    Charlie Adam
Stoke City midfielder on BBC Radio 5 live's weekend preview show

"I know Jonjo Shelvey personally. I think Newcastle is a great move for him. They have passionate fans. He'll become a local hero there. He'll drive that team like it's his own. He can add goals to his game.

"After they sold Yohan Cabaye I wouldn't say they had a goalscoring midfielder but he has that - he can score free-kicks and long-distance goals. He's different to what they've got."

Newcastle v West Ham (15:00 GMT)

Jonjo Shelvey joined Newcastle for £12m from relegation rivals Swansea City and it's fair to say things had gone sour for Shelvey with the Swans.

"I won't go into it but I felt a little bit hard done by to be fair down there," said Shelvey.

"I thought I was hung out to dry for a little bit when I was training well, I was competing well in the week and was finding myself really unlucky not to play."

    Newcastle 2-0 West Ham

A cracking half for the home side. It hasn't seemed it but the stats says it has been close in terms of possession, close in terms of territory and each side has had six shots.

The key - Newcastle have hit the target four times and two have flown in.

Jonjo Shelvey blocks the run of Hammers forward Enner Valencia with a hefty shoulder charge. The visiting player isn't too happy as referee Neil Swarbrick has a word in both of their shell-likes as well as those of their captains to calm things down.

    Newcastle 2-0 West Ham

Another chance for Newcastle. Moussa Sissoko has a 12-yard shot blocked and might have been better striking the ball with a first-time effort. The home side could have been well out of sight with a bit more clinical finishing. Talk about one-sided.

Paul Dummett got the equaliser for Newcastle in their 3-3 draw with Manchester United in midweek and he goes close with a goalbound left-footed shot that is blocked by the head of James Collins. There's a bit of pinball in the West Ham area before the Hammers get a goal-kick.

Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer is in attendance at St James' Park today and he's joined by none other than pop maestro Ed Sheeran. Unlikely combo but they're all smiles at the moment.

Jonjo Shelvey is having a top debut so far. He plays a raking 60-70-yard angled ball forward into the run of Daryl Janmaat down Newcastle's right and he crosses for Georginio Wijnaldum to sidefoot into the roof of the net from six yards. Lovely goal.
