PENALTY APPEAL

Huge shout for a Southampton penalty as Graziano Pelle tangles with Philipp Wollscheid, but Lee Mason isn't interested. The replay shows that Wollscheid took legs Pelle's legs from under as he went up to win the ball in the air. That is a clear penalty - Southampton can feel very aggrieved.

Two great chances for Stoke. Charlie Adam fires over after good hold-up play by Jon Walters, then Ibrahim Afellay blazes inches wide with an angled drive.

YELLOW CARD

James Ward-Prowse catches Charlie Adam and goes into the book.

That's a big miss. With Southampton over-committed up the field, Stoke break quickly and Glen Johnson picks out Marko Arnautovic with a great through ball. The Austrian has the goal at his mercy but fires wastefully over.

SUBSTITUTION

James Ward-Prowse, who scored for England under-21s in midweek, replaces Steven Davis.

Sadio Mane shows a neat bit of trickery to work space for a shot 25 yards out, but it's comfortably dealt with Jack Butland.

PENALTY APPEAL

Shane Long bursts into the penalty and tumbles to the deck under the challenge of Philipp Wollscheid. Is that a penalty? No says Lee Mason.

On the replay, it does seem to be a case of shoulder to shoulder.

Ronald Koeman decides to inject the pace of Sadio Mane into proceedings. Jordy Clasie is off for Southampton.

Stoke make a change of their own - Xherdan Shaqiri, who has had a difficult day, is replaced by Ibrahim Afellay.

That's poor from Bojan. Stoke have a real chance to launch a break and earn their defenders a breather, but Bojan misplaces a simple pass to Xherdan Shaqiri and Southampton are able to stream forward again. The passage of play ends with Victor Wanyama firing a shot wide.

Stoke are penned in their own half at the moment. Shaqiri desperately hooks the ball upfield, but there's no-one there in black. Stoke haven't conceded an away goal since September 12, but it's all hands to the pump at the moment.

This is much better from Southampton, they're playing with real intensity now, hussling Stoke in mistakes. Shane Long wins two corners in rapid succession, but on both occasions Dusan Tadic's delivery is poor.

Decent chance for Southampton. The ball drops for Dusan Tadic, but he can only fire horribly wide. Tadic eventually recovers the ball on the left wing and jinks inside nicely, but can only chip his pass into the gloves of Jack Butland.

Xherdan Shaqiri's left peg is having an off day. The ball falls nicely for him 25 yards out but he can only zip his drive five yards wide of the upright. Poor.

What a chance. What a chance. Marko Arnautovic does brilliantly to bulldoze his way down the left, get his head and pick out Xherdan Shaqiri, running onto the ball in a central position 12 yards, but the Swiss blazes wastefully over. Wake-up call for Southampton.

...Stoke would move up two places to 10th in the Premier League table, and Southampton would drop one spot to 8th. Long way to go though...

Penetrating Pieters

So, one goal separates the sides at half-time, and here it is - in diagram form. It was a patient, passing move from Stoke, but the real killer was Eric Pieters' cross from the left - a brilliant whipped delivery that took the Southampton centre-backs out of play.

In fact, Pieters has been the star player of the half - he's found the mark with every one of his 15 passes, including six in the Southampton half.

HALF-TIME

Ref Lee Mason blows for the interval. Stoke were the better side for the first half an hour, but Southampton bossed the final 15 minutes. Good game, plenty of quality on show from both sides.

Oof, that's a nasty one. Cedric goes up for the ball with Bojan, and comes down with blood pouring from his head. On closer inspection, there was a stray arm - Bojan perhaps a lucky boy there.

Southampton try a nice routine from a corner, but Cedric fluffs the final line when he fires the ball miles over the top from 20 yards.

Southampton are coming into it here. Stoke over-commit from a corner, and Southampton clear and launch a swift breakout. Dusan Tadic carries the ball all the way from the halfway line to the penalty area - he has Shane Long in support, but chooses to go it alone and fires over.

Goodness me that was dicey! Jack Butland has won plenty of admirers this season but he almost makes an almighty howler here, dropping a floaty free kick right on the toes of Victor Wanyama. The Southampton man can't adjust in time and prods wide.

Southampton try a different tack. Virgil van Dijk swings a big long ball forward from the back, Shane Long gets up high and wins the flick-on, but Graziano Pelle can't quite latch on. A moment later, Steven Davis sees a shot blocked inside the area.

Southampton's Jordy Clasie tries a spectacular effort when a corner is headed out to him on the edge of the area, but he sends his volley rolling lamely wide.

Lovely, intricate interplay between Marko Arnautovic and Bojan in the left-hand corner completely befuddles Southampton's defenders and allows the Austrian to drive to the bye-line unopposed. He has all the time in the world to pick out a team-mate, but his cut-back is errant and Southampton clear. Stoke very much on top though.

Marko Arnautovic is sporting his signature top-knot today, a look that wouldn't be out of place in the coffee-shops of east London. He wins a corner, but Bojan's delivery is headed away.

Jose Fonte gets his head to Steven Davis's curling free kick, but he can't get over the top of it and the ball loops over.

A bit of a scramble in the Stoke area as a good ball in from the left finds Graziano Pelle in the six-yard box, but he can't quite make a clean connection. Erik Pieters eventually hacks clear.

And that's another lovely counter from Stoke! Lovely interplay between Bojan and Xherdan Shaqiri down the right releases the Swiss into the penalty area, and Maarten Stekelenburg has to be get down smartly to stop his shot. Real warning signs for Southampton here.

That, by the way, was Bojan's third league goal of the season, making him their equal top scorer in the top flight. Stoke still looking dangerous on the counter - Marko Arnautovic is picked out by Jonathan Walters' through ball and Cedric has to be alert to block his shot.

Southampton immediately stream forward in search of an equaliser, but Cedric's shot from the edge of the box comfortably clears the bar.

But Bojan's second effort on goal is much more telling! Erik Pieters is allowed to measure a superb curling cross from the left and Bojan gets in front of his marker and beats Maarten Stekelenburg with a lovely, impudent flick off the outside of his boot. What a breakthrough for the visitors.

Marko Arnautovic tries to slip Charlie Adam into the penalty with a cute little through ball, but it's blocked off. The ball comes to Bojan, whose low drive is comfortably held by Maarten Stekelenburg.

In fact the new ball is almost immediately in the net! Pinball in the Stoke area, the visitors don't clear their lines and Dusan Tadic is inches away from finding the corner of the net with a drive across goal.

An early substitution. It's not one of the players though - it's the ball, which turns out to be flat. Maybe a new one will lead to a bit more excitement.

A very quiet start at St Mary's, with both teams struggling to get into their usual passing rhythm. Glen Johnson knocks a long ball straight to the goalkeeper, then Graziano Pelle surrenders possession for Southampton.

It's Southampton who have made the better start to this season, sitting comfortably in seventh, while Stoke are 12th. But a win for the Potters today will see them close the gap on their South Coast rivals to just one point.
