The Watford defence look like they just met each other tonight. Sebastian Prodl plays a wayward backpass, but fortunately for him Steven Davis fails to punish him.

Moments earlier, Heurelho Gomes' poor throw arrives at the feet of Sadio Mane - but the keeper makes amends by clawing the ball back from the attacker.

Huge credit to Southampton's midfield. They've barely let Watford penetrate the halfway line, hence the defence have had little to do. 

Jose Fonte hooks one over the bar from 12 yards after a decent pull-back by Cedric Soares.

The Saints should have scored a second by now.

It's one of those 'he did everything but score' moments. 

Watford's Jurado plays a horrid backpass to Sebastian Prodl, whose has the ball nicked off him by the alert Sadio Mane.

But with only Heurelho Gomes to beat Mane slides his shot an inch past the right-hand post.

Southampton's Shane Long in again.... but the flag's up. The Republic of Ireland striker was played in on the right by Oriol Romeu, but he was a fraction off.

Super block by Saints' Ryan Bertrand. The England full-back denies the twisting, weaving striker Odion Ighalo whose shot in charged down by the defender.

Goalscorer Shane Long almost grabs his second. This time the Irish striker's shot tight on the angle is pushed away by Heurelho Gomes.

Moments later, Cedric Soares is shown yellow for a foul on Jose Holebas.

The blankets are out for both managers. It's raining/sleeting and it's cold.

Saints under pressure. Full-back Allan Nyom is getting a lot of room down the left, but again his cross fails to find a Watford attacker.

Straight back at the other end Sadio Mane drifts into the Watford area before firing a shot that Heurelho Gomes has to push out for a corner.

Nothing comes from the resulting set-piece.

... but full-back Allan Nyom, who has been impressive this season, fails to find either Odion Ighalo or Troy Deeney with his delivery from the right.

Southampton's Shane Long feeds Sadio Mane. The pass is too strong but the pacy Mane almost gets in ahead of keeper Heurelho Gomes.

Those two look a threat - that's Long and Mane, I mean.

Sadio Mane, who did not play in the defeat by Norwich because he was punished for being late, is back in the Saints starting line-up. He looks quite lively on the left. The attacker tried to find Oriol Romeu with a cutback... but didn't.

Moments later, Romeu does get hold of the ball but finds the New Forest with his effort.

It's been a quiet start. Watford's seven-in-seven man Odion Ighalo has just been caught offside. Can the Saints defence keep him quiet tonight? He does keep going until stoppage time. Engine.
