Subdued atmosphere now inside Old Trafford. Even the 'five Cantonas' song has stopped being sung by the Stretford End.

How long before the "attack, attack, attack" chants start?

Midfielder Marouane Fellaini stretches to get the ball after letting it run loose and leaves one in on the leg of West Ham defender James Tomkins.

Referee Mark Clattenburg sees nothing wrong with it, but it could have been a card of a bloody colour if the official had seen it from a different angle.

Fellaini got sent off for a similar tackle in the last game of last season against Hull.

Megs! Midfielder Juan Mata with some silky skills to play the ball through the legs of West Ham midfielder Alex Song.

Song making his first start of the season. A nice welcome back for him.

It came to nothing though. The visitors have had the better chances in this match. Will they come to rue the misses opportunities?

United holding on by the skin of their teeth, they really should be behind at home this afternoon.

This time centre-back Winston Reid rattles the post with a towering header from a corner.

"Leicester don’t have to have possession of the ball, it’s what they do when they don’t have it. Everyone is talking about Jurgen Klopp and the way Liverpool play under him, but Claudio Ranieri has been equally impressive."

    What a block Winston Reid!!

Winger Jesse Lingard is causing all sorts of problems on the left and he puts in a ball to Marouane Fellaini, who shows great composure to knock the ball back to Anthony Martial.

The striker is around eight yards out, swivels and angles a goalbound shot, but New Zealander Reid puts his body on the line to stop the opening goal.

No Rooney is a big boost to the speed of United's play. To then add Fellaini is disappointing.

Striker Anthony Martial's first sniff for Manchester United as midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin does well to win the ball back before playing his team-mate in.

The Frenchman is shackled well by West Ham defender Winston Reid though, and is forced away from goal and the danger is averted.

    West Ham should be ahead!

Centre-back Daley Blind is a relieved man after giving the ball away in the middle of the park. The Hammers break clear and winger Victor Moses is through on goal, one-on-one with David de Gea, but the Spanish stopper wins the battle of wits, standing tall to thwart the West Ham man.

De Gea to United's rescue? Not the first time we've read that this season.

Big Marouane Fellani involved again. Playing in behind striker Anthony Martial, the Belgian is getting forward. This time he gets his head onto a lovely Paddy McNair cross but can't find the target.

Encouraging for the home fans. West Ham haven't troubled United goalkeeper David de Gea yet.

"Louis van Gaal wants to win his first trophy. This pragmatic approach today is what is needed, but they need to be careful because there is no Wayne Rooney. Is it a better team without Rooney? If they do well today he may stick with this team."

Oh hello! The bushy-haired lanky midfielder Marouane Fellaini collects the ball inside the West Ham half before galloping on a giraffe-like run upfield.

He skips past a Hammers man, gets to the edge of the area but his finish can't match his run and dribbles wide of goal.

  17. 'No Rooney might make difference'published at 15:03 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2015

    Man Utd 0-0 West Ham

How will Manchester United fare without Wayne Rooney today? Former Scotland winger Pat Nevin thinks a pacier alternative up front could suit the Red Devils.

"I would rather not see Rooney as a centre forward," he told 5 live Sport on Friday. "He has nowhere near the pace that he once had or the pace you need to get beyond teams.

"So what happens is you keep the ball, play it slower and it becomes really static. If you put someone quick up there it lengthens the game.

"Manchester United don't have anyone going behind an opposition defence other than Martial. So take Wayne Rooney out and put someone quick up there, you might see a difference. When Rooney's back, I'd play him but not necessarily up front."

Manchester United already showing some pace in the final third as winger Jesse Lingard, playing from the left, makes a burst into the box but West Ham centre-back James Tomkins stretches out a long leg to halt the attack.

Shortly after, full-back Paddy McNair blasts an effort over the crossbar.

    Bright start from the hosts.
