Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe: "I think we should have got something from the game. We created some good chances in both halves, but especially in the first half we had that cutting edge and their keeper made some good saves. 

"Some of our passing and build-up play was very good - the only thing missing was the goals. We grew into the game, even in the second half when we didn't create chances, we played well. We don't want to get used to losing, but it was a positive day for us."

A first start at Etihad Stadium to remember for Manchester City's 19-year-old Nigerian Kelechi Iheancho, who scored one goal and made two more, rounding off his side's scoring with a fine cross for 17-year-old Spaniard Manu Garcia to make it 5-1.

City played with two up front tonight in a 4-4-2 formation against the Eagles. If there is only one place in their attack going on Saturday, when Norwich are the visitors, then Iheancho has just made a strong case that it should be him.

Barcelona held by minnows

Barcelona have been held to a shock 0-0 draw by Spanish third tier side Villanovense in the first leg of their last 32 Copa del Rey tie.

The Spanish cup, league and European champions - without Luis Suarez and Neymar - dominated possession but could not break down the minnows, who managed eight attempts on goal to Barca's 14.

Barcelona keeper Jordi Masip said: "The most important thing is that we didn't give up any goals."

Kelechi Iheancho's first Manchester City goal at Etihad Stadium - and it could be the first of many for the 19-year-old Nigerian.

It came from an over-hit Jesus Navas cross - there have been plenty of them too. Kevin de Bruyne collected it on the left and played it back into the danger zone, where Wilfried Bony jumped over the ball and Iheancho supplied the cool finish.

Passing, movement, and now the finish as well. If you had to pick the City striker tonight who looks like he cost £28m, it would be the teenager.

He obviously likes playing Palace - he scored City's dramatic late winner in the league at Selhurst Park in September.

Contender for miss of the season by Wilfried Bony after more great work by Kelechi Iheancho and Fernando to tee him up.

The Nigerian's precise ball released the Brazilian, and he unselfishly squared for the Ivorian, but Bony skied his first-time shot high over the bar from about 10 yards out, before staring accusingly at the ground, Sunday League style, as if to blame a bobble.

He was unmarked too, and had time to take a touch, so that is no excuse.

Unlike in Sunday's Manchester derby, City's attacking is definitely better than their defending in this game - and goalkeeper Willy Caballero did not exactly inspire confidence either with the way he pushed a low cross into Joe Ledley's path just after his side had gone 2-0 up.

Palace have looked to threaten on the break and have not done a bad job of it, but they have only forced Caballero into one proper save and the visitors will have to be far more clinical after the break to get into this tie.

Borussia Dortmund, second in the Bundesliga, thumped second division Paderborn 7-1 to reach the third round of the German Cup.

Paderborn, managed by former Germany international Stefen Effenberg, took the lead when Srdjan Lakic capitalised on a mistake by keeper Roman Burki.

But Dortmund recovered and two goals from Gonzalo Castro helped them on their way to a comfortable win.

History lesson for Klopp

Liverpool mitts have been plastered over the unusual three-handled League Cup more times than any other club. 

The Reds have lifted the trophy on eight occasions, while the Cherries only reached the quarter-finals for the first time last season. Who beat them? Liverpool. But the Reds were beaten in the semi-finals by eventual winners Chelsea.

"I have heard about our history in this competition of course - it means everything," says Reds boss Jurgen Klopp. "So I know what we have to do. We have to play the game, give our all and try to win this game."

Survival mode

Bournemouth are making no bones about it - Premier League survival is all that matters to them.

The Cherries have made full use of their squad in the League Cup this season, fielding an entirely different starting XI in their opening tie against Hartlepool and making nine changes for the shootout win at Preston.

But they do not have that luxury tonight with several players out with long-term injuries.

“If we can go to Anfield and put in a good performance then of course it will give us huge confidence," says Cherries assistant manager Jason Tindall.

"It could be the catalyst to getting us back performing well and winning in the Premier League.”

Cherries must defend better - Howe

Bournemouth have conceded 10 (ten!) goals in their past two Premier League matches, but manager Eddie Howe reckons those defensive horror shows will not be playing on his team's mind.

"They are isolated games and they have gone as far as we're concerned," he tells Sky Sports. "We have changed the team around, mostly enforced due to injuries and players being cup-tied.

"Harry Arter's return is a huge boost for everybody, he was a huge player for us last season - the heartbeat of our side. It gives everyone a lift.

"We want to make a fast start, be aggressive with the ball, but we do have to defend better than we have in the last few games."

We've heard of having a bad day in the office - but National League club Woking have really had one - and have made their entire playing squad available for loan moves.

Manager Garry Hill informed his players of the decision following Saturday's FA Cup fourth qualifying-round 3-0 defeat by Maidenhead United.

"Garry addressed all of the players and told them exactly where they stand," chairman Mike Smith told BBC Surrey.

"Saturday's performance fell far, far below what Garry deserves and what the football club deserves."

Their Gabon forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - on the bench today - has told BBC World Service that when he leaves Germany his next stop will be La Liga, not the Premier League.

He is currently the joint top scorer in the Bundesliga with 13 goals.

"I think maybe one day yes I'll leave to play in another league because my dream is to play in Spain," said the 26-year-old.

"But for the moment I'm 100% concentrated on Dortmund. That's how I've always operated. During a season I don't think about things like that. It's my dad who receives phone calls from other clubs and all that stuff."

Some Premier League players might turn their nose up at the prospect of having to play a midweek League Cup match. Not Harry Arter. The Bournemouth midfielder is pulling on his boots for the first time this season after recovering from a hip injury.

"It's a game that I've looked at as one I can come back into and get some minutes in - I'm really excited," says the 25-year-old Republic of Ireland international.

"It was tough over the summer but I'm glad it has been sorted and now I'm looking forward to playing.

"We will try to attack the game and win - you can only go through if you win the game. We will be trying to carry on the philosophy we have."

What a week for football and traffic in Manchester. Just a few days after the Manchester derby, tonight sees City and United both playing at home for the first time in six years.

Gridlock?

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew says he is looking forward to the forthcoming Manchester-club double header. The Eagles follow up Wednesday's cup encounter at the league leaders with United at home on Saturday.

"They’re good games for us. Man City and Man United," he said.

 "We look forward to those and hopefully we can get ourselves a win."
