Leicester boss Claudio Ranieri tried to sign his opposite number Mauricio Pochettino for Atletico Madrid from Espanyol at the turn of the millennium.
"I always liked him as a player," said Ranieri. "I was very, very close but there was a little problem with our money at Atletico Madrid, so it wasn't possible. He was a player I always admired, a very good player."
Pochettino said: "We spoke a little bit about that on the touchline on Sunday for two or three minutes before the start of the game.
"He said I was lucky because it was the year Atletico went down. The deal was done and I had agreed to go but there wasn't the money - it was impossible to pay because there was a takeover at the club. It was lucky."
Alli commits to Spurs
This is Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli's first game since signing a new contract to keep him at the club until 2021.
The 19-year-old, who joined Spurs last February from MK Dons, has impressed in his first full season and has scored six goals in 30 appearances so far.
