Florence will be, to nick a line from pop king Prince, partying like 1999 tonight. That's because Fiorentina are top of the Serie A table for the first time since the heady days of Gabriel Batistuta, Rui Costa and Francesco Toldo.

Indeed it is all over in the San Siro. A stunned silence from the Milan crowd, save for whoops of delight from the Fiorentina camp.

Fiorentina substitute Matias Fernandez isn't finished yet - he wants a slice of the scoring pie. The Chilean wriggles into the Inter box but cannot pick out a white-shirted team-mate. And that should be about that.

INJURY TIME

Unfortunately for Inter, there are a further two minutes of pain to endure.

Inter Milan have a brief touch of the ball, before Fiorentina quickly snaffle possession back. Heading towards injury-time - if the referee has a heart then he will blow up after 90 minutes.

Inter are barely having a kick as Fiorentina patiently run down the clock. Pass, pass, pass. Then La Viola spring forward, Marcos Alonso again bursting down the left. But the ex-Bolton man's drilled cross is cut out by the Inter defence.

Nikola Kalinic is still not content with his night's work. The Fiorentina hat-trick hero wriggles into space inside the right channel of the home box and his low cross-cum-shot is hacked clear by an Inter defender.

SUBSTITUTION

Inter Milan's midfield will be glad to see the back of Milan Badelj's shirt. The Fiorentina midfielder has been excellent tonight and is given a breather by La Viola boss Paulo Sousa.

That's it. No goals, little entertainment and honours even. This one won't live long in the memory as the Basque derby ends all-square for the fourth successive fixture. Both sides climb a place in the table, La Real to 12th, Athletic to 17th.

Fiorentina substitute Nenad Tomovic has slotted in on the right flank where Jakub Blaszczykowski occupied, but any thoughts that he might sit a little deeper swiftly disappear. The Serbian gallops into some open space, cracking a low shot that Inter keeper Samir Handanovic easily collects.

Carlos Vela is denied in a huge goalmouth scramble as Athletic just about smuggle the ball to safety to escape as La Real push for a late winner.

Time for a Fiorentina change. Poland midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski, a summer signing from Dortmund, is replaced by defender Nenad Tomovic. La Viola shutting up shop.

Great build-up play from Real Sociedad, but it's not matched by the finish as Imanol Agirretxe sends a tame header straight at the keeper from an Xavi Prieto cross.

That Inter Milan goal came from absolutely nowhere. And it has allowed the San Siro fans to finally have something to shout about. However, Fiorentina are being sensible again, trying to kill off Inter by diligently keeping possession and ruining any momentum they might have.

The comeback for 10-man Inter is ON! OK, OK, I might be getting too excited. But at least they are giving themselves a chance. An inswinging free-kick from Alex Telles is met by the head of skipper Mauro Icardi, whose effort hits the left-hand post before falling nicely at the Argentine's feet to bundle in.

Into the last 15 minutes, and unless someone goes against type in this tense encounter, it's going to be the first stalemate between these sides for 16 years.

Fiorentina continue to toy with Inter at the moment. Midfield pair Milan Badelj and Matias Vecino are dictating play, lots of short, sharp passing in central midfield. Inter can't lay their hands on a white shirt at the moment.

SUBSTITUTION

Spain Under-21 forward Inaki Williams comes on for Athletic, in place of Sabin Merino. David Moyes responds with two substitutions of his own for La Real.

The sadistic part of me wanted to see Fiorentina really stick their foot on Inter's throats here. But they're kinder than me. La Viola continue to neatly ping the ball around, Inter struggling to get a foot on it for a sustained period. Little happening at the moment.

Fiorentina boss Paulo Sousa is looking like a genius here in Serie A. What do you make of that Swansea/QPR/Leicester fans? His team are using their extra man wisely, knocking the ball around in midfield, stretching the depleted Inter side.

Geronimo Rulli spreads himself to block with his legs after Athletic's Aritz Aduriz beats La Real's offside trap to shoot from inside the area.

No sign of early encouragement for Inter. Fiorentina quickly get into their stride after the restart, Milan Badelj plays a neat one-two before firing low at goal from 20 yards. This time Samir Handanovic manages to make the ball stick to his gloves.

Midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia - Inter's record signing - is the man hooked, with defender Andrea Ranocchia trotting on. Inter could do with bringing on a brick wall as a half-time sub.

In case you are just joining us (where have you been) - you won't believe what is going on at the San Siro. Leaders Inter, who won their opening five matches and conceded just once, have been torn apart by a fearless Fiorentina side.

Paulo Sousa's side are set to go top of Serie A if this stays like it is.

We're back underway in San Sebastian. Can David Moyes improve on his woeful derby record? He's tasted victory just five times in 34 attempts when local pride is on the line. 

YELLOW CARD

Oooh, this is nasty. Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin goes over the top of Borja Valero's foot as the pair contest a loose ball in midfield. Guarin escapes with a yellow card.

The chances are arriving for Fiorentina more frequently than trains arrive on the Milan Metro. Spanish midfielder Borja Valero is allowed time and space to wander in from the right flank, but wildly shoots from distance. That was high and wide.

Brief respite for Inter - and only because Fiorentina keeper Ciprian Tatarusanu is nicking a line out of the Samir Handanovic comedy routine. Tatarusanu raises a laugh among the Inter fans when he shanks a backpass towards his own goal, the Romanian keeper glad to see the ball spin the other side of his post.

Inter boss Roberto Mancini stands all alone on the San Siro touchline, staring blankly at the pitch. Wonder what is going through his mind? He chomps furiously on his chewing gum, presumably in a bid to reduce some of the anger bubbling around his body.

Lots of effort, but precious little quality. The last three Basque derbies have finished all-square, and this one is heading that way too.

RED CARD - Miranda (Inter)

Nightmare. Absolute nightmare. Inter Milan's evening goes from bad to cold sweats in the night. Brazil centre-back Miranda cleans out Nikola Kalinic as he steams through on goal. Inter are sliced open by one long ball from back. Miranda has to be sent off - and he is.

Inter look ragged. Blue and black shirts are scattered all over the pitch like washing that has blown off the line. Fiorentina tear them apart again through Josip Ilicic, before a scrambling tackle from Guy Medel - right inside his penalty area - saves the day.

Even his bright purple tie ends up slung over his right shoulder. Then the Portuguese boss realises he needs to stay calm and instructs his players to do the same.

Asier Illarramendi, already on a yellow card, escapes with a handball in the area as the Real Sociedad defender blocks a shot from Aritz Aduriz with a raised arm.

La Real's Inigo Martinez and Athletic's Aritz Aduriz both left in a heap after a full-blooded 50-50. The first-half summed up in a challenge. Bags of commitment on both sides, but not much else at present.

Remarkable scenes at the San Siro. The league leaders are being obliterated by surprise package Fiorentina. Former Blackburn striker Nikola Kalinic does the damage again, sliding in ex-Bolton winger Marcos Alonso's beautiful delivery from the left. Made in Lancashire that one.

Oh my word - Fiorentina have only gone and doubled their lead. Josip Ilicic - La Viola's opening scorer - cracks a beauty of a 25-yarder towards the Inter top corner, forcing Samir Handanovic into a spectacular save. But wait! It isn't a save, the Slovenian does not manage to tip the ball over the bar, allowing the quick-thinking Nikola Kalinic to nip in and poke over the line.

Inter do venture forward to force a corner. A Fiorentina head flicks the ball on at the near post, but the away side manage to scramble clear before an offside flag is raised when the ball comes back in.

Carlos Vela might be in need of an ice pack at the break. The Real Sociedad midfielder is being singled out for some special treatment from Athletic whenever he's on the ball.

Fiorentina knocking the ball about very crisply from the back - just how Paulo Sousa told us that he wanted his new side to play. No threat from Inter.

Inter's frustrations are already becoming apparent. Midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia looks flustered as he is crossed down in central midfield, wafting his arms at Milan Badelj like a kid trying to squat a pesky fly. The Fiorentina man drops to the ground, but the ref doesn't appear to think that there was too much malice in the tussle.

No strong response from Inter Milan yet. Fiorentina looking very comfortable, almost creating another opportunity for themselves. Milan Badelj breaks up play in midfield and looks for a first-time pass through the Inter defence towards Nikola Kalinic. But Gary Medel - playing at centre-half - storms across to cut out Badelj's pass.

Plenty to think about for David Moyes in the opening 20 minutes. His Real Sociedad side are posing little threat, and have found themselves pressed back for long spells.

The perfect start for Fiorentina is sealed with a goal. Josip Ilicic is forced to wait as the Inter players surround the referee to argue their case, but does not allow the delay to detract from his task. The Slovenian hammers in the spot-kick to leave Roberto Mancini looking furious on the touchline.

Almost show-time in a noisy San Siro. Fiorentina boss Paulo Sousa looks dapper his fitted suit and La Viola purple tie, while Inter counterpart Roberto Mancini opts for the funeral director black.

The match officials dish out a group handshake - they're pumped. We're under way.

It's as cagey as you'd expect in the first 10 minutes, with Real Sociedad's keeper Geronimo Rulli looking far from convincing. The young Argentinian has just followed-up an air kick with a basic handling error. He got away with it on both occasions, but might not be so lucky given a third error.

Some breaking news from the San Siro - and it is bad news for the home side. Stevan Jovetic, who has impressed since his summer arrival from Manchester City, is out after injuring his thigh in the warm-up. Perhaps he didn't fancy playing against the club where he made his name... Rodrigo Palacio starts in his place.

Sousa not scared of Inter

Fiorentina's work ethic and togetherness means they can match any of their more-fancied Serie A rivals - including tonight's opponents Inter Milan, says boss Paulo Sousa.

"Inter have a rich culture and history, and all of that helps when you're out fighting for results. This season they have a squad of players that should be fighting for the Scudetto," says the Portuguese boss. 

"Our strength lies in our unity and we always go out to win, no matter who the opponents. We believe we can compete with teams that, on paper, are stronger than us."

Final preparations

Been treated to a glimpse inside both dressing rooms as the players prepare to stroll out into the tunnel. Nikola Kalinic - a Croatian striker not fondly remembered for a miserable spell at Blackburn - pulls on his changed white Fiorentina shirt, while across the corridor Inter's Guy Medel struts about as scarily as you would expect a man nicknamed The Pitbull to do.

La Viola in tune

But standing in the way of Inter's perfect record is a Fiorentina side which has built a reputation for producing a more free-flowing, attacking brand of football.

Perhaps not surprising considering their manager is Paulo Sousa. Sousa, after all, is a man who describes himself on his own website as being someone who wants to "entertain and play attractive, passing football, with a high tempo, pressing the opposition back and forcing mistakes." So there. 

And so far it appears to be working for Sousa, who was appointed in the summer. La Viola have lost just once, sticking them three points behind Inter in second place.

Mancini demands Inter improvement

After winning their opening five matches one would think that Inter Milan coach Roberto Mancini would be quite content. Well he is - but, like all good managers, is demanding even more from his side.

"We're happy about the fact that we look solid. It means we've done a good job. I'm quite pleased for the moment," concedes the former Manchester City manager, whose team have let in just one goal.

"But we don't only need to score more goals; we have to improve defensively too, our possession play – everything.

"They've got off to a good start but that's because they have toiled and battled hard. We just need to make sure we keep it up."

Inter a new era

After a few years in the Italian wilderness, sleeping giants Inter Milan appear to have woken from their recent slumber.

The Nerazzurri, who have finished between fifth and ninth in each of the last four Serie A seasons, are hoping to recreate their mid-Noughties glory days under Roberto Mancini. Under Roberto Mancini of course. 

And Inter's Indonesian hierarchy have certainly backed their man. The arrivals of Monaco midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, Barcelona defender Martin Montoya and Manchester City forward Stevan Jovetic have enabled Inter to win their opening five games - the first time they have achieved that feat in 50 years.

Smart money on a draw?

The last three meetings between the sides have ended 1-1, so the smart money seems to be on the spoils being shared once again.

However, Real Sociedad have the edge, going unbeaten in the last six derby clashes with their Basque neighbours, a run stretching to March 2012. 

But if you're looking for a pointer towards a positive result, Athletic are yet to keep a clean sheet in the league this season. 

In contrast, La Real have posted three shut-outs so far, albeit against more modest opposition than faced by tonight's visitors.

Moyes eases pressure?

After a timely first victory of the season in midweek, David Moyes can further endear himself to Real Sociedad supporters by leading his side to victory over Athletic Bilbao. 

It's the first Basque derby of the season, a fixture which dates back to 1909, with Athletic braced for a hostile atmosphere at what will be a lively Anotea Stadium. 

The visitors have excelled in both the Supercopa de Espana and the Europa League this season. But in La Liga, it's four defeats in five matches after a tough opening run of games that has seen them face Barcelona, Real Madrid and Villarreal at El Madrigal. 

La Real failed to score in their first three games, but the 3-0 victory at Granada eased the mounting pressure on Moyes.

Ciao! Buenos dias! Hello! Wherever you are in the world, welcome to our latest jaunt over to mainland Europe. Tonight we are heading over to two well-known European destinations - a BOGOF offer if you like. And you don't even have to squash on a cramped low-budget flight to enjoy the action in San Sebastian and Milan.

First to land is the Basque derby between Moyes's Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao in Spain's La Liga (19:30 BST), just ahead of a Italian monster between leaders Inter Milan and second-placed Fiorentina at the San Siro (19:45 BST).

Who said Sunday nights were boring?

Sparked by a refusal to give the ball back. An Italian shove. An icy Scottish glare. Choice words from both men. And a bit of a tussle.

Roberto Mancini and David Moyes have barely been mentioned in the same breath since their infamous touchline bust-up in March 2010. Until this admittedly tenuous link.

Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending if you like to see a bit of needle in the football or not) there is no chance of the pair scuffling on the side today.

But these two are the central characters in our European coverage tonight. So it's worth a classic Premier League photo. I told you it was tenuous...
