So Southampton are all but there, but West Ham have it all to do.

Tonight's victory was Southampton's first European win for 34 years - since beating Limerick in September 1981. 

Vitesse boss  Peter Bosz is asked if Southampton's 3-0 win kills the tie.

"Yeah," he replies."The 3-0 defeat was unnecessary," he adds. "Today the details were not in our favour."

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman: "There is a big difference between 2-0 up and 3-0 up and tonight is a great result in European football. We were playing too much back in the second half and there was too much controlling of the game without the movement that we had earlier.

"We did a good job today and that makes things a little easier inthe next game. 

"We try to have a good squad in terms of quality as well as numbers. Ideally we would have two more players to have a perfect squad for this season. 

"Expectation will be big for us, but we are realistic people at the club and it will be difficult for us to match what we did last season, But we believe we can and we have the players to do that."

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic: We definitely played well in the first hour, but the game lasts 90 minutes and we had to react better to going down to ten men."

But Sampdoria have suffered a 4-0 humbling at home to Serbian side FK Vojvodina.

A very satisfactory night's work and the 30,000 plus in attendance, apart perhaps from the 1,500 Dutch fans, enjoyed it. Actually they seem to have had quite a good time as well and are cheering their players as they cross the pitch to applaud the travelling contingent.

It appears that West Ham boss Slaven Bilic was sent to the stands at the tail-end of the Hammers' draw.

Things were getting very fraught down at pitchside and the Croat was not shy in letting the referee and opposition know what he thought.

"The Vitesse fans are really going for it in the away end at St Mary's.
