton on then first weekend of top-flight action and he has not ruled out any more new arrivals.

"There's still a long way to go in terms of settling everybody down. There are a few who have been left out who are obviously not happy - and that's normal - and a few who have a bit to prove," he said.

 "Pre-season, the first game, another week's training - we are getting towards what we want to move on with, and still with two weeks to go, things will happen in the window. 

 "We will wait and see."

Swansea provided one of the surprises of the opening round of the Premier League season last weekend when they came back from a goal down twice to draw at champions Chelsea.

Blues boss Jose Mourinho's criticism of Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro has since grabbed the headlines and Swans boss Garry Monk believes that has denied his side the credit they deserved for the result.

"It's [Swansea's performance] been overshadowed. The media's focused on the wrong thing," said Monk.

"They should have focused on what a good performance my players put in."
